More Marvel-ous

Honestly, “The Marvels” wasn’t a bad movie. I wouldn’t say it was a great movie, but it was a fun ride with some super snazzy – and, again – fun fight sequences. Yes, it might be confusing for people who had not also watched the series “Ms. Marvel” or watched “Wandavision” – not to mention the first Captain Marvel film. But all the hand-wringing over “The Marvels” having the worst Marvel Cinematic Universe opening yet is disingenuous because of course “The Marvels” was going to have the worst MCU opening.

Most of the reports that breathlessly called “The Marvels” a flop did at least mention that we’re all suffering from some justifiable superhero fatique. Like, you can’t flood the zone with movies, TV shows, sequels, spinoffs, additional sequels, more spinoffs, more TV shows and even more movies for FIFTEEN STRAIGHT YEARS without people starting to lose a little interest – if for no other reason than the sheer time commitment it takes to watch every damn thing.

But what I haven’t seen reported nearly as much is any reference to the unmistakable sexist fanboy backlash the first Captain Marvel movie faced. Let me tell you, the so-called “anti-woke” crowd hasn’t gotten any less obnoxious in the years since, they’ve just gained their own billionaire fanboys to help amlify their message. So, yeah, of course “The Marvels” wasn’t going to get great numbers. This one has THREE women leads. And two of them aren’t even WHITE.

Please, spare me. It’s not like since 2016 we’re all had to endure an emboldened subset of people who define themselves largely by the things they hate (Libs! Illegals! Diversity! Inclusion! Fair Election Results! Masks! Vaccines! Queers! Libraries!) and dedicate themselves to opposing those things in any and every way possible. Oh wait, we have. We all have and it’s horrible.

Oh, and another thing I don’t see in many of the reports about this blockbuster disappointment is this is the only MCU movie that was released during the SAG-AFTRA strike. So literally none of its actors were able to hit the red carpet or go on talk show to promote this damn thing. The actors strike ended Nov. 9. “The Marvels” premiered Nov. 10. Like, there’s a reason the studios send the stars on huge press tours before their movies come out. Because publicity works!

Anyway, it irks me that most of the mainstream reports I read left out some important context. And it irks me that I have to bring up said context instead of focusing on what originally irked me about the movie. And, once again, it boils down to context.

So here’s the thing, I truly think emotional arcs in “The Marvels” only really make sense if you read Carol Danvers and Maria Rambeau as a couple. Like, I know, blah blah they were besties. And, I know Monica, called her “Aunt Carol,” but her feelings of abandonment literally decades later read more like daughter than anything else.

Also [SPOILER ALERT, BUT IT’S GAY STUFF SO YOU’LL PROBABLY WANNA KNOW] Tessa Thompson’s brief but important cameo as Valkyrie also only makes sense if you read it as the Captain and the King sharing a more-than-platonic past together. I mean, she worse that sharp suit and she called Carol “Marv.” MARV!

If only Marvel was brave enough to go higher, further, fastest when it came to its superheroes and their sexuality.

Marvels-ous!

Well, now, doesn’t this look fun? I enjoyed “Captain Marvel” because female superhero badassery, duh. And I enjoyed Monica Rambeau in “WandaVision” and briefly “She-Hulk.” And, yes, I enjoyed “Ms. Marvel” because isn’t it great when more young, diverse characters enter a cinematic universe. So, all three? And they kind Freaky Friday around each other? Yes, three times YES. I still don’t understand why Disney decided to push this back from the summer to November, typically when award season prestige pieces get trotted into the autumnal light. But I am just excited to be excited for another female-led superhero movie that looks like a lot of fun instead of super, deadly serious. And colorful! Amd KITTENS! (Well, I mean, they look like kittens and that’s good enough for me.) Go team!

Brie on Lesbian Toast

So, here’s a question. Did Harper's Bazaar dress Brie Larson specifically to appeal to lesbians and queer women or did the Harper's Bazaar dress Brie Larson specifically to appeal to lesbians and queer women for their for their Reinvention Issue? Because, truly, there is no other way to interpret this styling. For instance, on the cover she’s giving early 90s Marky Mark. All she needs is Kate Moss glued to her side.
And then here, well, the tank top and cowboy boots require no explanation to lesbians. (I mean it is a Tuesday.)
Not to mention the inability to sit in a chair as it was intended.
In conclusion, thank you whatever stylist was looking out for us queer ladies and made us feel loved and seen with this photoshoot.

