My Weekend (Vengeance) Crush

Aw, man. Look at these two. I almost forgot what it was like to be invested in a long-term, healthy queer couple on screen. Anyway, happy Return to Purgatory Day for all who celebrate. Go figure out how to access Tubi and let’s go kick some demon ass. This “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance” special isn’t going to watch itself. Like, WayHaught hugs await! Happy weekend, all.

Home, Sweet Purgatory

And that’s why we call them WayHaught. Dominique Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell made quite the handsome couple at Comic-Con, as expected, and I can’t wait to see the domestic not-so-tranquility Waverly and Nicole are getting up to in good old Purgatory. The full trailer for Tubi’s new 90-minute special “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance” was released at the con last weekend. And it looks like another gun-slinging good time, with some smoochies thrown in between the face punches. You know, typical Earp heir shit.

Dom and their short hair will debut in the reboot (emphasis on boots), but in interviews they’ve said Waverly is not changing pronouns. But don't worry, you heard me mention the smoochies already, right? Yeah, bring it on, Earps. We got some demon asses to kick and wives to kiss.

Who Ya Gonna Call

Gosh, it’s been a while since I squealed in any kind of delight. But here we are. Welcome back to Purgatory, Earpers. Wynonna Earp returns with a vengeance. The gang’s getting back together, and they’re bringing everything good (and bad – otherwise there wouldn't be a show) back with them. Knee-high boots! Ten-gallon hats! Dom’s short hair! I know this is just the briefest of teases (expect more this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con), but it has me genuinely excited for the rest of this year. Can’t say I’ve felt that feeling in a while either. So, you know, let’s celebrate strong women kicking ass in every arena, from entertainment to politics. Because when it’s time to fight the demons, you know who to call. (Women, in case you were wondering, you call women.)

My Wynonna Crush

*unintelligible gurgling noises*

If perchance you didn’t hear all the joyous lesbian squealing yesterday afternoon, you might have missed the news. But just like you can’t keep a good bad Revenant down, you can’t keep a beloved Wynonna Earp canceled. Yep, our favorite heir to a generational curse is returning for a 90-minute special on Tubi. Yes, I hear the delayed squealing now.

Series Creator/Executive Producer/Mother of Unicorns Emily Andras announced the news in a Vanity Fair exclusive yesterday, and before you ask yes all of your favs will be back. Melanie Scrofano/Wynonna, Dom Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell/WayHaught and Tim Rozon/Doc are returning for to face off with a “revenge-driven female villain” in “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.” We get WayHaught AND a female villain? Be still my heart.

The action will pick up “some time after” we last saw them embark on their own happily ever afters. Per Emily:

“Doc and Wynonna have been on an adventure, and Waverly and Nicole have been at home in [the Earp hometown of] Purgatory, doing their thing. I think it’s going to be really interesting to see, hopefully, what gets everybody home—maybe facing a challenge they’ve never faced before, something pretty intense. It’s all your favorite—hopefully—character moments, but also a little bit about growing up and sort of, like, being who you are now and earning all your choices.”

They will apparently start filming “soon,” and the special will premiere later this year. THIS YEAR, Earpers. THIS YEAR! Well, at least one good thing will come out of 2024 then. So there’s that.

Now, I know, we’re all frantically trying to figure out if we get Tubi - which we should because it’s a free ad-supported streamer. I can’t wait to strap back in with this wild crew. Earpers remain undefeated as the hardest fighting fans in fandom. Happy weekend, all.

How To Happy Ending

Yeah, I know, bit of broken record at this point but I’m still pissed about that “Killing Eve” finale. Mostly because it took four seasons of bold, complicated storytelling and reduced it to some sort of extended rebirth metaphor. Of course, that’s what I’ve been watching my favorite queer women assassins spy drama for all these years — a morality play.

While I understand that creators do not have a responsibility past telling good stories, and should certainly not be beholden to the whims of fandom, But just because they can do something, doesn’t always mean they should. And for a show with such a dedicated/obsessive (and I say that with love) fanbase of queer women, greater care should have certainly been taken in handling such an iconic queer character’s ending. Honestly, this show could have become legend had it allowed even the faintest sliver of a happy ending for Eve and Villanelle. Instead, this TV series written exclusively about PEOPLE WHO KILL PEOPLE FOR A LIVING decided to moralize at the bitter end. OK, sure, Jan.

