A Simple (Gay) Favor

Right, so if we’re doing this again, they’re gonna make it gay this time – right? Like really, actually gay – right? Sure, they had that lil sympathy smooch in the first one. But for the sequel, they run off together and live happily ever after – in an extremely gay way. RIGHT?

Yes, I will probably watch “Another Simple Favor” – whether it’s actually gay or not – because Blake Lively in menswear just does it for me. Granted, I don’t know why Anna Kendrick’s character would jet off to Italy to be the maid-of-honor for someone who literally tried to kill her – other than she loves her in a totally gay way. But if they don’t make it gay, I certainly hope they throw us a ton more hot looks (or should I saw lewks) to satiate our needs. But, seriously, make it gay.

p.s. See, remember? GAY.

A Simple Sequel

When I heard “A Simple Favor” was getting a sequel I thought two things immediately. 1) How? and 2) Suits! Glorious, divine, immaculate suits. If you’ve seen the original – which you should because it was a fun little twisty-turny thrilled with, and this cannot be emphasized enough, EXCELLENT SUITS (see above clip) – you know it ended in a certain fairly definitive way. But I guess any friendship can be mended, even the kind that ends up sending you to prison for 20 years.

I have no idea what will happen in the sequel and how Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick’s characters manage to rekindle their, uh, whatever in the sequel. But for those curious some photos of filming hint at Blake’s Emily getting married. No, sadly, not to Anna’s Stephanie…probably. I mean they’re both holding bouquets so we can always dream. Now, we need some behind-the-scenes shots of the one or both of them in suits drinking martinis. Otherwise, what even is the point of a sequel. (They can kiss again too, please, because the suits and the kissing clearly go together…)

Gender Fuck Thursday: Another Favor

And, back to the ladies. That is more like it. If you’re like me, you watched “A Simple Favor” for the plot, I mean suits, I mean plot, I mean Blake Lively in a stunning array of suits. Also, if you’re like me, you are surprised they’re developing a sequel to the 2018 thriller for, uh, obvious reasons if you watched until the end. But, here we go with Blake and Anna Kendrick returning to their roles and, hopefully, their outfits. What? The suits are very, very good. Oh, and did I mention they kissed? Yeah, much more kissing in the sequel. Please and thank you.

Gender Fuck Thursday: A Simple Favor Edition

Look, I do not know why Blake Lively wears what appears to be a series of impeccably tailored tuxedoes, waistcoats and suits in the trailer for “A Simple Favor.” But I also know not to look a gift suit in the mouth.

From its trailer, this movie is like “Gone Girl” meets “Single White Female,” but with suits! Obviously if I was Anna Kendrick, I would grant whatever simple favor Blake wanted – but only if she was wearing one of those suits. Hey, favors aren’t free.

This is also the film that inspired this brilliant “Therese and Carol but modern” tweet.

And, well, you can see why.

Pass the Soap

Oh, I heard you wanted some Anna Kendrick. Ask and ye shall receive. With “Pitch Perfect 2” opening this weekend, I couldn’t think of a better way to start the week than with some “deep” Shower Thoughts from our favorite leaders of the Barden Bellas. Yeah, just let those gems sink in. Mind blown? Not exactly. But if it was truly blown you wouldn’t be able to enjoy Anna anyway. So there.

p.s. Oh, you wanted Anna in a suit? Boom. Now how’s that mind doing?

Lady Trailers

For all the lost puppies and dead children and toenail fungus, the Super Ad Bowl was somewhat less sexist and exploitive than in years past. Somewhat. But what I was most pleased by was the number of movie trailers featuring prominent female leads. Sure, dinosaurs and Andy Dwyer stole the show. But ladies made their presence felt and I couldn’t be happier. Sure, they were the leads or co-leads) in only four of the thirteen movie trailers that aired (well, five if you count “50 Shades of Grey”). But the movies were flat-out the ones I was most excited about anyway. Here is a rundown of the best Super Bowl trailers for ladies listed from those I am excited to very, very excited about.

Terminator: Genisys

I don’t understand why a robot would age as much as Arnold Schwarzenegger has aged. Like, seriously, wouldn’t he just rust instead of turn grey and wrinkly? But I all kinds of pumped to see Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons as Sarah Connor.

Tomorrowland

I have no idea what this movie is about. I think The Future? Or The Past? Possibly The Alternate Reality? But I do like that its chief protagonist appears to be a young girl who gets taken on a magical (otherworldly? both?) adventure to “Tomorrowland.”

