Women Wondering

Well, here’s some bullshit. No more Wonder Women movies. Yes, we still have to endure that Flash movie from that actor who can’t stop getting arrested and harassing, um, everyone. But the world’s greatest female superhero, Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins? They get unceremoniously dumped because, well, it’s hard to say what the fuck DC/Warner/HBO is doing right now. Look, I loved the first movie and I was greatly disappointed by the second movie. But in my lifetime I’ve also sat through no less than 11 Batman movies. Eight Spider-Man movies. Six Superman movies. And about a bazillion X-Men movies. Yet we get only two shots at Wonder Woman? It’s a wonder why women don’t get as many chances. Real mystery. Plus still owe us that Amazons on Themyscira origin story, let alone more Wonder Women. More super women stories in 2023 and beyond, not less please universe.

Tank Top Tuesday: Seeing Double

And, I am back. I come bearing the "My Blogger Went On Summer Vacation and All I Got Was This Stupid Tank Top Tuesday"-T-shirt. Granted, not all these famous actresses with their stunt doubles are both wearing tank tops. But some of them are. And others are definitely showing off the only kind of gun show I approve of. So, yeah, it counts. Like you were gonna complain about your gift after I showed you Tessa Thompson and Tara Macken in their matching sleeveless Valkyrie/King of Asgard battle outfits.

Uma Thurman & Zoe Bell, Kill Bill

Two tank tops and yellow tracksuits will always be better than one.

Margot Robbie & Ingrid Kleinig, Suicide Squad

Honestly, I mostly feel for the costume designer who has to make identical rips in their T-shirts.

Caitriona Balfe & Kristin Gribbin, Outlander

This looks like the start of an epic lesbian action-adventure movie.

Kate McKinnon & Meredith Richardson, Ghostbusters

I don’t care how hard the dude-bros cry, the Lady Ghostbusters were great and they shoulda made a sequel.

Bryce Dallas Howard & Whitney Coleman, Jurassic World

I still think it’s dumb they had her in heels in the first place for this, but I appreciate the tank tops regardless.

Gal Gadot & Christiaan Bettridge, Wonder Woman

Seeing double plus kissing a double is always good.

Gay Gal

Every now and then you hear a story description and you go, huh, wonder if that’s any good/gay? Well, that’s my exact current state when it comes to the news that Gal Gadot and her production company will adapt a “queer sci-fi” movie. Based on the novel “Meet Me in Another Life,” the story as Deadline describes it “centers on a man and woman who must unravel why they continue to meet in different versions of reality—a genre-bending, thrilling and imaginative exploration of the infinite forms of love and how choices can change everything.”

So, if I’m hearing this right, it’s a little “Orlando” crossed maybe with “Cloud Atlas.” Which sounds intriguing indeed. And different lives certainly set up the possibility for queer storylines and all this talk of gender-bending certainly speaks of non-binary relationships. My question is, how will it play out? And, not to be blunt, but exactly how gay is it?

I have not read the book, which just came out late last month. So if you have, clue a lesbian blogging community member in? Exactly how excited should I be getting that Gal will star in the leading role here? Are we talking Kate McKinnon accidentally rows herself onto Themyscira excited?

Wonder(fully) Laughing Woman Wednesday

It’s probably not the best sign when the gag reel for the new Wonder Woman movie is better than the actual Wonder Woman movie. But, look, I’ll take what I can get at this point after the disappointment that was “Wonder Woman 1984.” And while Steve Trevor’s mysterious presence in the sequel was its main and overwhelming problem (look, who amongst us hasn’t wanted their long-dead boyfriend back - except all of us lesbians of course), Chris Prine’s presence in the blooper montage is actually fairly delightful. But it’s most delightful because of Chris’s reaction to Gal Gadot’s giggle. Though, to be even fairer, the gag reel’s appeal is all about Gal’s giggle. Wonder Woman defeated by laughing fits? Yeah, I’d watch a whole movie of that. But I must insist - despite everything I’ve said about Chris Pine’s loveliness - that Steve Trevor remains dead in any and all future installments.

