Going to Bat

Wait, has the CW been reading my dream journals? Because Rachel Maddow is going to have a role in the network’s new lesbian superhero series “Batwoman.” This is like that meme where you smoosh Ruby Rose and Rachel Maddow together and yell, “NOW KISS!”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the MSNBC host will playVesper Fairchild, from the Batman comics. Her role is described as such:

“Fairchild is a television and radio personality who had a romantic relationship with Bruce Wayne (Batman). The Batwoman catch is that Maddow's Fairchild will never appear onscreen — at least there are no current plans for her to do so. Still, Maddow is expected to "appear" in multiple episodes.”

Fine, that significant reduces the possibility of them kissing. But still! It’s very cool and it turns out Rachel is definitely a Batwoman fan. In 2010 she wrote an introduction for the deluxe hardcover edition of writer Greg Ruck’s Batwoman graphic novel “Elegy.”

For her part, Rachel commented on the news via Twitter saying:

“I know no one's going to believe this is true, but it's true. I'm "Vesper Fairchild" in the new Batwoman TV show that starts this Sunday night on The CW. (My character is soooo not me; turns out playing her is one of the most fun things I've ever done).”

The series debuted on Sunday and is off to a strong, and very gay, start. And if you listened closely you no doubt heard Rachel as Vesper, the uncredited voice of the city. And *spoiler alert* I totally called that twist with Alice. Plus, I do not trust The Crows because militia in body armor with big guns are never the answer.

So that’s Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten and Rachel Maddow all in one series? Now that’s what I call a truly R-Rated Lesbian Lust Squad - because of the Rs in their name and, you know, other reasons.

Fetch Us Our Axes

Fetch us our axe, we’ve all got grinding to do. Look, these are extraordinarily shitty times (To recap: Muslim ban, children in cages, trans military ban, unprecedented corporate tax cuts, eroding LGBTQ civil liberties, vanishing abortion access for all and bodily autonomy for all people with uteruses, lifetime appointments for unqualified and unhinged federal judges, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, willfully ignoring the looming extinction-level threat of climate change, et al). So we need to take extraordinarily aggressive counteraction. And while I’m not saying we should all take up and axe and smash the patriarchy, literally. But figuratively? Get it ladies. Unleash your Inner Joan Crawford. (Or Inner Buffy, or Inner Johanna, or Inner Tahani, Or Inner Emma Watson, Or Inner Rosario Dawson, Inner Tam-Tam, Inner Walmart Lady, Inner Menstrual Tina Fey, et al.) We’ve got some major chopping to do.

I mean, as Det. Rosa Diaz was saying.

p.s. p.s. Just a reminder, this is my personal blog which I have been writing daily for 13 years without any kind of financial compensation and I in turn provide entirely free to anyone who cares to stop and read without any advertising or other commercial distractions. As such, I say whatever the fuck I want whenever the fuck I want. So if any so-called progressive lesbians want to defend conservatism in the United States here, you are more than welcome to stop reading and leave. Because I will never, ever condone the kind of greedy, small-minded, hate-filled and me-at-all-costs thinking that the G.O.P. and conservatism stands for today.

My Weekend Crush

Yep, I am gayly watching the hell out of this. So now that we have a trailer for the new “Batwoman” series on The CW. And it’s...good. It’s pretty darn good. Also gay. So very gay. Like, have we ever seen such a kickass out butch heroine leading a show? Despite all the initial misgivings about Ruby Rose’s acting abilities, her physicality is unquestionably great here (and, well, that swagger ain’t bad either).

But what makes me most encouraged is the female pedigree behind the new show. “Vampire Diaries” alum Caroline Dries serves as showrunner. And one it writers is none other than Natalie Abrams (former TV journalist turned TV writer), who happens to be the wife of former AfterEllen (in the good old days) writer Snoodit. It’s a small (and super gay) world after all.

So, bring it Batwoman. I’m 100 percent here for an awesome, hilarious, handsome butch badass who does not let a man take credit for a woman’s work. Happy Batwoman weekend, all.

p.s. So very very (very, very, very) nice to see you, Rachel Skarsten/Alice/Tamsin.

p.p.s. I also super relieved that it looks like Kate Kane’s love interest won’t be fridged in the first episode, but rescued by our Bat shero instead. (I hope, don’t let me down, show…)

Bats of Prey

Well, this is some deliciously gay chocolate-and-peanut butter casting. You know, two gay things that are even gayer together. Folks excited about the new, standalone “Batwoman” series on the CW have one more reason to squeal. First, they cast Ruby Rose as literal social justice warrior Kate Kane/Batwoman. And now they have cast Rachel Skarsten as her lead supervillain, Alice.

