Be(She)Deviled

Um, hello, I know there’s nothing explicitly sapphic about “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” But there’s Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt looking better than ever. So of course it appeals to my extremely gay sensibilities. Duh, I have eyes. Releasing this and “Mother Mary” back-to-back may almost be too much for my wlw heart to take. Almost.

Tank Top Tuesday: Quarantine Fighter Edition

Since it’s Pride Month and you deserve nice things, here is a Very Special Tank Top Tuesday: Quarantine Fighter Edition. We’ve all been fighting the good fight staying home and wearing masks when we can't. As a reward we get to pick which of these badass ladies in tank tops is the best Quarantine Fighter to represent us best during these challenging/stressful/frightening/enraging times. Inspired by Charlize Theron returning to her Action Mode with bonus Short-Hair Mode in “The Old Guard” (not to mention that bitchin' Boss Bitch Battle) here are some more female action stars showing us how it’s done. Now all there is left is to choose wisely. Who is your True Quarantine Fighter?

Charlize Theron

Mackenzie Davis

Tessa Thompson

Alicia Vikander

Emily Blunt

Evangeline Lilly

Gal Gadot

Maggie Q

Margot Robbie

Brie Larson

p.s. Who are we kidding? We’re all Brie. Now, pass the cookies.

SGALGG: Oscars Edition

I told you it was coming. Though, considering all the LGBTQ moments this year, it seems the Gay Gals are getting jealous of all the Straight Gals acting like them. Sunday’s ceremony showcased the wonderful talent of the out queer female nominees, attendees and winners. Like Daniela Vega who became the first openly transgender person to ever present at the Oscars. And we haven’t even touched on Olympic skater Adam Rippon’s tuxedo harness. Besides all the really, really gay, the awards had a lot of straight women holding hands because they love throwing off our collective gaydar. Like I feel like they’re trying to make SGALGG now; how else can you explain the huge cuddle puddle that all the losing best actress nominees made together? Exactly. Also, I’m pretty sure one of the winners thanked his cats. I even rewound to make sure my ears hadn’t translated it to lesbian.

So here are some of the rest of the great SGALGG & GGALGG moments of the night.

Jane Fonda & Helen Mirren

I would watch this rom-com about two ladies who find love later in life.

Emily Blunt & Guest

News Flash: Mary Poppins is practically gay in every way.

Gal Gadot & Lupita Nyong'o

Themyscira meets Wakanda.

Gal Gadot & Margot Robbie

Fine, Wonder Woman has a thing for disgraced figure skaters too.

Laura Dern & Greta Gerwig

Look, I told you I wasn’t kidding about the hand holding.

Also, these two totally continued off stage.

Everyone Wants to Touch Meryl

Viola does.

Nicole definitely does.

J-Law is just being greedy.

Jennifer Lawrence & Salma Hayek

See, greedy.

Lupita Nyong’o & Danai Gurira

Wakanda forever, indeed.

Octavia Spencer & Sally Hawkins

I would have rather she wound up with Octavia than the fish, to be honest.

Janelle Monae

Obligatory Janelle post.

And now for the GGALGGs to show them how it’s really done.

Jodie Foster & Frances McDormand

Crutches won’t slow her down.

p.s. Yes, Jodie is a tiny little garden gnome compared to J-Law, and most people really.

Rachel Morrison & Rachel Garza

The first woman ever to be nominated for best cinematography and her wife on the red carpet. Yeah, that sounds nice.

Dee Rees & Sarah M. Broom

And out filmmaker Dee, who hired Rachel in the first place, brought her wife with her on the red carpet. Also sounds so nice.

Darla K. Anderson

The out Coco producer thanked her wife, and her producing partner thanked his husband.

Kimberly Peirce, Evren Savci & Emily Blunt

I mean, hitting on Emily in front to your wife is bold. But, perhaps she’s on her “list.” And she saw all her hand holding business from before, so gave it a shot.

Ooey-Gooey Godness

So besides that “Lemonade” spoof on this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” by far the best moment of the night was Emily Blunt making Kate McKinnon break – ever so slightly – during a skit. This moment is glorious on so many levels. The first is that Kate rarely breaks character, even a little. So this is a rare sight indeed. The second is that, hello, was this hot or what? Like, I cannot be the only gay lady who sat up a little and was like, “Why, hello.” Is it possible to ship something after only 23 seconds? Look, Kate may not want Emily’s ooey-gooey, yummy-yummy delicious quesadilla. But how about her pink taco? Ay-oh!

See the whole skit here yourself. Have we decided on a shipper name? Kemily? McBlunt?

Tall Glass of

Whenever the ladies of SNL get together for a music video, you know it’s going to be good. And this, this is pretty good. The show is finally starting to tighten up its Trump skewering. You know it is starting to work when that thin-skinned narcissistic circus peanut says the show should be cancelled. Enjoy!

The Cold Never Bothered Them Anyway

I was not terribly impressed with 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Sure, it was a gorgeous thing to look at. But its core was a mess with problematic messaging about the motivation for its central villain and blandly passive heroine. Also, can’t Snow White be the hero of her own story without a Huntsman to rescue her? (Yes, yes, I know original source material blah blah blah.) Still, I can’t help but be a little more excited for its sequel (and, I think, prequel), “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Granted, now the central character is full-on said Huntsman. But, goodness, how they’ve upped their awesome ladies quotient. Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, oh my!

