Happy Thanksgiving, Kittens

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! Now, the Thanksgiving movie is the rare bird among holiday movies (see what I did there, bird). But there are some notable ones. And the best ones always have a gay undercurrent. Hello, “Home for the Holidays” directed by Jodie freaking Foster. I rest my case. But lest we forget in 2000 the universe have us “What’s Cooking?” While not perhaps a great movie, it was a great attempt at a multicultural framing of a traditional American holiday. And did I mention that Kyra Segdwick and Julianna Margulies play LESBIAN LOVERS? They’re pregnant of course, because this was a movie with lesbians in it from the early 2000s. I forgot how, uh, suggestive that split-second turkey stuffing scene was. And people say Julianna doesn’t make a convincing lesbian on “The Morning Show.” As a non-watcher, I can’t judge (well, except for some well-edited clips, ahem). But 21 years ago, I think she earned her honorary toaster oven. I mean, obviously, lose the bandana. But otherwise, passable. Happy turkey (and other things) stuffing day, all.

My Weekend (Out of Nowhere) Crush

Um, what? Dammit? Now do I have to get a damn Apple TV+ steamer subscription too? It’s too many! It’s TOO MANY! OK, now that my Old Woman Yells at Cloud (Streaming Subscription Service Abundance)-moment is over, can I just say where in the world did that come from? I know about “The Morning Show,” but despite its impressive cast I wasn’t won over because of so many middling reviews. Plus, there’s already Too Much Television (see previous rant). But now the show has gone and given Reese Witherspoon’s character, Bradley, a High Profile Lady Kiss out of nowhere with Julianna Margulies’s guest character, Laura. Though, and again I have never watched this show even once, should we really be that surprised? Her character is named Bradley. Hello. Anyway, now I feel obligated to follow along because that’s a lot of Oscar/Emmy-caliber talent giving traditional Sweeps Weeks Lesbianism the old college try here. I have no context for the moment other than its quick backseat setup. And, uh, it kind of seemed like Bradley did it to get out of a tough spot with Laura. But, whatever, I’ll take it. It’s Reese and Julianna K-I-S-S-I-N-G and that’s enough for me. What? I’m but a simple woman who likes seeing women smooching other women. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. So, subscribers, was there more smooching this week?

My Weekend Crush

Fifteen years is a hell of a long time. It's almost half of my life and basically all of my adult life. And during that time, there has been one constant at 10 p.m. every Thursday. That familiar, muted siren sound, followed by a simple sequence of keys was almost comforting. Admittedly, I stopped watching “ER” years ago. I can only name a few of the current cast and I have no idea where the story has taken them. (Seriously, why was Rory Gilmore there last night?) But what I do know is that when I did watch, “ER” was some damn good television.

The thing I always enjoyed about the show was that women were integrated and integral to its stories. This was not a show about men doctors telling female nurses what to do. This was a show with men and women, in all different jobs and with all different skills, working together to save lives. It was intense and almost always interesting. And, oh, the wonderful women – and even a few gay ones to boot. [Hat tip, The Linster!] I'm partial, of course, to the casts from the earlier seasons when I used to watch slavishly.

Julianna Margulies, Sherry Stringfield, Gloria Reuben, Laura Innes, Jorja Fox – now that's some talent. And then later Alex Kingston, Maria Bello, Elizabeth Mitchell, Maura Tierney, I could go on forever. What was always great about “ER” was that it showed these women in their professional setting, doing what they do best without the burden of glamour. Sure, they were all certainly above-average attractive, but that wasn't the focus. That they were good at their jobs and they were passionate about their work – this was what mattered. Their profession was never secondary, it was the point. Or, just maybe, I'm a sucker for a woman in a lab coat with a stethoscope. Thanks for 15 years, ladies. Happy weekend, all.

I need snakes off a plane, STAT!

Something tells me this is not what Julianna Margulies had in mind when she left ER.

I mean, when your costar goes from George Clooney to an angry python you have to start wondering about your career choices. Sure, the movie has garnered unprecedented internet buzz because of its B-movie title and plot. (You’ve got snakes. You’ve got a plane. You’ve got a blockbuster, baby!). But I doubt she ever thought when she turned down $27 million to stay one more season on ER in 2000 that a scant six years later she would be wielding an axe at a some slithery menaces while Samuel L. Jackson screamed, “I want these motherfucking snakes off the motherfucking plane!”

Deep down, you know Julianna was hoping this movie would die the quick direct-to-video death it probably deserves, she would collect a tidy paycheck and the world would keep wondering, “Whatever happened to that nice Nurse Hathaway?”