But enough screaming into the void between clueless showrunner ears. How about we celebrate some happy endings instead? If you feel a distinct pang of deja vu, that’s because we did this once before back in 2016 when the Bury Your Gays trope last reared its ugly head in such spectacular fashion courtesy the Clexa debacle. Luckily, we’ve added a few more since then. But just a few.

So, here are a few of my personal favorite happily ever afters for queer women in movies and TV. Obviously there are more (and courtesy The Wayback Machine you can still see them on That Other Website whose name we no longer mention). Here are my Top 10 11 film and Top 5 6 TV happy endings for queer women (what, we’re gays, we always need to be a little extra). Apologies in advance as I have most certainly left off your favs. So, please, tell us your most beloved queer women riding off into that perpetual sunrise together moments. Share more joy, not less, kittens.

MOVIES

1. Desert Hearts (1985)

Kissing through the car window weakened our collective knees, getting on the train took them out.

2. The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love (1995)

To this day, I still want to buy myself a white Range Rover and ride off into the sunset together precisely because of this movie.

3. When Night Is Falling (1995)

You probably didn’t see this indie gem about a Christian college professor and a circus performer. But you should because they even resurrect the dog at the end.

4. Bound (1996)

You can’t beat an ending where the girl gets the girl and the truck.

5. But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

Happy endings plus pom-poms. Like, straight teen rom-coms could never.

6. Saving Face (2004)

Not enough people have seen this movie and more people should see this movie.

7. Imagine Me & You (2005)

This movie set unrealistic expectations for all future lesbian movie endings.

8. Nina’s Heavenly Delights (2006)

I mean it’s got about a cooking competition and lesbians, I’ll ignore the “Ghost Dad” overtones for that.

9. Carol (2015)

Let’s go to the Oak Room and make eyes at each other forever.

10. Summerland (2020)

The only recent lesbian period piece where the lesbians stare off into the ocean and still get to live happily ever after together.

11. Kajillionaire (2020)

Honestly, I had to include one more because this is such a strange and wonderful film AND it gives us one of the most unexpected and swoony happy queer endings in recent memory.

TELEVISION

1.South of Nowhere (2008): Spencer & Ashley

Oh, Spashley. You always remember your first (queer teen TV show happy ending).

2. Glee (2015): Brittany & Santana

Look, “Glee” did a lot of stupid things. But letting Brittana be endgame was not one of them.

3. Lost Girl (2015): Bo & Lauren

Sacrificing Tamsin was obviously not great. But this show about one woman’s insatiable sexual prowess gave us our Doccubus ending after all.

4. San Junipero (2016)

This “Black Mirror” episode is perhaps the most perfect example of how to subvert the Bury Your Gays trope. I mean, they literally bury their gays, but then still let them live on in endless happiness anyway.

5. Ratched (2020): Mildred & Gwendolyn

This is honestly not a very good show, like at all. But, if you ignore the gore and horror and crippling character inconsistencies, it was rather stylish to look at and is one of the only mainstream female queer romances I can think of where both the leads are played by out queer women as well. Plus they literally escape to sunny, beautiful Mexico together to be gay and free, after first faking us out with an unhappy ending before going, “Not so fast, straights!” L.O.L.

6. Wynonna Earp (2021): Waverly & Nicole

Continuing the Marry Your Gays grand tradition pioneers by Brittana/Klaine, WayHaught’s series trajectory follows what I hope will be the also much emulated Give The Gays Everything They Want trend.

Vacation Vixen: WayHaught Edition

I know we haven’t had a full debrief on the season/likely-to-possible series finale of “Wynonna Earp” yet. But let me just say than the show and its finale are so much more than fan service (but, goodness, what fan service). What this really was, despite all the demons or perhaps because of them, hopeful storytelling. And all the WayHaught goodness? Well, you cannot really ask for more of that. What makes a hero? What makes a family? Love, honestly. A whole lot of love.

A Fine Romance

You know the saying, “Gonna give the gays everything they want?” Well, that glorious Mother of Unicorns Emily Andras has taken that as marching orders in the best way possible. So far the remaining (and hopefully not last) six episodes of “Wynonna Earp” have been pure fandom Nirvana. The first two installments have been fun, adventurous and fun some more. They bring to mind some of the best Monsters of the Week “X-Files” episodes, but with a lot more gay stuff.