Wonder Women Wednesday

I think we can all agree that the best part of “Wonder Woman 1984” was its post-credit scene. (I’ll say spoilers here, but seriously, it’s been almost four months.) Anyway, you know the scene, where we see a striking woman walking through a packed market only to effortlessly saves a woman and her baby from being crushed by a falling pole. And that woman, yeah, she happened to be original Wonder Woman herself Lynda Carter. Yeah, it almost made those two-and-a-half hours of wondering why Steve Trevor was alive again worth it. But, I was a little disappointed there was no direct contact between Wonder Woman Version 1.0 Lynda and Wonder Woman Version 2.0 Gal Gadot. Well, thankfully, they did have another happy meeting while on set for the sequel. With kisses no less. Look, sometimes you’ve got to enjoy the little things. Like the two Wonder Women being wonderful women together. Not bad for a Wednesday, really. Not bad at all.

WW84 or Should We Say 86-ed?

So that was disappointing. After waiting – and waiting and waiting and waiting – for the release of “Wonder Woman 1984” and then waiting a little longer to watch it on Christmas Day, I pretty much don’t understand why this movie exists. I mean I get why it exists: successful first movies in a potential blockbuster franchise, particularly those based on superheroes, typically result in sequels which are incredibly lucrative marketing opportunities as well as international moneymakers. So, you know, sell those toys. But as far as a narrative reason for existing? It’s pretty hard to figure out why except someone on whatever focus-grouped committee wrote this mediocre monstrosity is the world’s No. 1 Steve Trevor fan.

Now, having said all that, I am still glad the movie has been (relatively, all pandemics considered) successful and resulted in the immediate green-lighting of a third Wonder Woman movie. Women deserve to be behind the camera, (not to mention every room where decisions are being made), period. Despite not loving her sophomore effort, Patty Jenkins deserves all the franchises you throw at her. Like, say, being the first woman to direct a “Star Wars” movie. And, with any luck her return to Diana Prince will center the woman behind the W (instead of her long-dead boyfriend and or a wish-granting baddie who somehow receives a full redemptive arc), so we all get the female superhero we deserve again.

Still, Hollywood has this annoying habit of consolidating its talent and franchises into giant monopolies helmed by the precious few (see J.J. Abrams with “Star Wars” and “Star Trek”). So while I am pretty excited about what Patty will do with “Rogue Squadron,” I can’t help but wish they’d spread the love. Imagine a “Star Wars” movie helped by Gina Prince-Bythewood (of this year’s spectacular “The Old Guard,” a movie so good WW84 only wishes it could polish its labrys)?

So, thoughts on WW84? Did you hate it, or did you hate it? No wrong answers, unless you loved in. In which case you Steve Trevor Fan Club pin is already in the mail.

p.s. The hands-down best thing about WW84 is the suprise mid-credit extra scene. Trust me, it is worth it even if the film is not.

What a Wonder

Will everyone wear a damn mask and stop going out in non-household groups so I can see this movie in the theaters sometimes before the world ends? I have no idea how they’re going to explain Steve’s return (parachute pants and all). And I have no idea how Kristen Wiig morphs into, well, that (here, kitty kitty). But, damn, do I want to find out. Of all the imagery in this trailer, I think I’m most excited to see we’re getting more flashback to Amazon life and Themyscira. I’m also thrilled to see the Amazons wearing full-body suits with leggings. Like, they can’t always fight in skirt, OK?

My Weekend Crush

So I rewatched “Captain Marvel” last week, the first time since I saw it in the theaters. And in many ways it’s underrated. But it’s also pretty conventional in other ways. Superhero origin story meets female empowerment storyline. I still think “Wonder Woman” is a better movies, just in its construction and emotional impact. But it’s wild that pretty much those two are our only two modern female superhero stories to choose from on the big screen. So, naturally, we end up pitting them against each other.

Yet men have a billionaire guy who dresses as a bat, a guy who shoots spider webs from his hands, a guy who shrinks like an ant, a guy who is the world’s biggest Boy Scout with a shield, a guy who talks with fish, another billionaire guy who builds himself a superhero suit, a guy who is an actual god, and an alien guy with a big red S on his chest…just to name a few. All I’m saying is, superhero ladies gotta stick together. Or kiss. I’m also fine with kissing. Happy weekend, all.