The movie, once again, looks like a visual smorgasbord. And if the trailer is to be believed, we finally have an action movie where the ladies, instead of the dudes, drive the narrative. Plus, I’m just a sucker for anything that had women kicking ass. And you really can’t resist Charlize vamping it up with regal wickedness once more.

Granted, it does look a tad like, “Frozen: Elsa’s Revenge.” The cold never bothered them, anyway. But, you know what, I’ll let it go for the sake of the potential badassery.

My only other complaint: The snow-white cast. Just like it’s seemingly impossible for The Hollywood Reporter to think of a single actress of color to invite to its award-season roundtable, here is yet another Hollywood film with little to no (I think I saw a few black soldiers in there, maybe) diversity. I find it particularly galling in a fantasy film like this where the entire universe it inhabits is divorced from the restraints of reality. That’s not to say more realistic films get a free pass, but fantasies like this are only accountable to one’s imagination. So then to still cast a predominantly all-white is just a failure of creativity. Get it together, Hollywood. The world has always existed in beautiful Technicolor. Now if only your movies did, too.

Tank Top Tuesday: Wrecking Ball Edition

Do believe the hype. Do. If you have not watched the Anne Hathaway vs. Emily Blunt “Lip Sync Battle” episode, run – do not walk – to your television. It is one of the most fun half hours of television you will watch this year. The show is just a joy. I mean, if your heart isn’t filled with indescribable happiness while watching the full video of Anne Hathaway sing “Wrecking Ball” in a tank top and tightie whities then I highly doubt your ability to feel glee. This is my new go-to video to watch when I need a little pick me up. How can the world possibly be all terrible when this is happening? It can’t, that’s how. Yep, this is what happens when high school drama nerds really, really go for it as adults, folks. Happy Tuesday, universe.

So, you know how I’m an enormous lezzie, right? Well if you’ve been here any length of time you also know I’m an enormous feminist. I think the two go hand-in-hand, actually. The thought of separating myself into identity compartments that never overlap or interplay is ludicrous. Anyway, you know this already of course because it’s the same for you. That’s why we’re all here hanging out in the first place.

So given that context it gives me great pleasure to announce that I’ve started writing for Indiewire’s fantastic Women and Hollywood, run by the tireless Melissa Silverstein. I’ll be their queer columnist and write a couple times a month for the site.

Don’t worry, I’m still going to be writing and recapping for AfterEllen. And I’m still gonna keep typing up my brain rambles here of course.

I’d appreciate it greatly if you’d hop over to Women and Hollywood and take a look (and leave a comment if so inclined) at my first column. In it I tackle the essential lesbian entertainment question: “Do we need another ‘L Word?’” A sampling:

The urgency to see ourselves reflected on the TV screen isn’t as great because we’re already there. Sure, we may not be there en masse in one show, but we’re on so many others we are no longer so desperate we’ll drink the sand. And, just as crucially, the diversity of lesbian and bisexual female characters has increased.
You can read the whole thing here. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and reading the crazy things that go through my head.

As a further thanks, here’s Anne Hathaway singing “Wrecking Ball” to Emily Blunt. First the grinding. Now this. I just, I just think we live in such wondrous times.

My Weekend Crush

The appeal of some stuff is a no-brainer. Beautiful women in tank tops? Thank you, ma’am, may I have another? Beautiful women in a tailored suit? Yes, all of the yes. Beautiful women lip-synching while grinding on each other? Shut up, I’m gaving a religious experience. Granted, there may or may not be a common denominator in all these things. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Wait, wait, is it a question mark? But, whatever, you get my point.

I’ve been a fan of Jimmy Fallon’s Lip Sync battles because they’re good, clean – sometimes not so clean – fun. So I’m pretty thrilled they’ve turned them into their own show. And I am also more than thrilled to see this little preview of Emily Blunt battling Anne Hathaway. To quote me, when discussing any of the above-mentioned common denominators, “I like her, she looks smart.” Yep, smart. Happy weekend, all.

Suit & Tie

I am still not over this. I will never be over this. I would never want to be over this. This it it. Forever.

Gender Fuck Thursday: The Payoff

Remember back in May when Cate Blanchett, Emily Blunt and Zhou Xun were walking and boating around Portofino in the most impeccable tuxedos you’ve ever seen in your whole damn life and your entire body was like, UNF GURGLE FAINT? Remember? Well, the finished images and video from that heaven-send photoshoot have been released, finally.

Yes, yes, it’s for a stupid watch commercial. Yes, yes, I agree Ewan McGregor and Christoph Waltz are a waste of valuable time we could be staring at Cate, Emily and Xun. But, sweet fancy Moses, is that a lot of gorgeous happening. I can’t even decide which pictures I like best.

Like, which Cate is better? This?

Or this?

Which Emily? This?

Or This?

Which Xun? This?

Or this, with bonus Emily?

THERE IS NO WAY TO CHOOSE DON’T MAKE ME, YOU MONSTER.

I’m not even kidding when I say many days I’d rather look at a woman in an impeccably tailored suit than a tiny string bikini. This is one of those days. There’s just so much richness for the eyes to linger on. The mystery and the elegance.

Oh, shut up, idiot. It’s hot. It’s just fucking hot. They look hot. They make you hot. Everything’s hot. In conclusions, to summarize, as I was saying, HOT.

OK, IWC. I will buy all of your dumb watches immediately if each one comes with a Cate, Emily of Xun of our choice – preferably all three. In suits. The suits are non-negotiable. Seriously, keep the watches. Leave the ladies in the suits.

p.s. I made this gif for you because I love you. Ciao, bella.
