Vacation Vixen: Lucy & Julien

I mean, if these two aren’t just the cutest, most Ralph Lauren pair you’ve ever seen. It’s like the cute preppy heartthrob in the 80s high school movie, but lesbians. And so on theme, Lucy and Julien, given the first day of 2026 is a Thursday.

Tank Top Tuesday: Plain White Tank Edition

You know it, you love it. The plain white tank. No, we will not ever again call it that thing we used to call it in the late 1990s and early 2000s. But we can certainly still appreciate this classic. Though, just to be safe, how about we ban men from wearing them? You know, until we can figure out what is going on. There’s a lot of stuff we should ban them from, but I guess we gotta start somewhere. So, let us decree it, the plain white tank is for women only. Now, onto everything else. Until then, please enjoying these ladies exercising their right to bare arms. No, obviously, not that kind.

Renee Rapp

I’m mad at whoever didn’t turn the camera horizontal here. But, not at Renee. Never at Renee.

Samira Wiley

I could never look that cool leaning over to play pool with armholes that big. Respect.

Jodi Balfour

It just still makes me so stoked that she is married to Abbi Jacobson. I feel like “Broad City” Abbi would be just as stoked – probably more.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

More than 20 years later and SMG can still hit that Buffy pose flawlessly. Like if the apocalypse comes, I definitely think we should still beep her.

Melissa King

She looks great in a plain white tank and backwards ballcap AND she can cook? Nini, damn girl.

Lucy Dacus

New goal unlocked: Be serenaded with haunting, ethereal sad lesbian love songs by a hottie wearing a plain white tank top.

Kate Moennig

Forever Shane, Shane Forever.

Gender Fuck Thursday: Big Suited Sapphics

Look, nobody loves this Really Big Suits trend on female celebrities more than me. Hello, I named a whole day after my obsession with women in suits. But lest all those straight starlets forget, the lesbians and other WLWs were the O.G. And, obviously, we wear it the best. And here are just a few choice receipts.

Jenna Lyons

Pinstripe always.

Sarah Paulson

Oh, Paulson. You scamp.

Amandla Stenberg

As I was saying about pinstripe.

Lucy Dacus

Is she starring in a Cameron Crowe movie, or is she a lesbian?

Renee Rapp & Towa Bird

Per my previous emails about pinstripes.

Kate Moennig & Leisha Hailey

Shane and Alice 4Eva (but, platonically, because ew).

A Shave & a Gaycut

Who remembers 1993? Honestly, when you think about it, it’s still a little shocking some 30+ years later that k.d. lang and Cindy Crawford – arguably the most famous supermodel of her era – were on the cover of Vanity Fair like this. Because, truly, this is so gay. So. Gay. Yes, yes, I know this was part of that momentary “lesbian chic” moment we had there in the 90s. But this image is still so strikingly queer that 32 years later Lucy Dacus and Katie Gavin can recreate it for Alternative Press and it still feels fresh and hot and, yes, SO GAY. Lesian chic this, queer ladies of all generations. Happy Hump Day, kittens.

My Weekend Crush

Well, well, well. Aren’t we in the era of confirmations of gay shit we totally knew (i.e. Rio was Nicky’s other mother et al). While promoting her new solo album “Forever Is a Feeling,” singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus confirmed she was in a relationship with her boygenius bandmate Julien Baker. I know, I know – duh. But these days confirmations of verifiable facts are few and far between. So it’s lovely that Lucy made it official, official in a series of interviews including with the New Yorker and People. Missing out on boygenius’s supercaligaygilistic 2023 tour is a bit of a regret of mine. But, at least we’ll have the photographic memories. Like, do you think every icon they’re photographed with here knew?

Did Meryl tell them to move their relationship at a glacial pace?

