Girls Trip

Stoner comedies aren’t typically my favorite genre. But stoner comedies directed and starring queer female leads and talking cats? Spark that shit now! Let’s fucking go! I have no idea whether “The Wrong Girls,” starring Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat and written and directed by K-Stew’s wife Dylan Meyer will be any good. But I know I don’t care because, well, did I mention the talking cats? Also Kate McKinnon is also in this thing. We’re all going, just bring plenty of snacks for the munchies.

p.s. Also here is K-Stew working out in a tank top-adjacent attire for this movie in case you needed some Tuesday bona fides.

Doomed Together

Hey, wanna feel doomed with me on a Wednesday but kinda in a good way? I mean, as good as us doomed can feel these days? Well then check out Kate McKinnon and Amy Poehler on Amy’s Good Hang podcast. I’m not really a podcast person, because goodness don’t we yap enough at each other as humans? But I do always enjoy the little clips I get fed by the algorithmic gods of attention from Amy’s interviews. And each interview with Kate makes me appreciate this rare and fascinating creature (homesteader, but again, in a nice way) who gifted us with a peek into her unique mind for 10 years on SNL. Whenever she has reemerged since has been an utter delight. And, if you are one of those I-love-to-watch-a-good-yap people, please enjoy Amy and Kate’s full hour-long yap here. Happy We’re Doomed, Wednesday, kittens!

More Kate By the Minute

If you have 23 minutes to spare, might I suggest you watch Kate McKinnon struggle her way through the hottest wings on the planet. But true to her new agrarian lifestyle, Kate is eating seitan wings, which for some reason are strangely chewy. Like, it’s plants… What is that pull? Anyway, there are worse things you can do with 23 minutes, is all I’m saying. Also, if you have five more minutes, might I suggest you catch Kate talking about luddite farm life, too? Because the world is hard enough right now. Have yourself 28 minutes of joy, I mean Kate McKinnon.

No Bed of Roses

Is watching a straight couple try to destroy each other some kind of reparations for the efforts to overturn marriage equality? Because nice try, but no deal. But I am happy to see renowned homosexuals Kate McKinnon and Ncuti Gatwa appear to be cheerleading their downfall (albeit while perhaps playing straight – whatever, if they can play gay we can play straight). I have no idea whether this reboot of the 1989 black comedy with Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in the roles made famous by Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas will be good. But did I mention Allison Janney is also in this thing? Like, even if it isn’t good, the cumulative number of good actors makes me know it’ll go on a watchlist when it comes to whatever streamer it’s gonna come to. What? I said there was no deal. I ain’t paying for no ticket.

Santa Weirdo

Anyone having holiday anxiety and similarly convinced that they ever actually met The Big Guy they’d also make it weird? Though, as a single gay woman, I think if a strange man in a red suit carrying a sack showed up in my living room in the middle of the night I would probably freak out and do a lot more than make it weird. So I commend fellow gaymos Kate McKinnon and Billie Eilish on keeping it just weird with Santa. Happy Christmas Eve, ya weirdos.

Into the Lesbian Woods

Dear Kate McKinnon,

How do I get your life? Move to the woods? Build cabinets? Write a dang book? Dream of single-sex utopia existence? Like, watching Kate talk about her crush on the local professional cabinetmakers is a peak relatable lesbian experience. Geeking out about some artisan craft and making it our whole personality? How dare you expose the lesbian obsessive personality to the rest of the world like this! How dare you very much! Also writing a book in the woods? How do I get your life? I don’t necessarily want to make my own cabinets, but goodness so I have some thoughts on how to create an ideal backyard landscape. You know, in case you’re getting lonely out there living your best life in the woods and all.

All my best,

Ms. S

Music Monday: Pride Song

Last week of Pride, y’all. Have you danced on a Deutsche Bank float yet? Hope not! See, now hilarious, topical, entirely accurate skits like this are only possibly because queer people were actually part of the process. I will forever be thankful to Kate McKinnon, Bowen Yang and Punkie Johnson making “It’s Pride Again” the Pride banger it was, is and will always be. Happy last Monday of Pride, kittens.