Insurgent

Any movie where a woman gets to run full speed at Kate Winslet and tackle her like a linebacker is a movie I will gladly pay to see, even if all the shit blowing up all around her makes absolutely no sense.

Pitch Perfect 2

PLEASE LIKE I NEED A REASON TO BE EXCITED ABOUT THIS.

Considering that for the last two years a movie with a female lead has lead the box office (both part of “The Hunger Games” franchise, but still), it makes sense to let the ladies have a movie moment during the big game. So, which trailers got you jazzed. I know, I know, the one with the dinosaurs. But which other ones?

A-Pop

Oh, Anna Kendrick, is there nothing you can’t do? Hold your own with George Clooney. Rise above sparkly vampires. Turn the beat around with your red cups. Charm us with your Tweets. And now master K-pop. Look, I’ll confess to knowing very little about K-pop, except the small energetic snippets I’ve seen and heard. The video features real-life K-pop girl group f(x), which features a mix of South Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese and Asian-American members. What I particularly like about it is these young women and their “foreigness” aren’t the butt of the jokes. It’s Anna’s unfamiliarity and clumsiness that are being laughed at instead. Score one for non-stereotypical Asian representation. Also, who doesn’t love a good diarrhea joke?

p.s. Does short-haired, deep-voiced f(x) member Amber ping anyone else? Just checking.

My Weekend Crush

The celebrity who is good at Twitter is a rare bird indeed. Most range somewhere between pleasantly mundane to excruciatingly aggrandizing. And other times you have to unfollow immediately because, sweet merciful Zeus, the spelling. The grammar. No, uh-uh, no way. But there are the precious few who actually raise their public stock 140 characters at a time. And among those is the somewhat surprisingly delightful Anna Kendrick. Now I say somewhat surprisingly because, quite honestly, I’ve not given Anna Kendrick much thought in the past. Not that there’s anything wrong or repugnant about her. She’s just another very pretty slip of a girl and happens to be in those terrible “Twilight” movies. But after seeing her in the very fun “Pitch Perfect” and then started to see some of her very funny, very pointed tweets retweeted endlessly on Tumblr. Which is when I realized, fucking hell this girl is fucking funny. Like will you be my BFF funny. Fuck, yeah.

Not only is she funny, and a capable actress, but she totally gets the weirdo internet and its rabid fandoms. Plus she knows the important of feeding and caring for one’s fandoms, hence this picture. Along with Brittany Snow and Anna Camp, they are definitely the captains of their ship. The one thing you can’t buy in Hollywood – even with the best publicist – is a genuinely and effortlessly delightful personality. Your Jennifer Lawrences of the world can attest. So when you find another one, you just want to share your amazing discovery with everyone else. You’re welcome. Happy weekend, all.

Squeaky clean

I know I’m the gal who sees subtext in, you know, everything. But I swear one of the most subtexty scenes from last year wasn’t in “Rizzoli & Isles” or “Once Upon a Time,” but a little movie about an all-girls a cappella singing group. I know, nothing gay about that. Oh, wait, I meant the opposite. And as far as subtexty scenes go, they don’t get much more suggestive than two gals, naked, wet and in the shower singing in perfect unison. I mean, she left a naked guy to go find a naked girl. In fact, it was so gay I was shocked when Brittany Snow and Anna Kendrick didn’t make out afteward. Which reminds me, I need to pick up this DVD like yesterday. Fire away, fire away subtext.

Edit: Yes, I know of course there's an actual lesbian character in the movie. But this is post ain't about that. It's about subtext. Sigh.

Fast pitch

I blame “Glee.” For a multitude of sins, really. But specifically, I blame “Glee” for the burning desire with which I want to see “Pitch Perfect.” Yes, the movie that sounds a lot like “Glee: The College Years.” But, dammit, if I don’t plan to slink off and see it the second it comes out. Part of this is because I can’t resist the intoxicating combination of young people’s aspirations and jazz hands. Let’s all be honest and acknowledge that the singing and dancing is what makes us love “Glee” even when we shouldn’t (though last week was an improvement, I thought). And this is singing and dancing without a curfew or with Rebel Wilson. Certainly, a few things seem rather derivative. Did the new girl really get discovered singing in the shower? Did Fat Amy really get pseudo-slushied? Also, I’m having a hard time telling Bland Leading Boy No. 1 from Bland Leading Boy No. 2. But the story is written by longtime “30 Rock” scribe Kay Cannon, so it has to be more than just Ryan Murphy Lite. Also, and I cannot repeat this enough, Rebel Wilson. Anyone who can make me snort laugh twice in a trailer deserves at the very least the price of admission.