Was Joan Baez like, aw, which one is Diamond and which one is Rust?
And given this photo with Billie Eilish was taken in December 2023 – four months before she herself came out in her April 2024 Rolling Stone cover story – was she like, guys, I also have a secret?
Finally, I’d like to note that my clear cropping out of Phoebe Bridgers is not bisexual erasure (she has been with standup Bo Burnham since 2022, not that there’s anything wrong with that), but because who needs a third wheel around all the time? Amirite, ladies? Anyway, I kept her in with Taylor because, well, those Gaylor rumors won’t perpetuate themselves.
Anyway, mazel tov to Lucy and The Little One. May you continue to be each other’s best guess at the future forever. Also, no matter what the Internet may have already landed on, imma call them "Jucy." Happy weekend, all.

Gender Fuck Thursday: Lucy’s Hot Masc Edition

If it wasn’t for the whole Christo-fascist takeover and oligarch-led looting of the United States government and all, it would be an awesome time to be a young lesbian. Like, you have multiple – multiple – famous queer female music artists to choose from. You have your boygenius and your Renee Rapp and your Doechii and your Chappell Roan and your Billie Eilish and your Brandi Carlile and your Janelle Monae and even your JoJo Siwa – if you’re into that sort of thing, poor dears.

So I appreciate the very specific masc aesthetic Lucy Dacus evokes in her new music video for “Best Guess.” Shot after an open casting call for hot mascs (again, what a time to be alive – except for the fascism thing), the video is an andro-queer fever dream. ER Fightmaster! Towa Bird and Muna’s Naomi McPherson proving they’re not the same person! Cara Delevigne, for some reason! Wait, is Cara masc? Like she’s got top energy, but masc? Perhaps she just magically appears whenever four or more lesbians are in a room together.

I’ve heard a little chatter criticizing the lack of body diversity and other kinds of diversity among those chosen. But still, for us old timers, I mentioned it still sometimes feels like a dream to have this much overt queerness celebrated, considered cool and lusted after in public, right?

Also, you have to tip the old beanie to Lucy for making the entire video for her ode to the love she has for her bandmate and bestie Julien Baker into the hottest masc thirst trap ever. Also, “You are my best guess at the future” is such a stunning line. Bring on the hot introverted writer lady thirst trap videos next. You know, just a suggestion.

Portrait of Gay Lady on Fire

OK, but who is going to make this movie? It’s high-art “Mannequin” with a sapphic twist. Someone, anyone – I am begging you to make this movie! Boygenius star Lucy Dacus has announced her new solo album and its first single, “Ankles,” is out now. In addition to a great song about queer lust (hello, “pull me by the ankles to the edge of the bed), it’s also a great fantasy riff on “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” with Lucy as an escaped museum painting and “Bottoms” star Havana Rose Liu as her watchful, worried security guard. Yeah, I could watch 90-minutes plus of this dynamic no problem. So, who’s got some time and a camera and a really big dress?

Vacation Vixen: Joni’s Gay Mafia

Like, can you imagine the combined queer energy in that room? Brandi Carlile, Elton John, Chappell Roan and Lucy Dacus? Gay Mafia, indeed.

Gender Fuck Thursday: boygrammys Edition

I know I’ve talked a lot about the Grammys this week. But, truly, how amazing would it be as a little baby gay to see boygenius and their adorable little suits and their amazing big wins at the Grammys to culminate a frankly magical queer year. And they got to snuggle with Taylor Swift! Heck, they look like her prom dates. Seriously, who cares who wins the Super Bowl this Sunday. Boygenius already won the Life Bowl. Seeing all the queer winners this year is a reminder that representation always matters. And, if you’re going to represent, may I also remind everyone that queers look fucking fabulous in suits always.