According to Deadline, Alice’s character is Batwoman’s Joker and the leader of her so-called Wonderland Gang. She is described as, “Swinging unpredictably between maniacal and charming, Alice has made it her mission to undermine Gotham’s sense of security.”

You may remember Rachel from all your hot, steamy Valkubus daydreams. Or, you know, her role as the badass bisexual valkyrie Tamsin on “Lost Girl.”

The addition is a particularly nice touch because Rachel got one of her first big breaks playing Dinah Lance/The Black Canary on “Birds of Prey.” The series aired on the CW for one season from 2002 to 2003.

Look, I don’t want to mean here, but is it OK to root for the villain just this once? Go get’em, Tam-Tam Alice.

Tank Top Tuesday

So it has been undeniably strange watching “The 100” warrior leader play the “Fear the Walking Dead” sullen teen. But Alycia Debnam-Carey has done admirably in both. Though I can’t help but think with a little more eye paint Lexa could kick all those zombies’ butts no problem. So in honor of some other great transformations, here are some more great ladies in tank tops.

Alycia Debnam-Carey

Still needs more eyeliner – and weaponry.

Shannyn Sossamon

You may only remember her as the asymmetrical chunky pixie cut girl from all those early 2000s movie. But I, for one, am super excited to see her as the big bad on this season of “Sleepy Hollow.”

Angela Bassett

She is supposed to hook-up with Lady Gaga on “American Horror Story: Hotel” this season. Like you aren’t watching just for that, too.

Ashlyn Harris

To most of America she is Hope Solo’s back-up. To lesbians she is half of Krashlyn.

Michelle Rodriguez

I would have never guessed she would become the girl who loves to post Instagram pictures of herself in sparkly ball gowns and on fancy yachts in Ibiza. But, hey, at least she still also looks great in a tank top.

Rachel Skarsten

Turning Tamsin into a lovesick teenager AND a sexual assault victim in one season? Wow, show, wow.

Once Upon a Tam-Tam

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed this week’s Tamsin-centric episode. I mean, confusing Valkyrie lifeline chronology aside, I think it was a welcome showcase for Rachel Skarsten who has been a perfect fit in the “Lost Girl” universe from the start. Of course, it also made me a little sad (no, not for the Team Valkubus vs. Team Doccubus stuff, I have zero interest in that). No, it made me sad because this far into the final season of “Lost Girl” an episode like this is clearly meant to be last, and deserved, hurrah for Tamsin’s character. While you never know what kind of wacky things the writers will do (and, please, don’t tell me – no fae-ing spoilers), you have to guess they won’t spend another whole episode dedicated to Tam-Tam. I mean, they only five episodes total left to wrap this succu-puppy up. But it was a nice gesture to give our Valkyrie her due. She has added so much to the show – dance skills not withstanding.

Oh, and you can read my full recap of Episode 5.11 “Sweet Valkyrie High” over at AfterEllen today.

p.s. That clip also made me miss Bruce. And, as always, Kenzi.

Things That Make You Go Squeee

New trailer! New trailer! NEW TRAILER! Yes, I realize we’re going to start getting a lot more of these as Sept. 6 steamrolls our way. But while they still feel fresh and new here is what I have to say about this one.

1) I’ll never be tired of seeing Kenzi again. Mark, not so much.

2) Hey, look, Tamsin is alive. And so is Linda Hamilton/Acacia.

3) Each time I see him he adds such a weird, yet also welcome B-movie vibe. I can’t explain it, really.

4) *unintelligible squealing sounds*

Some thoughts? That is, if you can do more than squeal.

Reign Over Me

So I don’t watch “Reign.” I’ve never watched “Reign.” I also didn’t watch “The Tudors” either. Basically I’m not huge on those kinds of period dramas, unless there are like dragons or Khaleesi or both. But now I’m torn because Rachel Skarsten has been cast as a series regular, her first post-“Lost Girl” job. And, she’ll be playing Queen Elizabeth I on the (very loosely) historical drama about young Mary, Queen of Scots. Right, that’s a pretty cool role.