Oscars SGALGG & GGALGG

How about them Oscars? I thought they were…fine. Truly, really fine. There were some nice moments. I enjoyed the past winners introducing each of the acting nominees. I liked Ken. I love love LOVED seeing Jodie Foster and her wife Alexandra Hedison attending their first Oscars together. But first, we start with the Straight Gals Acting Like Gay Gays, per ritual.

Annette Bening, Emma Stone & Lily Gladstone

Best Actress Cuddle Puddle

Regina King & Danielle Brooks

Shooting your shot on the red carpet.

Jamie Lee Curtis & Lupita Nyong'o

I included this photo because omfg Lupita’s back muscles.

Florence Pugh

I included this photo because omfg Flo’s everything.

Kerry Washington & Sandra Oh

If Kerry wanted to become an international assassin who falls in love/obsession with Sandra, I would watch that – but tell them to stay away from boat decks.

Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence & Sally Fields

Emma went May-December on her backstage makeouts.

America Ferrera & Gay Gals

I would watch an alternate universe Barbie where America’s Gloria runs off with Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie.
I would also watch an alternate universe Barbie where America was Barbie and Billie Eilish was Ken.
I would watch America, Lena Waithe and Cynthia Erivo read the phone book, among other things.

And the Best Lesbian Oscars Photo Goes To

Jodie and her wife Alexandra and Brandi Carlile & her wife Catherine Shepherd together at the Oscars after parties. Sometimes, it really does get better.

Lesbian Mayonnaise

As someone who still dabbles in pop culture commentary despite all too often feeling like a relic from the paleolithic era, I find the current trend of celebrity spokes-everything to be rather revealing. Today’s A, B, C, D and really every other letter of the alphabet celebrities (if you play any phone app games, you will be well familiar with those “every other letter” celebs from their incessant in-app ads…) are more than happy to hawk just about anything. Weird cell phone games, crypto, online betting, cell phone plans, cars, pharmaceuticals, coffee and, yes, mayonnaise. I have absolutely no quarrel with Kate McKinnon schilling for Hellmans (we call it Best Foods here on the West/Best Coast, thank you very much) in this upcoming Super Bowl ad. Plus, this ad is actually funny and helps perpetuate Lesbian Cat Lady stereotypes which I approve/relate to very much.

But in the 20 years since “Lost in Translation” was released, the entire premise of the movie has been eradicated from our popular culture. Big celebs used to think it was slumming to do commercials. There was a whole cottage industry of the biggest celebs going overseas so their selling out couldn’t be seen by American audiences. Sure, maybe they’d take a perfume ad around the holidays or some luxury brand endorsement. But to show up in ads for sandwich condiments and instant coffee and car insurance? Heck there are even celebrity cameos in celebrity commercials (hello, Pete Davidson.) In the end, capitalism seems to always win. But at least the cat is cute.

Music Monday: ABBA-solutely Hilarious

OK, OK. One last guaranteed mood lifter from this past holiday season. Truly, if you don’t at very least giggle at Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Bowen Yang trying not to break while singing ABBA into each other’s faces you may need to seek medical help. Also, this album is a great option for belated Christmas gifts for those mothers and/or their gay sons you forgot about in December. Happy Monday, kittens.

Purrfect Pairing

You know what else helps those January Doldrums? Gay Cat Ladies, duh. In case you missed it amid the holiday hustle and bustle, here is Kate McKinnon and Billie Eilish as the latest Whiskers R We cat rescue workers/long-lost mother-daughter. And, obviously, the apple and fashion sense and sexual orientation doesn’t fall far from the tree. Favorite Outfit: Embroidered floral T-shirts! Favorite movie: “Tar” starring Lydia Tar! Celeb Crush: Mariska Hargitay! Yep, they’re Mother-Daughter Gay…played by actual gays. You love to see it.

