Historically Stupid Men, Always Men
But then, why would we expect anything less from the World’s Most Racist Serial Killer (I mean, he killed USAID, which is killing…*stares in ebola crisis*). He’s mad about Elliot Page being cast as (maybe Achilles, maybe not Achilles, really anything) in the movie as well because why just be a Nazi when you can also be a transphobic piece of shit? Anyway, I’m going to see Christopher Nolan’s next opus, not because I’m a homer for Homer. But because it will make Elon crash out even more if it does well at the box office. And these days, it’s the little things that get you through.
p.s. Like how attractive is this female cast? All their faces could launch a thousand ships – and more. So Stay mad, Musky! Stay mad.

No Verity Gay
Well, now, this is disappointing. And, believe me, that’s hard for me to say when you’ve got two hot ladies kissing front and center. But, alas, context. Always, always context. Because under normal gay circumstances I would LOVE to see Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson kiss on screen because, duh, I have eyes and am a lesbian. But, tricksy tricksy context.
You see, despite initial reports, Anna Hathaway and Dakota Johnson’s characters aren’t really kissing in the new trailer for “Verity.” Look closely. No, you see, they’re Sapphic Psychosis Smoochin. You know the kind. Where a gal starts kissing one person and pulls back only to realize, IT’S A GIRL. Or, maybe it’s not even a girl – it’s just their overactive psychotic imagination. Possibly murderous, too. Don’t forget that.
We have, certainly, seen this before. Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega (and tempting poor Jane Wickline) in “Taste.” Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis (and possibly Evil Natalie Portman) going at it in “Black Swan.” It’s the old fake-out. Just another niche version of the Very Special Lesbian Kiss Episode of Sweeps Weeks of yore.
And, again, while normally an Anne and Dakota smooch would be, you know, not a bad thing, the bad thing is that it is likely solely for the oh-lalas and not any real plot and or queerness. How do I know? Well, because “Verity” is based on the book by Colleen Hoover and a little research tells me there are no queer storylines in her book, nor any smooching between the two women in question. So they added it to the movie to, you know, spice things up. But, safely, without any real gay stuff.
It should be noted that Hoover’s work was behind “It Ends With Us,” a.k.a. The Most Disastrously Marketed Movie of the 2020s that has resulted in me disliking everyone involved more (minus perhaps Jenny Slate).
Annie Hathaway, come on – can you give us something truly sapphic sometime soon? Sure, there was “Eileen,” which was kind of gayish (but mostly sad), and there is “Mother Mary,” which is in limited release but [SPOILERS] Anne and Michaela Coel don’t ever kiss or define their past “relationship.” The sapphics would appreciate a real queer moment from you. And, no, being in “Brokeback Mountain” doesn’t count – at least not for us. (Same for those devilish Prada movies...)

Music Monday: Owned By Anne
Wait, I’m realizing some of you may not have seen Anne Hathaway totally own Kelly Clarkson at her own game – and with her own song. What a delight from a simpler time (2022) back when movies about scamming billionaires seemed more quaint than the metaphorical locusts of our christofascist capitalist hellscape endtimes. But, yeah, this was cute. Ah, simpler times. Happy Monday, kittens.

Burial Beats
Fine, I kind of dig this song. Like, could Anne Hathaway's single "Burial" from her new film “Mother Mary” be a banger? You know, the movie where she plays a pop diva reuniting with her former fashion designer lover played by Michaela Coel. I appreciate the ethereal Lady Gaga schtick her character has got going on. Though, could we expect less from the Ultimate Theater Kid Anne “Les Miserables, Wrecking Ball and beating Kelly Clarkson at Kellyoke with her own song” Hathaway? No, you could not. Truly, the only thing I wish is that all these teaser and trailers showed Anne and Michaela being more gay together. More! Gay! Together! Now that, that’s truly, that’s my favorite song.

Be(She)Deviled
Um, hello, I know there’s nothing explicitly sapphic about “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” But there’s Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt looking better than ever. So of course it appeals to my extremely gay sensibilities. Duh, I have eyes. Releasing this and “Mother Mary” back-to-back may almost be too much for my wlw heart to take. Almost.