Also, the series stars Megan Follows as Catherine de’ Medici, which is another pretty cool role. And my enduring love for Anne with an E makes me inclined to watch anything she does.

Also, current series regular Caitlin Stasey, who plays lady-in-waiting Kenna, has come out proudly as bisexual.

Also, the series appears to have some pretty sexually fluid characters.

So, you know, that’s a lot of alsos. So my only question now is what’s holding me back? Thoughts? Is it worth it, kittens?

p.s. It’s great to see our “Lost Girl” ladies finding post Fae-world work. Rachel with “Reign.” Zoie Palmer with “Dark Matters.” Ksenia Solo with “Orphan Black” and “Turn.” Now we anxiously await to see what Anna Silk does next.

Laugh Girls

Hey, America. Better late than never, eh? So Syfy FINALLY announced the start of “Lost Girl” Season 5 here in the states. Damn, network, why you gotta make a gal wait like that. They’ll start airing the first eight episodes of the fifth and final season April 12 on Syfy. Of course our Canadian friends – and those of us who like to pretend we’re Canadian – started watching last Decmeber and have been waiting patiently for more since the end of January. No word on when the second half will air, either in the U.S. or Canada. Way back when the first season was announced they said it would air in “Fall 2015,” so I’m guessing October or November. *harumpf sound* But, hey, this is still good news for everyone here who likes to watch things old (and legal) school. Ahem. I think I might have to rewatch, because just watching that video of these crazy kids being crazy makes me all nostalgic. Come back, Lost Girls (and a few of the guys), come back.

Plot Points

My continued apologies for the tardy postings. I am in the midst of recapping two shows and working my full time job and trying to be a somewhat social human being this holiday season. So something has to bah humbug, and that is timely blog posts. But, fear not. Only one more (sniffle) The Fall recap this season and then I will just be down to normal busy instead of ughwhatmakeitstop busy. Until then, please enjoy these screencaps from the last Lost Girl recap. I swear, sometimes I have no fucking idea what these writers are doing, but damn if it doesn't look pretty.

Last Picture Show

If I was a body language expert (which, as lesbian, I clearly am after years and years and years of trying to figure out what that cute lesbian across the room who you were too afraid to approach and talk to was really thinking), I would have a lot to say about the new “Lost Girl” promo pictures. I would particularly have a lot to say about the new “Lost Girl” duo promo pictures. First, the pictures.

Bo & Lauren:

Bo & Tamsin:

Bo & Dyson:

Dyson & Lauren:

I call them, respectively, Love, Longing, Get Lost and Let’s Go Pound Some Brews & Talk About Chicks, Bro.

The snuggling of the Bo & Lauren picture cannot (and will not) be ignored. This is particularly noteworthy given that the fifth season preview showed a Bo & Dyson snog, but choked on Bo & Lauren – quite literally. But this, this snuggle will not be denied.

It seems so surreal that the final season of this show will be starting soon. And these will be the very last promo pictures from this series we get to see. While I still haven’t made my peace with the end, but I am very excited for start. And, of course, you can expect my recaps over at AfterEllen will follow.

p.s. You can also check out a little more about the promo pictures and posters released for Season 5 on AfterEllen today.

My Weekend Hug

Oh, man. Am I slacking on my posts or what? But, just before the weekend ends, how about a hug? And, a quick reminder, you can read my Lost Girl recaps every Wednesday (or so) on AfterEllen.

Tank Top Tuesday: Lost Girl Edition

Happy “Lost Girl” recaps are back day! Well, happy hopefully for you. Sleep deprived for me. But in a good way, a very good way. So what better way to celebrate than with tank tops! So many tank tops. “Lost Girl” is back. The ladies of “Lost Girl” are back! The Boobs O’Clock of the ladies of “Lost Girl” are back! Life doesn’t succubus suck.

Anna Silk

Does she need a gun, wherever she is?

Emmanuelle Vaugier

More Morrigan this season. MOAR!

Ksenia Solo

So many Kenzism, so little time.

Rachel Skarsten

I bet she is just dealing with the insurance claim from her wrecked truck. Yeah, that’s what she is doing.

Zoie Palmer

Melting lesbians’ ice creams since 1977. Though, gurl, that hair.

p.s. Pop over to AfterEllen later today to check out my latest recap.

