Any Gays in the Building?

Remember when Mabel was gay for a season? Ah, good times. Anyway, I can’t be too salty about a series that gave us Meryl Streep and Martin Short’s on-screen and real-life romances because, I can’t help it, I still love love. But, anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, “Only Murders in the Building” is back for its fifth season of murder and podcasting. And this time Renée Zellweger will be joining the cast. Bridget Jones and Miranda Priestly in the same television universe? I’ll take it. Also, there will be at least one real gay. I see you, Beanie Feldstein.

Any Lesbians In the Building?

Lights, camera, murder! Everyone’s favorite multi-generational true crime murder podcasters are back, and investigating the gayest murder so far. OK, fine, perhaps killing off (or at least so it seems…though the knee joints are hard to fake…RIP, Sazz) the show’s most consistently queer character might not be my favorite way to start a new season. Though I do enjoy the extra hallucinatory Jane Lynch we’re getting to see this season instead. Plus, great homicidal queer representation with the bonus [Spoiler Alert if you haven’t watched the first two episodes yet…] Jan sighting. Anyway, I think what I’m trying to say is for a show set in New York City it needs more consistently queer characters. No, Mabel Season 2 does not count unless we see some of the same in Mabel Season 4 (we all know there was none Mabel Season 3). Harumpf. I will, however, accept more scenes where Meryl Streep chews the scenery as an apology – for now. In conclusion, more gays please – and not just as murder victims.

Only L.A. in the Building

This show is honestly so fun and enjoyable to watch because of the insane chemistry and impeccable comedic timing between Steve, Martin and Selena. I won’t even get too salty (just enough salty) about them all but dropping Mabel’s bisexually last season. But they did give us Meryl Streep instead. So, you know, I will begrudgingly accept it. Though (and spoilers for the end of last season) I guess we won’t be seeing more of Jane Lynch. Or, maybe just in flashbacks. Well, one day we’ll have an Only Lesbians in the Building of our own again. Maybe.

Music Monday: Single Edition

Funny, I never worry about boyfriends at all either. Anyway, this song felt relevant given later this week will mark a year and all. Also, I’ve finally gotten caught up on “Only Murders in the Building” and am excited for this tomorrow’s finale. Though, make Mabel gay again, please. (And no the brief reminder there does not need to be a groom was not enough.) Or at least let her flirt with Ashley Park or something. Sheesh. Happy Monday, kittens.

Only Meryl in the Building

Hey, guess what, I’m going on vacation. I mean I’m still here, today. But tomorrow, vacation. (Don’t worry, I’ll leave you Vixens per usual.) But before I go, how about a little MURDER, but in another building. “Only Murders in the Building” is back for a third season. This time around it seems without a girlfriend for Mabel but with the addition of Meryl Streep. So, you know, you win some, you lose some. The series has been a frothy delight through its first two seasons, maximizing the unlikely chemistry between its star trio of Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short. While I doubt that obvious “Father of the Bride” homage they preview will lead to any lesbian weddings, I at least hope they don’t drop all mention of Mabel’s sexual fluidity, because that would be lamer than her girl talk.

My Weekend (Casting) Crush

More like “Only Meryls in the Building,” amirite? So the delightful little murder show with the most unlikely of cross-generational appeal just got even more appealing by adding none other than Meryl Streep herself. The 21-time Oscar nominee is joining Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez and the cast of the most amusing New York murder-mystery series for its third season. I don’t know who she’ll be playing. (Maybe one of Bunny’s long-lost family members? A maid?) But I just know when Meryl straps on the silly we’re all in for a treat. And, last season, this show also gave us queer ladies something to smile about thanks to the addition of real-life Shane/Cara Delevingne and Selena’s character being much more fluid on the Kinsey Scale than previously revealed. So, bring on the Meryl (and Paul Rudd, he’s perfectly lovely too I suppose). Like, this show also has Tina Fey, too. Is there such thing as too much of a good thing? Never! Cate Blanchett for Season 4! Happy weekend, all.

Music Monday: Working Girl Edition

If you remember the late 80s through a fog of aerosol hairspray and big shoulder pads like I do, you no doubt have a warm spot for Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run.” I associate it, intrinsically, with the 1988 rom-com hit “Working Girl.” Melanie Griffith. Sigourney Weaver. Joan Cusack. An endless supply of AquaNet. Like, come on. That’s beyond 80s iconic. That’s the 80s in a time capsule. And this song was so triumphant, it still lifts my spirits each time I hear it. Honestly, I have to resist the urge to stand up and cheer.