Home on the Farm

Look, I knew Kate McKinnon returning to SNL for the first time to host would be good. I did not expect it would be Lesbian Tampon Farmers good. But how can you resist when it brings us Kate McEthridge (see what I did there?) together with Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Billie Eilish as fellow tampon farmers (also I see you, Paula Pell, getting in on the lesbian jokes). From the acoustic guitars to the muscle shirts, it’s a gay folk singer chef’s kiss. Kate’s SNL was also the queer female comic equivalent of those get you a gal who can do both memes. From Crunchy Granola Dyke to Marlene Dietrich stan. What can’t Kate do?

Mental Health Minx: Kate McKinnon

Honestly, what’s so weird about convincing other women to wear Birkenstocks? Nothing at all, I say. Nothing at all.

My Weekend (Pink) Crush

Honestly, I haven’t stopped thinking about the Barbie movie since I saw it on Sunday. What a glittery hot pink Trojan horse of a movie that promises the shiny plastic fun of childhood playtime (and delivers, thanks to its lovingly immaculate attention to detail) while also unpacking the social significance of the most famous doll in the world as she relates to our concepts of womanhood in our society. You know, girlie stuff.

I don’t know exactly what I expected with the news that Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were going to make a Barbie movie. I’m not sure if anyone did. But what we got was a day-glo dance party wrapped in an existential crisis tied up with a bow of cultural awakening that came with a lovely card filled with generational healing. Again, girlie stuff.

Of course, the Right Wing nutters are against it because it’s not just about how pretty a perpetually tip-toed plaything with physically impossible proportions is. Yes, conservatives, Barbie has fallen to the Woke! Mind! Virus! (Just, lol forever at whatever GOP think tank thought that’d sound super scary). Any mention of the dreaded F-word, feminism, and P-word, patriarchy, makes them want to buy another assault rifle and ban abortion even harder. You know, MAGA stuff.

But for the rest of us, Barbie will make us laugh and feel and think and believe all in the pursuit of pure female joy and empathy. And unlike more overtly serious-minded films (again, it’s so weird to say this, but not that the Barbie movie isn’t serious-minded at times), this film swaddles its most cerebral arguments in the warm embrace of emotional resonance. In short, this movie has a whole lot of women in their feelings.

Its most clever trick is to lure us in with the nostalgia while critiquing what that same nostalgia has meant to us over the course of our lives. How since her creation in 1959, this hunk of shapely hardened fossil fuels has affected our everyday existence as women. We are all just America Ferreras trying to be liked by a world that makes that impossible by design.

Granted most women probably don’t go through their days critically examining those F- and P-words as they relate to their jobs and families and relationships. But they sure intrinsically know that they do, and the Barbie movie has connected to that core universality. Yes, we’re all different races and cultures and body types and sexual orientations and socio-economic statuses. But we all also never forget the it’s the men (particularly straight white men) who still run this world.

One of the funnier aspects of the backlash to the movie (well, not so much in a ha ha kind of way, but a not so funny when the roles are reversed kinda way) is how the manosphere keeps whining about how “man-hating” Barbie is. In the beginning, Kens are treated essentially like women have been since time in memoriam in the movies and real life, but without any of the constant threats of violence or expected domestic servitude. Men are just funny little guys who are kept around as, well, arm candy but are not otherwise central to the narrative. They are accessories. I know men understand this because they saw and loved Margot Robbie in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” (It should be noted that Martin Scorsese hasn’t directed a female-led film since the 1970s, ahem.)

With each film, Greta Gerwig has shown off and honed her innate understanding of the constant push/pull of womanhood. I know, I know, her catalog so far has centered largely white (and straight) women’s stories. But, look, it took Christopher Nolan 22 years of directing features before he cast his first Black lead — who was of course still male — and he has still only done it once. Yet no one really makes a fuss about that so, you know, context. (To be clear, both should be more inclusive in their storytelling. Everyone should.) And, to her credit, Barbie is represented onscreen as a seemingly endless array of womanhood, including a trans Barbie which is nothing short of amazing.

