Take a Chair

I don’t even care that Sandra Oh’s starring role in her new Netflix series seems aggressively (like, #metoo aggressively and everything) straight. I just care that it’s another showcase for her unendingly expressive face, and her equally unending talent. Plus, I like her with those bouncy curls for this role. They really work. Speaking of work, that’s two series in a row now that have starred Sandra. Not just the-best-friend-but-definitely-still-supporting-cast Sandra like so many of her other projects. “Killing Eve” has been a glorious fulfillment of abilities. I will not say potential, because she could always do this – it’s just that no one gave her the chance to shine quite this brightly before because, well, we all know the reasons because (cough, racism, sexism, racism, cough).

Anyway, her show seems topical and while it also seems aggressively straight hopefully its tightly strung zany energy results in some very fine comedy. And Amnada Peet is its creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. Yes, that Amanda Peet.

Also, I saw you Holland Taylor. I hope Holland brought Sarah to the set and Sarah and Sandra got to meet and become BFFs and star in highest-grossing female buddy dramedy road trip movie of all time. And, as long as we’re shooting our shots here, make it gay. Boom, free idea, Hollywood. Wait, even better! I jus remembered Amanda and Sarah are like longtime BFFS already, so obvi, she was on set to see her BFF and her lady. So she’s already met Sandra. And that movie is a go. I love it when a plan comes together.

Vacation Vixen: Twofer

Apologies, I was traveling yesterday. And then today I was recouping from traveling. If napping was an Olympic sport, I would be a champion this week. So here is my twofer makeup for my lack of vixens. Sarah and Amanda make a smart couple in smart tuxedos. Maybe Ryan Murphy could make them a couple on the next chapter of American Horror Story. Wait, on second thought, couples on that show have a terrible track record. And the last thing we need is more dead lesbians on television - or anywhere else. Wear those tuxes in peace, ladies.

Studio 60 sends me to Cloud 9

Well, that was lovely. I’ve been a fan of “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” since its pilot blew me away with its smarts, wit and backbone. Today, I’m as much a fan as ever (OK, the skits could be considerably funnier). But overall, big kuddos. Monday's episode (the last before the new year) was an early Christmas gift. Funny. Principled. Romantic. The show has two of my four favorite female characters from the new season: Jordan McDeere (the brilliant Amanda Peet) and Harriet Hayes (the brilliant and out Sarah Paulson). All season long we've been treated to layered portrayals of interesting, intelligent and independent women.

Last night both actresses got to add “love interest” to that list. Now, I realize praising an episode where both women’s roles primarily boils down to “romantic foil for lead male character” might seem like a blight on my feminist street cred. Hey, let’s face it, everyone loves romance. That’s why romantic comedies are so popular. Note how when movies are about married couples, they’re usually called “dramas.” But, getting back to my point, Studio 60 makes me happy I own a television. Really happy. Get a little happy for yourself and watch the full episode online.

p.s. In case you were wondering, my other two favorites from the new season are Ugly Betty’s Betty Suarez and 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon.