Speaking of The Gay, the show has gone full shipper service with its WayHaught storylines and references. You’ve got to give them credit, they know the Big Queer Bus (and our LGBTQ+ allies) that got them to where they are. And they’re going to do everything they can to give us the stories we deserve. The scenes between Waverly and Nicole this season have been wonderful, and also wonderfully swoony.

I mean, come on, having Nicole Haught don her old sheriff’s uniform and that white Stetson as she’s perfectly silhouette by the slowly setting sun? Please, lesbian romance novelists only dream of a moment that perfectly, spectacularly gay.

While I hope against hope that this fourth season will not be the last for this scrappy, big-hearted show, I trust it will continue to be an exuberant and refreshing ride for as long as it can. I can’t wait to see what hijinks they get into Friday night. I just know it’s gonna be gay.

p.s. Yeah, Emily, we totally noticed the hat callback. Noticed and very, very appreciated. Ahem.

My Weekend Crush(ing Loss)

Well, shit. Seriously, shit. Also fuck. And dammit, and fuck and dammit and shit some more. SyFy’s announcement late last week that Season 4 the last for our beloved “Wynonna Earp” is sad news indeed. I don’t know if there’s any possibilities for life elsewhere. (Hello, Hulu and the 30,000 other new streaming apps, would you like a show with a built-in and undyingly loyal fanbase that will fight like hell for its family? Just saying.) But even if this is really truly the end, our sadness should be tinged with pride. The series will always stand as a reminder to love what you love, in more ways than one. WayHaught’s love story is what happens when two adorable, and piping hot cinnamon rolls get together. And Earpers have been among the nicest, fiercest, bravest fandoms I’ve encountered. You put you love and work and even dollars into this show. And the show, and its creators (in particular Mother Unicorn Emily Andras), loved you right back. What a fun, crazy, unexpected, wild and joyous ride. No matter what, we’ll always have Purgatory. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. Come on, How fun does that look? So fun? Who wouldn’t want another season of that? COME. ON. Sigh.

WayHaught Wednesday

Have you had time to collectively process the return of “Wynonna Earp?” Well gals and guys and thems and theirs, saddle up, because the good times in Purgatory are back. I say good times because we’re all currently living in hell, so Purgatory seems like a nice step up. I mean, what I wouldn’t give to be given a big (metaphorical) gun to wipe out the world’s problems. The third season of the show premiered more than two years ago. But here we are, battle weary but victorious, able to enjoy the fruits of our hard-fought fight. You did this, fans. And, what did you think? Totally worth the wait, right?

It's Earping Time

Yes, yes, I know you’ve already watched it. Like you weren’t going to watch it again, anyway. The first trailer for the long-time-coming fourth season of “Wynonna Earp” has been released, and it’s what the kids of definitely not today called a real humdinger. I’m not sure there’s a show on TV that so seamlessly provides exceptional fans service while simultaneously serving up such good, fun stories. No wonder Earpers everywhere dropped everything to fight for Wynonna. And look what happens when we win? Sure, it took two years. But July 26 will be here sooner than you know it. And, goodness, do we have some demons to fight – in Purgatory and everywhere else.

My Weekend Crush

Well now, here is some genuinely wonderful news amid all the darkness. Dominique Provost-Chalkley, a.k.a. Waverly Earp a.k.a. Half of WayHaught a.k.a. The One from That Cheerleading Dance, has come out as queer. In a post commemorating her 30th birthday on her website, www.startthewave.org, the actress discussed her “journey to happiness.” Hint: It involves boys and girls and really all humans. And now she is out and proud about it.

She ended her post like this:

This also means that the real-life Nicole Haught (a.k.a Kat Barrell) and real-life Waveryly Earp (a.k.a. Dominique Provost-Chalkley) both like girls (and boys and whatever) in real life. Now, if that’s not something bring a little joy in dark times, I don’t know what is. Happy stay home and stay healthy weekend, kittens.

My Weekend Crush

You might have heard a mighty whoop on Jan. 15. It was Earpers the globe over rejoicing as filming started on the new, long-delayed fourth season of “WYnonna Earp.” As know all too well, financial troubles threatened to torpedo the show’s new season. So the #FightForWynonna campaign was launched and, damn, if fandom didn’t get things done.

Now, finally, the show is shooting. Production is expected to last through May in Calgary, and then will air in the summer on Space in Canada and Syfy in the U.S.