So it’s with fondness and hope that I received news of a “Working Girl” reboot produced by and starring Selena Gomez (who I absolutely adore in “Only Murders in the Building”). The original film was so specifically 80s it will be interesting to see how they reinterpret it for the 2020s. We can only hope they find a similarly rejuvenating anthem to buoy our spirits. Happy Monday, kittens.

Building Lesbians

Wow, that got gay right quick. If you are a fan of the how-does-this-work, it-shouldn’t-work-show “Only Murders In the Building,” you know continues to defy the odds and work well in just started second season. The Steve Martin-Martin Short-Selena Gomez murder-comedy remains one of the most charming, hilarious and at times touching shows on air. And now, with ladies kissing. Sorry, spoiler alert, there’s some kissing between Selena and new cast member/real-life Shane Cara Delevingne. It happens in the second episode. There, now you know.

I’m pretty sure that’s the reason the show’s been quickly picked up for its third season. Kidding, mostly. Cara’s casting was announced bringing speculation that her art gallery owner character Alice and Selena’s artist character Mabel would perhaps hook up. And, then it was confirmed they would indeed be an item? well, they did not make us wait. Now, I fear Alice’s sudden arrival in Mabel’s life may be tied to some grisly death/murder. Because, uh, that’s kind of the nature of this show.

I really like basically everything about this show. The chemistry between its unlikely trio of stars. The brief jaunts into magical realism. The underrated physical comedy. The theme music. The perfect nailing of crime podcast culture. And now, The Gay.

I don’t know where they plan to take Mabel and Alice’s relationship, but I certainly hope we see a lot of it.

Only Lesbians in the Building

Did I manifest lesbianism into “Only Murders in the Building?” Remember earlier this year when it was reported that the celesbian world’s real-life Shane, Cara Delevingne, was joining the second season of the murder-mystery show? And remember when I said sais they’d better make her character, described as “Alice, a sophisticated art world insider who becomes enmeshed in the mystery,” gay?

Well, turned out they did. She is. And, she is going to be the new love interest to series star Selena Gomez’s character Mabel. So, um, do I get another toaster oven? Because I believe I wished this into existence. You are welcome. I accept Venmo. (Kidding! I mean I do, but kidding.)

I really enjoyed this series for its entirely unexpected chemistry between septuagenarian comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short with Gomez. The dad joke energy meets disaffected millennial vibe is strong with this one, but somehow it works.

The series showrunner John Hoffman revealed the new relationship in an interview with Vanity Fair. Apparently Selena and Cara have been friends for years, and that resulted in a “quick, sexy intimacy to their onscreen rapport.”

“It was amazing to have the two of them know each other and feel comfortable. It’s a little sparky in all the right ways that makes you feel like, Oh, someone’s opening someone’s world.”

So, Alice opens up Mabel to – uh – the art world. Got it.

No matter where their storyline goes, I’m pleased to add “Only Murders in the Building” to the should-be-longer list of shows that make followed my sage advice to, “MAKE IT GAY.” I will expect a small commission.

p.s. So the Season 2 teaster trailer does not give us much Mabel/Alive gay goodness. But it does give us Shirley MacLaine (and Amy Schumer), so it is kinda forgiven. For now.

Get Cara-ed Away

I don’t know what to think of Cara Delevingne, really, other than she’s basically the real-life celebrity Shane – but with better hair and more eyebrows. But I am intrigued that she will be joining the Season 2 cast of “Only Murders in the Building,” the Hulu series starring the unexpectedly excellent trio of Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short. It’s like who knew that if you put the world’s ultimate dad jokesters and a cool disaffected millennial together in an urbane setting with a dash of murder that they would have such great chemistry and produce such a smart, silly and even at times surprisingly sentimental show? Anyway, Cara’s new character, who will be a series regular, is described as “Alice, a sophisticated art world insider who becomes enmeshed in the mystery.” So all I’m hearing is that there is a good chance Alice will associate with Gomez’s Mabel, and there’s also a good chance Alice will be gay. So, that here is one more thing to be hopeful for in 2022. Now, bring on Season 2.
