My Weekend Crush

The pipeline from starring in a queer film/movie to being queer and loving it remains undefeated. Chloë Grace Moretz, who famously played gay in the 2018 film “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” and voiced the non-binary and genderfluid title character of 2023’s “Nimona” wed her girlfriend of seven years, model Kate Harrison, over Labor Day weekend. And it was such a big deal none other than Vogue covered it. Yes, I know, Miranda Priestly must be so pissed she got scooped. Mazel tov to the happy, fashionable couple. I won’t comment on those cowboy hats, cause who is to judge another person’s cowgirl fantasies. Certainly not me. Congratulations to Chloe and Kate and happy weekend, all.

My Weekend Crush

Add another to the files of, “Oh, I didn’t realize. But, yeah, that makes sense.” Chloë Grace Moretz has been quietly (or not so quietly, I don’t follow her directly) living her best gay life for the past six years. The actress of “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” fame started dating model Kate Harrison the same year that movie came out, apparently. And they’ve been happily Instagramming their lives together ever since it seems. Heck, even their Frenchie has an insta. So good for the happy couple, who recently posted from a wedding they attended together. Speaking of weddings, it’s been six years? Maybe put a ring on that, ladies? Or not? What do I know, I’m recently divorced. Anyway, mazel tov to the happy couple and happy couples everywhere. See, this is how you work on not becoming miserable single cat lady, JD. The First Post

I have been pretty excited about “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” movie since it was announced. And now that the first trailer has been released, that excitement has only grown. And it’s proof all those studios who hemmed and hawed missed the fuck out. Their loss is our gain. While even three years ago a story like this might have feel like a quaint historical relic, today it is a reminder we are never too far away from people thinking what we are is wrong and must be fixed.

Hey, here’s a puzzler. Why would a movie that won overwhelming raves from critics and took home the prestigious grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival take two whole months to sell? Why wasn’t it snapped up immediately in the midst of a bidding war? Well, if you guessed, “because it has lesbians in it,” you just might be right.

Last week the film “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” a movie I’ve been excited about since it was first announced way back in the fall of 2016, finally sold to FilmRise, an indie distributor whose most famous project so far was “Going Clear,” the Scientology documentary. It’s a great pick up for them, no doubt, but where were the other studios?

Look, not to bring up “Carol” again for the umpteenth time, but that “Carol” did not even get a best picture nomination and “Philadelphia,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Moonlight,” and “Call Me By Your Name” all did is the way Hollywood sees LGBTQ films about men versus LGBTQ films about women, period.

The Moviefication of Cameron Post

So it’s about time 2016 did us a solid. Granted, nothing can ever forgive this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year. Not even close. But we will take any little ray of happiness we can take. And this, this is a big, bright, beautiful ray.

Late last week The Hollywood Reporter broke news that a film version of Emily M. Danforth’s critically acclaimed young adult novel “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” was headed to the big screen. And it will star Chloe Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane and be directed by out queer filmmaker Desiree Akhavan (from “Appropriate Behavior,” “The Slope” and “Girls” fame.) No, this is not a dream. This is more like gay lady heaven.

Set in 1993, the book is about a teenage girl who is forced into so-called gay conversion therapy. You know, the horrible thing our Vice President-Elect Mike Pence thinks we should use taxpayer money to support. So, can anyone say topical?

You might also remember “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” as a book banned by the a Delaware school board from its summer reading list because they claimed it used the word “fuck” too much. Not the gay stuff, they swear. Just the bad swears. Even though, you know, other totally acceptable books on the list also had naughty words but were about not gay people.

It’s also the book my fellow writers from the site formerly known as AfterEllen rallied behind and started a book buying campaign to get it into the hands of teens in the area anyway. Good eggs, that bunch – good eggs.

Right. So, please revel in this lovely news. Films like this, which tell such important and timely stories, can only help in the days, months, years ahead. Art can make a difference, and shine a light exactly where – and when – we need it.

All About K-Stew

Cinema’s continual fascination with How Terrible It Is For Women To Age, because what other stories can we possibly tell about women as they age, is beyond tiring. It is especially so when you throw in the adversarial younger woman vs. older woman dynamic – because again, heaven forbid we actually get along as women instead of spar as rivals. Also, have you noticed how it’s always dudes who write and direct these All About Eve-things. Still with that said, the trailer for “The Clouds of Sils Maria” looks like a well-acted – if not entirely new – film with a very talented female cast. I mean, how can you resist the combination of Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloë Grace Moretz? Also, there is a distinctly lesbian vibe happening between Juliette’s older actress, Kristen’s younger assistant, non? I mean, hello, the whole play-within-a-movie is about an older woman who falls for a younger woman. Yes, yes, and then there’s K-Stew’s G-string. Fine, I’m going to go see this. But if there are more lingering shots of puffy alpine clouds than actual lesbian content I’m going to be Bella Swan mopey the rest of the day.

There will be blood

I’m, basically, a wuss. I own more than one nightlight. And I can’t watch scary movies without a big, big pillow. So then the new remake of “Carrie” leaves me conflicted. On the one hand, awesome cast of Chloë Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer and more. On the other hand, so much scary. On the one hand, queer filmmaker and “Boys Don’t Cry” director Kimberly Peirce is at the helm. On the other hand, so much blood. On the one hand, classic story of bullying, power and vengeance. On the other hand, they already told this classic story of bullying, power and vengeance pretty well already. Also, have I mentioned the scary? But, in the end, my curiosity will overcome – I think – my fear and I’ll venture to see what one picked on girl and a bucket of pigs blood can unleash on the world. Someone get me a really big pillow. Happy Halloween, gals and ghouls.