Gender Fuck Thursday: boygenius everything

I can’t imagine how exciting this all would feel if I were still a 20something dyke trying to figure her shit out. As is I’m a middle-aged dyke still trying to figure her shit out – and I definitely finds it all a little exciting. Truly, I think you don’t even need to be a boygenius fan to be excited about the ride the indie supergroup has been on of late. And you definitely don’t have to be a fan so sad, sensitive lesbian music to care. You just gotta be impressed by how these queer artists have come this year. Cover of Rolling Stone. Cover British GQ’s Man of the Year issue. SNL musical guests/Troye Sivan impersonators. They’re everywhere. They’re everywhere and so gay together. They’re gay and everywhere. Look, the queer lady Beatles are getting youths to sing "kill the bourgeoisie!" How can you not be excited? I’ve never wanted to be a rock star. But when I see boygenius, I suddenly understand the inclination a little more. Also, I just LOVE their suit game. And their backing band’s suit game! And really everything about all of this. Did I mention I’m excited?

Vacation Vixen: Lucy & Julien in Pete & Ariana Drag

In honor of Gender Fuck Thursday and Halloween, here is possibly the most mind-bogglingly great celebrity costume from this year’s festivities. Yes, that’s boygenius’s very own Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker as Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande. Yes, I repeat, that’s Lucy as Pete and Julien as Ariana. That’s JULIEN AS ARIANA. That kaboom you heard was lesbians’ brains everywhere exploding from the deliciously gender queer fuckery of it all. The gays remain undefeated this Halloween, as always.

My Weekend Crush

Fine, omg, I’m a freaking lesbian cliché. I love Boygenius and their sad, sensitive lesbian music. I spent all last Sunday gardening in the beautiful sunshine to their new album “The Record.” And I am now a complete mess/emotionally exhausted and also completely hooked. OK, I get it, Youths. You were right. The supergroup of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus are amazing together.

Yes, they sing about being 27. But something about the crystalline emotions of our younger selves continues to resonate through the ages. Nothing stings like the first heartbreak, but every heartbreak will always hurt anew like the first time somehow. If you’re a gal who loves the lyrics like me, shit, you’re going to awaken so many ghosts, old and new, to gently haunt your heart.

Like, have you ever wept while pulling weeds and listening to the aching specificity of “Cool About It?” Because I have. And have you longed for the chance to be devastated by the same soul through space and time and rebirth like “We’re In Love?” That sure hits different while potting your tomatoes for the season.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve listened less to music. Mostly, honestly, I listen in the car. But sometimes, like last weekend, I remember how it feels to immerse myself and let the sonic feelings just wash over me again. I haven’t stopped listening all week. Maybe you’ll like a sensory dip into the girl geniuses of Boygenius too, if you haven’t already. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. Also Kristen Stewart directed this and the film (and three music videos) for “The Record” in case you needed even MORE lesbo street cred.

Music Monday: Boygenius Edition

Please enjoy this entirely lesbian sentence: Queer indie supergroup boygenius has tapped Kristen Stewart to direct its upcoming music videos. That’s, like, so gay, dude. But before that happens, please enjoy this video for “Not Strong Enough” shot by boygenius themselves — Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. So if you’re into watching three very talented young queer white women having a fun road trip together, please enjoy. Though, I have no comment on their respective batting stances. Also, don’t worry, when the K-Stew directed video drops, I’ll let you know. Happy Monday, kittens.

Follow the Queer Brick Road

That’s right, more “Yellowjackets” adjacent content coming at ya because I promised you a week and want queer female-led media to survive and thrive. Fresh off the lipstick-smudged launch of her new lady relationship, Jasmin Savoy Brown is having a moment. Here the “Yellowjackets” star is in the very gay (like, it’s about finding love at the world’s loneliest Wizard of Oz fan convention) music video for indie queer musician Lucy Dacus, who makes up one-third of queer indie supergroup Boygenius along with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers (who also appears in the music video for some hot witch-on-witch action with “Grey’s” star E.R. Fightmaster). Honestly, we need Alice’s chart at this point to help us keep track of all the queer lady connections in “Night Shift.” But major props to Lucy for making sure she gets to make out with Jasmin in the video. Like, honey, always shoot your shot. If the Ruby Slipper fits, kiss her. Also, damn, could you imagine being able to watch your favorite queer artists make out with each other in music videos when you were growing up? Yeah, what a world, what a world.