The Barbie movie is also proof that women’s stories have always been so much more than just romantic love stories, or at least love stories in their traditional sense. Yeah, this is a chick flick but it sure ain’t no rom-com. It’s the reinterpretation of a chick flick, which examines gender roles and the dynamics that put us into boxes from the moment the doctor exclaims, “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” Those confines hurt women and men and everyone. Period.

Granted those Gay Barbie rumors (SPOILER ALERT, but deep down you already knew) never materialize in the movie. Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie (I mean, the Birkenstocks alone) and Michael Cera’s Allan are heavily queer and/or nonbinary coded. (Speaking of gay, I hope the Indigo Girls made a mountain of royalties for the use of “Closer to Fine.) But, all satirical consumerism joking aside, it’s still freaking Mattel.

My greatest hope for the Barbie movie is that it allows more women to tell truly all types of stories about themselves. Because, hot damn, we are good at this shit — we really, really are. Though I fear that instead of letting us tell our own stories, Hollywood is going to decide to make more movies about toys and other plastic crap. Which, sadly, they already are. Deep endless sigh.

Still the wrongheaded lessons being learned can’t erase its accomplishments. Biggest opening for a female-directed movie, ever. Biggest movie opening of the year, period. Bigger than “Mission Impossible 7,” bigger than “Indiana Jones 5,” and even bigger than “Top Gun 2” (Also, try something original you absolute greedy dolts). Barbie was made for us and we made it big. That is much more than Kenough.

So go grab your best hot pink apparel, and don’t be ashamed of the joy and, yes, catharsis you feel while watching a movie about a 64-year-old doll who has become a generational icon and cultural lightning rod. This is the kind of girlie stuff that should resonate with anyone with an open heart and mind. Come on Barbie, let’s go to a patriarchy smashing party. Happy weekend, all.

What a Doll

Fine, OK. I had a Barbie. One. I had ONE Barbie. And one Ken – the kind eternally in the swim trunks. But I was always more of an action figure girlie and/or “tomboy” as they called us back then or future gay as I call my past self now. So, I didn’t really know what to expect from the Barbie movie. I knew I liked Greta Gerwig’s work. And I knew the cast was ridiculously stacked. And I knew it would be some kind of send-up.

But “Closer to Fine,” Crazy Seer Lesbian Barbie Kate McKinnon, and Birkenstocks? Yeah, more like, “Portrait of Plastic Lady on Fire” – >amirite? But, seriously, this looks all sorts of fun and funny and feminist (I mean, the bad guys are literally trying to keep a woman in a box! They’re practically Republican congressmen!) Come on, Barbie, let’s go to the movies.

My Weekend (Just Friends) Crush

Hey, so last week was Lesbian Visibility Week or something. How did it take me 17 years to realize I launched my blog at the start of Lesbian Visibility Week? Maybe because we aren’t visible enough and history will just keep on calling us Very Close Friends? Anyway, to all the Gal Pals who lived through the 90s, this one is for you. What can’t pairs of friends like these do? [H/T, Kate Terry for the retro “roommates” SNL clip] Happy weekend, all.

My Weekend Crush

Well, there goes my reason for watching any “Saturday Night Live” in the first place. After a decade (yes, a whole damn DECADE) on SNL, Kate McKinnon has left the building. Last weekend was her last rodeo. While we all know the live sketch comedy show is hit-and-many-misses funny these days, there’s never been any question about Kate. She has carried the series on her unendingly talented back — as both its backbone and moral conscience at times — for the past 10 years. (Yeah, make fun of it all you will, but the Hillary Hallelujah touched something deep in all of us who were stupidly blindsided by her loss and thought a better country was possible. And that was even before shit got truly dire.)

Kate is also a source of personal pride for many a queer woman who watched her rise up from the humble pages of that formerly smart queer women’s website that was named after that other lesbian celebrity who just happens to be ending her show this week (and who Kate just happens to be really good at impersonating). Remember her on the vlogs? Oh, we were all so young then. So young and so gay.