Show Creator/Lead Unicorn Emily Andras told the Calgary Herald:

“We tried to incorporate some of the values and feelings of the #fightforwynonna journey,” she says. “I think a lot of themes for Season 4 centre around the idea of fighting to protect what you love and your home and feelings of rebellion and resistance and the idea of being underdogs and fighting both bureaucracy and also evil seen and unseen. It’s that feeling of finding your people and making sure you are willing to go to war for the things you love and the people you love. If anything, I think those things have been reinforced thanks to #fightforwynonna.”
At least three new actors are also joining the cast this season: “Kim’s Convenience” star Andrew Phung, “Fortunate Son” actor Ty Olsson and 18-year-old actress/singer Martina Ortiz-Luis. I have absolutely no idea what characters they’ll be playing, but you know I’m excited to find out.

It’s been a long, fraught time for fans. And by the time we get new episodes it will be close to two years since Season 3 last premiered. But as they say, good things come to those who wait, and especially to those who fight for what they love. So welcome back, show. Can’t wait to see you. Happy weekend, all and Earpers.

My Weekend Crush

When it rains good news for our little shit show, it pours. Which is considerably better than the other kinds of rain the show could, uh, pour. (Shit, guys, I’m talking about shit.) So earlier this month it was announced season 4 of “Wynonna Earp” was finally going to begin production after IDW, the studio that produces the series, ran out of money and filming was delayed by months and months. Now thanks to additional kick-ins from both Syfy and Space (the show’s U.S. and Canadian partners) we’re back on track and demons better beware.

And now, even more good news for Earper Nation. In a new cover story with Diva magazine, series star Kat Barrell (a.k.a. Officer Nicole Haught) came out as being attracted to both men and women. The actress is married to a man, which I hope I don’t need to remind folks makes her no less bisexual. Alas, the profile touches on some of the flack she received in real life from fans about being with a man. Guys, we can enjoy and idolize our favorite stars, but their private lives are theirs alone.

With that, welcome officially to the Big Gay Family, Kat. As if there was any question she was one of ours. No one can lay a Lesbian Thirst Trap that well without being part of our big LGBTQ umbrella. Happy weekend, all.

Our Shit Show

Money, the bane of all human existence, is at it again. Money, that made up concept we give value and allow to rule our lives, is said to be the reason the new season of “Wynonna Earp” has been delayed. It’s also the reason we’re all been gearing up to #FightForWynonna on Twitter for more than a weeks now.

IDW Entertainment, the studio that produces “Wynonna Earp,” is apparently very short on cash. So short that the company has not started shooting the new season, which normally would have started shooting or December or January – at the latest. Instead we’re all kind of sitting on our hands while IDW figures out how to pay for the two new seasons it promised to deliver to Syfy.

It put out a statement that basically said we love this show, yadda-yadda-yadda, but we broke or something:

“IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story. Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series, but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.”
Now, fighting for our weird, endearing little shit show is nothing new for fellow Earpers. But it’s particularly disheartening when a show with such a committed, passionate and vocal fanbase has to basically beg, year after year, for more. What companies prioritize financially isn’t solely based on ratings or merit, and we all know it.

The constant instability shows like “Wynonna Earp” and “One Day At a Time” find themselves in is a reminder that it’s always a fight for some shows to survive – no matter how beloved.

Both “Wynonna Earp” and “ODAAT” are great woman-made, woman-fronted shows that highlight underrepresented voices to appreciative and often marginalized communities. We deserve more of both. But we’ll have to wait to see if we get it.

My Weekend Crush

Guys, we need this. We really, really need this. “Wynonna Earp” returns tonight. Well, it actually returned Monday night in a special sneak preview. But tonight it will be official official premiere with bonus material and additional scenes. Also, no harm can come from watching an episode of “Wynonna Earp” twice. No harm, indeed.

Look, the world is pretty terrible right now. Each headline is a new horror. The continual combination of rage and despair everyone with a functioning sense of empathy feels right now is beyond exhausting.

But through it all it’s important to remember that self-care is crucial. We can’t resist when we’re debilitated by our weariness. And one of the ways I care for myself is watching shows I truly enjoy. So this year shows like “Killing Eve” and “The Good Place” and “The Great British Bake Off” have been a salve to the soul.

And now, here comes Wynonna. I don’t need to remind you why this show is so fun and fantastic. You know, you know it down to your bones. So bring on the crazy chick with a gun and WayHaught sexy adorableness and all the demonic shenanigans this show can bring. If you caught the sneak peek you know we’re in for a wild ride and so much great hair. Bring it, Wynonna et al. We’re so glad to have you back. Happy Earping weekend, all.

