My Weekend Crush

Start the week with Alanis. End the week with Alanis. Honestly, it’s the perfect bookend for this month for me. And, truly, watching Alanis perform with all these other great female artists has been pretty neat. It’s hard to overstate how big Alanis got once this song came out 28 years ago. And it’s lovely now to see her get her due as an important and beloved performerer now all these years later. Plus, goddamn, she still sounds amazing. And why wouldn’t she? She’s Alanis fucking Morissette.

Female artists in the 90s went through mounds and mounds of (told and untold) shit just for having the audacity to be talented female musicians. The recent confirmation of the ingrained mysogny and sexism of rock ‘n’ roll’s gatekeepers like Rolling Stones honcho Jann Wenner and the extremely belated reexamination of the way young female starts like Britney Spears were treated at the height of their fame are a reminder that it’s long been a man’s world. But we’re here to remind them that female artists have always been great. And you oughta know better than to believe otherwise. Happy weekend, all.

Music Monday: Pink & Alanis Edition

Pink and Alanis Morissette? Together on stage? Singing “You Oughta Know”? *SQUEALS IN GEN X LESBIAN* How amazing does Alanis sound? How amazing does Alanis look! And Pink, well, you know she always looks and sounds amazing. Also, if the generations were having a best breakup anthem competition, hands down the Reality Bites Generation would win thanks to Alanis. Still undefeated. Also for no reason in particular, last weekend would have been my fifth wedding anniversary. Anyway, thanks Alanis. Happy Monday, kittens.

Music Monday: Happy Blogiversary To Me

Well, well, well. Seventeen years. Almost old enough to vote. But still too young for a cocktail. America, you weirdo about ages. Anyway, it’s my Blogiversary today. Seventeen years ago I decided, gosh, a blog might be fun to write. I can do that. And here we are. I want to thank everyone, as always, for coming back and reading day after day after week after month after year after years. I always want to thank everyone for your stunningly generous support through My Little Life Implosion and its subsequent Fund.

I won’t lie, things are still tough sometimes. More times than I’d like, obviously. And I am still working my way through my inbox and various thank yous because sometimes a seemingly simple task feels altogether impossible. I’ve always had the “impossible task” I’ve dreaded and procrastinated about throughout my life. During high school it was the AP summer school classes I took to get ahead (basically, it meant I felt guilty all summer long for not studying for the end-of-summer test). Like I was saying, I’m working on it.

Right, so, all that was probably too much information about my life. But I just wanted to again thank you for coming back and reading my takes on pop culture and politics and the universe et al. And, if by chance you feel like tipping your host again this blogiversary, well, I will always be thankful for your generosity in all of its forms. I might not get around to saying thank you explicitly like I should. But know, please, how deeply thankful I am for all of the community, support and warm wishes.

p.s. Did I deliver on my month-long Music Monday 90s theme with some bookend Alanis or what? And Naked Alanis at that. Happy Monday, kittens.

Music Monday: Oughta Edition

Well, as long as we’re in our 90s feels this month, how about THE Angry Breakup Song of the 90s this fine Monday? Why, yes, last weekend did mark six months since My Little Life Implosion. Why do you ask? Happy Monday, kittens.

Music Monday: Alanis Edition

Wow, the 90s really are back. Finally, it’s time for Gen X culture to SHINE. Though, honestly we’d rather just be wearing flannels and writing in our journals. Anyway, Alanis Morissette is Gen X music royalty. But while the Gen X fellas of grunge get remembered, so many talented female artists of the time seem to live on only in the fanzines of our hearts (I mean, not really, they’re still out there being creative and amazing — but not getting the same kind of nostalgic attention as others). Your Alanises. Your Liz Phairs. Your PJ Harveys. Your Lauryn Hills. Your Tori Amoses. Your Fiona Apples. So it’s lovely to see this orchestral performance of “You Oughta Know” (which, I know, is a promotion for “Bridgerton,” I know). Still, as a 90s kid it’s a trip to see this at-the-time scandalous (she said she went down on someone in a theater!!) song performed in such a rarified way. More 90s women rockers getting to show off Gen X’s talents, please. Happy Monday, kittens.

Jagged Little Lesbian

I don't know about you, but I think Alanis Morissette looks less than thrilled that she is being woman-handed by Roma Maffia in this shot. And why is Roma giving her the grandma cheeks treatment? Anyway, images from Alanis' three episode lesbian story arc on Nip/Tuck were released today. Her character, Poppy, plays the love interest for Roma's Dr. Liz Cruz. Maybe she'll be more happy about it after she finishes her coffee.

Isn't it lesbionic? Don't you think...

Singer and sometimes actress Alanis Morissette will fire back up her sapphic urges to guest-star this season on the FX hit Nip/Tuck. The Canadian star will appear in three episodes of the show as a lesbian named Poppy, girlfriend of Dr. Liz Cruz. This isn't Alanis' first foray into lady love on the small screen. She made a brief appearance as Carrie's first same-sex kiss in season three of "Sex and the City." Hmm, so does that mean that she's got one hand in her pocket, and the other is holding a dental dam?