X-cellent Ladies

I guess this is the week I write about trailers for movies I’m not actually that excited to watch but will have to begrudgingly watch because of HOT WOMEN. Truly, I am really that simple. Anyway, I’ve watched (I think) most of the Fast & Furious franchise films, though not necessarily in order and not necessarily at full attention. But the new Fast X brings together not just Michelle Rodriguez, not just Charlize Theron, not just Helen Mirren, but also now Brie Larson and, like, I’m only human. If you make Charlize and Michelle bare-knuckle fight each other I am going to watch. There is no other option. Show me the carnage.

p.s. Also, I just remembered that I didn’t watch No. 9 because they were wankers and gave Charlize this haircut. I mean she still pulls it off, but come on.

C/Kate the Greats

Well, would you look at that — going on a full week of daily postings. My personal heartbreak notwithstanding, I certainly have missed writing here every day. So it feels good getting back into the swing of things. And, guess what, I’m about to have a lot more free time. So who knows, maybe I can write even more, better things for you. A recently dumped gay gal can dream.

Speaking of dreams, I saw in a recent interview with “Tár” director Todd Field that he hopes to work on a project starring…wait for it…Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet.

*pauses for unrelenting lesbian squealing*

Yep, that’s right, according to his interview with Variety, Field said he wants to work with Cate and Kate and has an idea to bring the C/Kates together, saying:

“I always think of the two ‘C/Kates’ a little bit about how we thought about DeNiro and Pacino before they were in that scene in Michael Mann’s ‘Heat.’ It was there as we were all waiting to have a scene with the two of them together. I think the ‘C/Kates’ at some point, they need to work together.”
Um, yes please. And thank you. Thank you very much.

I have no idea whether this idea will get out of the idea phase (get the idea?) But I certainly will expend a not small part of my gay energy hoping it will. And as we wait for the blessed C/Kate coupling to occur (I mean, obviously, they have to be queer in this project right? They have to be. We will accept no substitute), please enjoy these images of the C/Kates already canoodling.

Angling to make Brie part of a thruple even!
p.s. Yes, I have seen “Tár” and plan to have a full review soon. It’s sure…something. Sure is.

Tank Top Tuesday: Brie Edition

As we continue through this seemingly endless pandemic (thanks, unvaccinated people — I just love being held hostage by the most willfully ignorant and maliciously antagonistic people in society), may we be reminded of the power of new hobbies. Perhaps you took up baking bread these past 18 months. Or started gardening. Or, like Brie Larson, became an expert archer. Like, I know she’s Captain Marvel and all, but I could get behind a “Hunger Games” reboot. But, obviously, make it gay and include a lot more sports bras. What? She suggested it. And, of course, my feelings about sports bras being abbreviated tank tops remain unchanged. To new hobbies!

Gender Fuck Thursday: Gay Googles Edition

Things you should know about Brie Larson. 1) She plays a superhero with a wife and child back on Earth, allegedly. 2) She looks great in a gray pin-stripe suit - like, so great. And 3) Ten-year-old Brie would have spent her recess in the library Googling “How do you know if you’re gay?” Wait, she’d Google what now?

Oh, right, there’s a 4) which is she has her own Youtube channel and last week she used it to post a video of her taking online quizzes. And one of those online quizzes asked her: “You're 10 years old, how do you spend an hour of recess?”

Of course, this sent Queer Twitter into a tizzy. I think we should probably, maybe not read too much into it. Like, maybe she just really liked school libraries as a kid. But, regardless, this is the kind of hard-hitting news and in-depth investigative reporting I hope to enjoy for the next four years.

My Weekend Crush

So I rewatched “Captain Marvel” last week, the first time since I saw it in the theaters. And in many ways it’s underrated. But it’s also pretty conventional in other ways. Superhero origin story meets female empowerment storyline. I still think “Wonder Woman” is a better movies, just in its construction and emotional impact. But it’s wild that pretty much those two are our only two modern female superhero stories to choose from on the big screen. So, naturally, we end up pitting them against each other.