On Faith & Fandom

I am not a religious person. I have never gone to church regularly. My father was a scientist and my first paying job was collecting data in his lab. So I tend to look at deeply religious people with a mix of bemusement, skepticism and wariness. I do not fully understand their faith.

But, here’s the thing, I also believe people are entitled to feel their religious beliefs as deeply as they want. Just as I am free to not believe, they are free to believe. I do not have to agree with their beliefs. But as long as they don’t actively condemn me for my non-belief, I will not actively condemn them for their beliefs. Sure, we can try to change minds, but in the end if we cannot – well – live and let live.

I also do not believe everyone who belongs to a church whose doctrine includes anti-gay rhetoric is themselves anti-gay. Certainly, I wish they’d consider their denomination’s dogma and examine whether it follows their true feelings. But I don’t think all Catholics or Mormons or Scientologists or Southern Baptists are necessarily homophobes even though their religions have been overwhelmingly unsupportive of LGBT people and our rights. The irony of my love the sinner, not the sin approach to deeply religious people is not lost on me.

Which leads me to the recent heated fandom debates – to put it very mildly; you should see the email folder I’ve made for all the messages – over Rachel Skarsten of “Lost Girl” and most recently Laura Prepon of “Orange Is the New Black.” Both have been tied to churches that are reportedly anti-gay. For Rachel it is the Los Angeles church Mosaic and its pastor Erwin McManus. And for Laura it is Scientology and the speculation it had something to do with leaving her show.

McManus is on record seven years ago giving an all-too-familiar kind of soft-focus anti-gay sermon about how “I don’t believe you are in a healthy place when your identity is built around who you have sex with” and other such nonsense that’ll make you grind your teeth. You can download a full podcast of his October 2006 sermon “Life’s Toughest Questions” on iTunes for free. As for Scientology, high-profile claims of homophobia in the church and from its late founder L. Ron Hubbard have been around for ages. You can get trapped in that Google search rabbit hole for days.

I am, admittedly and obviously, not really a fan of either church or leader. And that is being incredibly gracious about my opinion.

But I will also be completely honest and say that I do not indisputably know either women’s level of involvement in their respective churches. I think most people don’t know for certain. Rachel has tweeted about being at Mosaic and has also mentioned a short film she worked on with McManus in a May interview with the blog No White Noise. Laura has said in a 2007 Women’s Health magazine interview that she is a Scientologist, though it’s not totally clear if she’s still involved with the church.

But here is what we do know. Both actresses, regardless of their religions, have signed on to play overtly lesbian or bisexual roles on television shows with overtly lesbian and bisexual content. These are not shows that stumbled upon their LGBT content during sweeps week. These are shows that wore it proudly from the start. Hell, we saw hot lesbian shower action in the first 10 seconds on OITNB. Both women have promoted their shows, championed their stories and given interviews with the LGBT press, including exclusive interview by both Rachel and Laura with us big-time lezzers at AfterEllen.

Earlier this month Laura said in an interview with Canada.com:
I’m a supporter of the gay and lesbian community. I have friends who are lesbian, I have friends who are gay. It’s all about the character. Yes there are a lot of lesbians on this show. Besides the L Word there aren’t lesbians portrayed like this on television. For me, I’ve never played a lesbian before and I think it’s awesome. As a learning experience playing this love for someone on camera and having it be a women was very interesting because I’m straight and I’ve only done it with men on camera. There is a big gay and lesbian community out there and it’s good to have more relationships on television that they can relate to and I’m glad we could be a part of that.
And a week ago Rachel tweeted:

Does this absolve them of their church’s beliefs? No. And I truly hope each person who believes differently from her religion would work to change its discriminatory practices. So, yes, I am disappointed in both to a degree. And you are perfectly entitled to feel disappointed and upset. But just as we in the LGBT community do not want to be prejudged as a whole, I will not prejudge their hearts. Prove to me you are not worth my tolerance.

I choose not to eat at Chik-fil-A because its CEO has made it perfectly clear that he thinks same-sex marriage will destroy families and the company has donated millions to anti-gay groups working against our rights. I choose not to shop at Hobby Lobby because the company is suing the government to not have to provide health care coverage for contraceptives, and because each July 4 since 2008 they’ve run full-page newspaper ads espousing the need for religion in the government (this year’s included pointed condemnation of Supreme Court judges as a result of the DOMA and Prop. 8 decisions). I choose not to see “Ender’s Game” because its writer Orson Scott Card actively supported an aggressively anti-gay agenda for years including his self-penned belief that marriage equality “marks the end of democracy in America,” and also sounds more than a little accidentally racist. Not that being accidentally racist is a thing, Brad Paisley.