Go Earp, Young Woman

My, what big EVERYTHING you have. Holy macaroni, there is a lot happing in the new “Wynonna Earp” Season 3 trailer. And I’m not even talking about the mechanical bull. Or WayHaught sexiness. All I know is this show can’t be coming back at a better time. Because there’s like nothing on TV right now. Welcome back, Purgatory. It’s been hell without you.

From A to Zoie

Holy Hotpants! Emily Andras is the Gay Gal Whisperer. She knows exactly what we want on our televisions. 1) Girls kissing? (Check!), 2) Anne of Green Gables? (Check!), and 3) Zoie freaking Palmer? (That’s Doctor Check to you). “Wynonna Earp” Season 3 is gonna be lezzy lit. I know, that’s lame. But the excitement is real and it’s spectacular.

First Megan Follows Anne Shirley is cast as Momma Earp. Now Zoie Palmer (aka Dr. Lauren Lewis aka Hot Pants aka the Doc in Doccubus) is cast as fun-loving, karaoke-singing friend of Earps, Jolene. She is described as someone who loves to bake and create mayhem who is also “smart, knows a secret or two and if you don’t watch out, she’ll either steal your partner or your heart.”

Please, please, please, (please, please, please) let Zoie flirt with Wynonna and/or Waverly and/or Officer Haught. Please. I mean, how could they resist, really?

Tuesday, February 06, 2018

Oh, Canadian TV

If you heard a loud, piercing squeal sometimes yesterday afternoon it was just me. I was just reacting to news that Megan Follows was joining the cast of “Wynonna Earp” in a recurring role as Momma Earp. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL!

This is Emily Andras making all of my wildest Canadian dreams come true. You all already know how much I love, love, love (love, love, love) Anne of Green Gables and Megan Follows. Interviewing Megan a few years ago was a fantasy bucket list accomplishment. And now, holy cow, is this just wonderful, wonderful casting.

I cannot wait to see the layers and loveliness that Megan brings to the show. She has always been a ferocious actress, capable of conveying intellect and introspection so clearly. I have no doubt she will be perfect as Momma Earp. In fact I cannot wait.

Also perfect, Emily’s response to casting Megan:

Thank you so much, Canada, for giving us something so great to look forward to in 2018.

No Wavering on Waverly

Things I didn’t know about Dominique Provost-Chalkley (a.k.a. the ever-adorable and thankfully no longer black-eyed, demon-possessed Waverly Earp).

1. She can dance. Like really, really dance.

2. She is British. Like really, really British.

I don’t know how it took me this long to realize either one. I blame not knowing about her British accent because I am one of those people who prefers reading interviews to watching them (sorry all media companies and your insane video pushes) and therefore just had never heard her speak out loud outside of her character. I also credit her incredible acting because I did not hear even a hint of that British-person-doing-an-American-accent thing you often hear when a British person does an American accent. But now that I know what her true voice sounds like, HELLO.

As for the dancing thing, well, I should have guessed after that “everyone’s thing”-cheerleading routine. And her well-toned midriff is continually on display on the show. Is that like written into her contract or what. But check it, homegirl can move.

Right, as if there weren’t enough reasons to love Dominique and WayHaught already. But, just to be safe, better watch that cheerleading scene one more time.

p.s. I could not be more thrilled by the news from over the weekend that “Wynonna Earp” has been picked up for a third season. (Way)Haught damn, that is well deserved.

Haught Uniform

You guys, YOU GUYS. We need to talk about Officer Way Haught’s new uniform. Her totally Haught/hot new uniform. Her full bonkers/bananapants new uniform.

Oh, Emily Andras, you’ve done it again. You’ve given lesbians, bi girls and general lovers of beautiful ladies everywhere another gift from the queer lady heavens. This uniform, THIS UNIFORM. Like, are there a lot of underwater crimes in Purgatory? Because, dude, that thing is a wet suit if I’ve ever seen one.

Old Uniform:

New Uniform:

Whatever the reason, I applaud the Purgatory Sheriff Department for its ridiculously form-hugging sartorial choices. I also applaud the ditching of the khakis. Let’s face it, no one looks their best in khakis. I mean, Officer Haught did her best and sure filled them out as nicely as possible. But, yeah, bless this wet suit/sheriff’s uniform.