Yet men have a billionaire guy who dresses as a bat, a guy who shoots spider webs from his hands, a guy who shrinks like an ant, a guy who is the world’s biggest Boy Scout with a shield, a guy who talks with fish, another billionaire guy who builds himself a superhero suit, a guy who is an actual god, and an alien guy with a big red S on his chest…just to name a few. All I’m saying is, superhero ladies gotta stick together. Or kiss. I’m also fine with kissing. Happy weekend, all.

SGALGG/GGALGG: Oscars Edition

Told ya it was coming. So outside of Janelle Monae representing for queer black artists to start the shows, the Oscars were a pretty straight affair. At least, what we saw on television was pretty straight. As we all know, hand out a few shiny trophies and let the champagne flow and suddenly Straight Gals Acting Like Gay Gals are everywhere – or at least everywhere in the eye of the beholder. But, as has been a welcome trend these last few years, there also actual Gay Gals Acting Like Gay Gals. Queer women came out in their finest this Oscar season. So it appears even lesbians and bisexual women are attracted to golden naked men. Who knew.

Brie Larson, Sigourney Weaver & Gal Gadot

I’m not really a threesome person, but YES PLEASE LET ME WATCH.

Laura Dern & Renee Zellweger

Bridget Jones’s Later-in-Life Lesbianism

Scarlett Johansson & Florence Pugh

It’s so unfair they’ve cast Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz in the new “Black Widow” movie, because now I have to see it.

Geena Davis & Sandra Oh

No, they’re not doing anything particularly gay. But they’re Geena Davis and Sandra Oh standing together in beautiful dresses. So, duh, gay interest.

Natalie Portman

No, Natalie isn’t doing anything particularly gay. But she has the names of all the female directors snubbed this year for the Oscars embroidered on her coat hem in a sign of feminist solidarity and as we all know any feminism worth a damn is intersectional which means it would include the concerns of POC and the LGBTQ community. So, duh, gay interest.

Regina King

No, Regina isn’t doing anything particularly gay. But have you seen her arms and that dress? So, duh, gay interest.

Salma Hayek & Penelope Cruz

I’ve had dreams that started like this, Part I.

Margot Robbie & Charlize Theron

The strong top energy coming off Charlize as she watches over Margot reading her program is palpable.

Jessica Alba & Sofía Vergara

I’ve had dreams that started like this, Part II.

Greta Gerwig & Saoirse Ronan

I’m usually not cool with maestros getting handsy with their ingénue’s, but you know what? I’ll allow it.

Jane Fonda & Olivia Colman

Women of a certain age can totally get it.

GGALGG: Oscars Edition

Janelle Monae & Billy Porter

It’s like we’re witnessing the coolest wizard convention in the universe.

Beanie Feldstein & Kaitlyn Dever

Out queer actress who played straight with her straight actress friend who played gay.

Janet Mock, Lena Waithe & Rashida Jones

Proof that LGBTQ people totally still like straight people.

Maria Bello & Dominique Crenn

Mazel tov to the newly engaged couple!

Tessa Thompson & Amandla Stenberg

Just two incredibly talented, out, black queer actresses dancing at an Oscars party in the year 2020. Sometimes, it’s almost like we are living in the future.

Tank Top Tuesday

A new year, same great tank tops. This is a vintage Bette Porter tank top, but no matter the time period a tank top is timeless. So as we enter this new decade, rejoice in the knowledge that a tank top remains right for almost any occasion. And always something to look forward to.

Daisy Ridley

I have not seen “Rise of Skywalker” yet, but I guess I will eventually.

Brittany Snow & lapmate Anna Kendrick

Sure, ladies, that’s a “microphone.”

Kat Barrell

When is “Wynonna Earp” coming back again?

Alison Brie & Brie Larson

I…I just realized these are two weighty bries.

Tessa Thompson

Can’t wait to see the King of New Asgard in action.

Katie McGrath

High Ponytail Villainess Level 10: Achieved.

Gillian Anderson

I miss Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, but I can’t wait to see Dr. Jean F. Milburn again soon.