But Kate was truly great right out of the gates. On her very, very first show she gave us this absolute gem. Honestly, this and Lucy Lawless skit where she plays Stevie Nicks making a commercial for her fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain are two of my all-time favorites. I mean, this was her first show and she was already this funny.

The season finale was also the last show for Aidy Bryant, another decade-long veteran, who is also great on her own right (have you watched “Shrill?”) and wonderful as a comedy partner to Kate. (Also, the guy who is dating Kim Kardashian left too or whatever.) I believe Kate and Aidy are the perfect comedy work wives. And while they have many, many memorable sketches together, the one where they got Gal Gadot to kiss Kate is truly an all-time classic. First, manifest your own dreams, gay comedy writers, and second, yeah she got to kiss Wonder Woman. Perfect. No notes.

Honestly, it’s fitting Kate and Aidy left together. Now they can finally work on their soon-to-be hit crime drama “Dyke & Fats.”

And they saved Christmas!

Best of luck, Kate and Aidy. Thank you for all the super duper, duper super gay laughs. Happy weekend, all.

In a Barbie World

Dammit, I’m going to have to watch the damn Barbie movie now, aren’t I? Kate McKinnon is joining the new movie about the world’s most famous plastic doll. But she’s not playing Barbie, instead perhaps she is Barbie’s friend Lesbian Skipper?) The movie already boasts Margot Robbie (Barbie), Ryan Gosling (Ken), America Ferrera (Barbie’s Latina friend?) and Simu Liu (her Asian friend?) in the new movie. The movie also has an impressive pedigree behind the camera with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing the script (and her directing). I don’t know if Barbie deserves this much accumulated talent. But I can only hope they make it gay. I mean, Barbie canonically has done some pretty gay shit, y’all.

Is This A Joke?

You know when something makes you say, “Is this real life?” But, uh, not necessarily in a good way. Well the trailer for the new limited Peacock series “Joe v. Carole” made me do just that last weekend when it debuted. Like, this is an SNL skit, right? RIght?

Wait, I’m getting some new information. *holds finger to imaginary earpiece* Sorry, so sorry, I can in fact confirm this is real. Repeat, this is a real thing in the world that is really happening. Ok then.

Now, like every other locked down idiot at the start of the pandemic, I binged “Tiger King.” It was a stupid, trashy balm for a chaotic, fightening time. But with time it became less fun and just more grotesque. Like, people died. And big cats became the ultimate victim of these people’s endlessly destructive striving for fame, glory and capitalism.

But, dammit, if the cast isn’t sort of amazing. Kate freaking McKinnon? John Cameron Mitchell? And Kyle MacLachlan? That makes me think it might be kind of good? Or at least interesting? Perhaps campy even? I am pulling for campy hard because otherwise *oooof*.

Lesbian Night Live

Out Golden Globe winner and Tony nominated star Ariana DeBose came onto “Saturday Night Live” this weekend and queered up the place. Like her and out SNL star Kate McKinnon truly gayed up the joint. I haven’t seen “West Side Story” yet (which recently won her the Globe for portraying Anita). But I did see her as one half of the lesbian couple in the film adaptation of “The Prom.” So, you know, lesbo street cred signed and notarized.

But, I realized while watching her queer things up with Kate in the monologue and later a “Sappho” sketch, how rare it still is to see two actually lesbian or queer actresses play lesbian or queer characters together. Another more recent welcome exception to the rule is watching Cynthia Nixon and Sara Ramirez gay it up together on “And Just Like That…”

Something about that little, seemingly improvised fist-pump that these two out queer women shared as Ariana sang “Pretty and witty and gayyyy,” felt like a joyful celebration of our queer lady selves. And then, later in the show, the “Sappho” sketch hit on so many community specific in-jokes. Indeed, what made it so funny is it wasn’t that lesbians were the butt of the joke, but that the relatable relationship foibles of lesbian relationships were universally funny. It’s that whole laughing at or with you thing, and we were all definitely laughing together.