And I choose to laugh my ass off at that decrepit relic of bigotry Pat Robertson because, you know, how could you not.

I make these choices because I believe in their core these people/organizations wish gay people ill will. They would rather we not exist altogether, but if we must exist be seen as unnatural, unworthy things.

Now, some folks may be very upset at my refusal to condemn either Rachel or Laura off hand. You are mad that they went to those churches in the first place. You are mad that they talked about their religions at all. I can see where you’re coming from. Though it should be noted that Rachel was specifically asked what projects she was working on besides “Lost Girl” in the interview in question. And so she answered accordingly.

Thing is, when we start telling people what they can and cannot say about something that matters in their lives, then how different are we than the people who tell us what we can or cannot say about ourselves? The people who tell us to keep our lives quiet and stop being so blatant and other words synonymous for “couldn’t you please just be invisible.”

I will not be invisible. But I will also not force other people to be. And if we truly are in a battle for the hearts and minds for those people and organizations that do not accept us, we will need people on our side on the inside. We need LGBT friendly Catholics and Mormons and Scientologists and Southern Baptists and everything in between. We cannot do it alone. We need allies everywhere.

Calling someone a homophobe is a powerful thing not to be taken lightly. A homophobe hates us. A homophobe fears us. A homophobe fights against us in words or actions. A homophobe thinks we truly are an abomination and wants us to be treated as such.

Certainly, one could argue that simply being a part of or participating in a church that feels we are not totally equal is in itself is an act of homophobia. It’s a thorny morale balancing act and one I myself find problematic. But life is complicated and filled with every shade of gray imaginable. Just as I choose to not support people/organizations that have a proven history of not supporting me, I also choose to see the best in people as long as I can. Guilt by association is just that.

If either woman proves herself to be truly guilty, to truly hate us in her heart of hearts, I will not hesitate to call her out. I will be deeply saddened and hurt and angry. I will be mad as fucking hell. But until that time, until they show me otherwise, I will accept their support for us at face value.

Hate can consume us, whether from others or ourselves. It’s an insidious, ugly thing that – fast or slow – corrodes our ability to feel all other emotions. I feel bad for those who have it in their hearts. I understand the white-hot rage we feel when it’s directed at us. But pick your battles, and make sure your enemies are really enemies. I may not be a person of faith, but I try to have faith in the goodness and growth of others’ hearts.

ADDENDUM:
“The issue is, and always has been, [insert thing here] promoting a [insert thing here] to an impressionable, vulnerable audience.”

“It is not intended to deprive people of any [insert thing here], but to ban the promotion of [insert thing here] among the young generation.”
The first is some of your arguments about why we should be condemning Rachel Skarsten, the second is Russian Sports Minister Vitali Mutko defending his country’s law banning gay propaganda. One comes from a place of righteous anger about a man who has made homophobic statements in the past, the other comes from a place of hateful anger about a country that is systematically quashing the rights of its LGBT people. I am not comparing the sentiments, which are of course diametrically opposed. But I am comparing the language which we use to justify our demands. If we start to sound like what we are fighting against, we’ve lost already.

Tank Top Tuesday: Lost Girl Edition

Lost Girl is over for the season. Long live Lost Girl. For a thorough and comprehensive recap of the finale (which many of you oh-so-patient U.S. viewers finally got to watch last night), check out my episode recap on AfterEllen here.

There’s so much we’ll miss over these long, long, too long, months between the show’s return (late 2013 for Canada, early 2014 for the US – sigh). Bo’s blue and brown eyes. Lauren’s sly downcast smirk. Tamsin’s constant “bitch, please” face. Every single Kenzism. The Boobs O’Clock. So as a grateful shout-out to the Lost Girl costume department for never letting us girls (or those girls) down, an ode to the tank tops of Season 4. Like a snowflake, each one is special in her own way. I’ll refrain from making a joke about catching them on your tongue. Ahem.

Bo’s Greatest Tanks

Tamsin’s Greatest Tanks

Lauren’s Greatest Not-Quite Tanks
(Can you believe Lauren didn’t really wear any tanks? Close enough.)

Kenzi’s Greatest Trucker Tank

Bonus Kitsune Tanks

Because, you know, why not?