SGALGG/GGALGG: Oscars Edition

Told ya it was coming. So outside of Janelle Monae representing for queer black artists to start the shows, the Oscars were a pretty straight affair. At least, what we saw on television was pretty straight. As we all know, hand out a few shiny trophies and let the champagne flow and suddenly Straight Gals Acting Like Gay Gals are everywhere – or at least everywhere in the eye of the beholder. But, as has been a welcome trend these last few years, there also actual Gay Gals Acting Like Gay Gals. Queer women came out in their finest this Oscar season. So it appears even lesbians and bisexual women are attracted to golden naked men. Who knew.

Brie Larson, Sigourney Weaver & Gal Gadot

I’m not really a threesome person, but YES PLEASE LET ME WATCH.

Laura Dern & Renee Zellweger

Bridget Jones’s Later-in-Life Lesbianism

Scarlett Johansson & Florence Pugh

It’s so unfair they’ve cast Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz in the new “Black Widow” movie, because now I have to see it.

Geena Davis & Sandra Oh

No, they’re not doing anything particularly gay. But they’re Geena Davis and Sandra Oh standing together in beautiful dresses. So, duh, gay interest.

Natalie Portman

No, Natalie isn’t doing anything particularly gay. But she has the names of all the female directors snubbed this year for the Oscars embroidered on her coat hem in a sign of feminist solidarity and as we all know any feminism worth a damn is intersectional which means it would include the concerns of POC and the LGBTQ community. So, duh, gay interest.

Regina King

No, Regina isn’t doing anything particularly gay. But have you seen her arms and that dress? So, duh, gay interest.

Salma Hayek & Penelope Cruz

I’ve had dreams that started like this, Part I.

Margot Robbie & Charlize Theron

The strong top energy coming off Charlize as she watches over Margot reading her program is palpable.

Jessica Alba & Sofía Vergara

I’ve had dreams that started like this, Part II.

Greta Gerwig & Saoirse Ronan

I’m usually not cool with maestros getting handsy with their ingénue’s, but you know what? I’ll allow it.

Jane Fonda & Olivia Colman

Women of a certain age can totally get it.

GGALGG: Oscars Edition

Janelle Monae & Billy Porter

It’s like we’re witnessing the coolest wizard convention in the universe.

Beanie Feldstein & Kaitlyn Dever

Out queer actress who played straight with her straight actress friend who played gay.

Janet Mock, Lena Waithe & Rashida Jones

Proof that LGBTQ people totally still like straight people.

Maria Bello & Dominique Crenn

Mazel tov to the newly engaged couple!

Tessa Thompson & Amandla Stenberg

Just two incredibly talented, out, black queer actresses dancing at an Oscars party in the year 2020. Sometimes, it’s almost like we are living in the future.

Like, Totally Wonder Woman

That was – as the kids in 1984 would say – totally tubular. The new “Wonder Woman”/”Stranger Things” trailer has me all jazzed to jump in my DeLorean and go to the mall. I have no idea how Steve Trevor is back, and still young and hot. And I’m not fooled by Kristen Wiig, that woman is a Cheetah in nerd’s clothing. I thought “Wonder Woman” was an excellent superhero movie – one of my favorites. And with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot teaming up again my hopes are just as high.

And the trailer even gives us a tantalizing glimpse of Themyscira. Though, with all due respect to the cowbell, this trailer needs more Amazons. But then, really, everything could use more amazon. Bitchin’ soundtrack though. And this new battle armor is so freakin rad. So rad.

Tank Top Tuesday: Gif-tasic Edition

Women in tank tops are a thing of beauty. Women in tank tops moving in an eternal loop of hotness are also a thing of beauty. You’re welcome.

Tessa Thompson

Evangeline Lilly

Alicia Vikander

Janelle Monae

Daisy Ridley

Gal Gadot

Anne Hathaway

Anna Silk

Zoie Palmer