Mother's Here
Well, well, well. Now if this isn’t something, at long last last, to live to the spring for. Did that sound dark? Just you wait, you’ll feel a whole different kind of dark once you watch this. The trailer for “Mother Mary,” the Anne Hathaway/Michaela Coel “psychosexual pop thriller” about a pop star and her estranged former fashion designer lover, is finally here. And when I say finally, I mean a more than two and a half year wait. I have to say, I was surprised and mostly in a good way. No, I wasn’t expecting the glimpses of supernatural darkness and body gore, if that indeed is what we are seeing here. But I love the over-the-top “epic pop melodrama” operaticness of these clips. And the chemistry between Anne and Michaela, well, it’s good. I’d like to see a little more good chemistry between their lips. But, you know, I guess they have to save some stuff for the movie. My only worry, well, as the trailer says – I don’t know if they’re both gonna make it. But, goodness, will I be rooting for them.

Gender Fuck Thursday: Devil Wears Prada 2
Well, well, well – turns out they did move at a glacial pace. But 19 years later, Meryl, Anne, Emily, Stanley & Co are back – or should we say fashionably late? – for “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” Now, I know there was nothing explicitly sapphic about the original movie. But it starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci – it’s at the very least queer adjacent. Ally, and all that. Thanks to the ubiquitous invasion of cameras and unrelenting aggressiveness of the algorithms, I’ve been fed a nonstop stream of live shots of the cast filming on the streets of New York recently. I find significant glee watching Anne chase after Meryl again. And, as I was saying, while no one in the cast is queer, Anne’s suit is 100% bi curious.

My Weekend Crush
Emily Blunt gay panicking over Anne Hathaway in Eileen for over a minute:

Come On, Eileen
Well, well, well. I just knew, I knew, from the early talk around “Eileen” that I was going to be intrigued. But now that I’ve watched the trailer. Yeah, I’m obsessed. We’re definitely gonna be watching this. Anne Hathaway in the femme fatale role her career arch has been asking for since her days as the Princess of Genovia? Yes, very much please. A stylish, boozy, 1960s thriller set in a correctional facility with a mousy younger woman and sophisticated older woman dynamic and possible (I mean, we see it in the trailer) sweet lady kisses? Hello, obviously yes. Like Carol, but with higher stakes — and more possible bloodshed? You betcha, pass the popcorn.
I haven’t read the book this noir is based on, but the genre and its pulpy companions are always ripe for a little sapphic interlude. I don’t know if it’s more than heavy flirting (and dancing and thigh touching and at least one kiss), but I’m a sucker for this kind of movie dynamic because who doesn't love a sexy, mysterious, possibly unhinged woman? (Again, only in movieworld, not the real world. Same goes for the May-Dec trope.)I’m just thrilled that Anne keeps picking interesting projects and showcasing the next era of her career which I am very much here for. We saw a glimpse of this Anne as the over-the-top starlet in “Ocean’s 8.” And I hope for many, many more meaty parts with sapphic under — and overtones. I especially can’t wait for her next project, “Mother Mary” with Michaela Coel, which I hope will be Anne’s WLW main course after she serves us up to this noir WLW teaser.

Mother May They
Anne has signed on to the new A24 film (that’s the studio behind “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “Moonlight”) alongside Michaela Coel of “I May Destroy You” and “Chewing Gum” fame. In it, the two women play lovers (but is either named Cindi — I know, that’s a deep cut) where “a fictional musician” (Anne) is in a relationship with an “iconic fashion designer” (Michaela). The film called “Mother Mary” is being described as an “epic pop melodrama,” and will have original music by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff.
I’m pretty excited to see what this movie is all about, honestly. I think Anne and Michaela will make a stunning on screen pair. I am visualizing it now. I am happy about visualizing it now. I’ll be in my bunk until this comes out, I guess.

Happy (Honeymoon) Pride
I don’t know if there’s any way to watch this commercial for Bulgari without thinking it’s actually an extended honeymoon video for Anne Hathaway and Zendaya. Like, I didn’t even realize they were engaged. Mazel, ladies, mazel! But, seriously, what are we supposed to think with all the dancing for each other, sitting knowingly on the bed together and touching heads while holding one another on a luxurious veranda overlooking the Eternal City. It’s like the most posh “Carol” sequel ever. I mean, I guess that’s one way to kick off Pride Month. Happy Pride, kittens.

Gender Fuck Thursday: Tux & Tails Edition

Well now, here is a trend I can 100 percent get behind. Please behold the majesty of actresses showing up on the red carpet in full black tuxedos – with tails, even. Yes, of course, actresses in tuxedos isn’t necessarily a new trend (Marlene and Josephine say hello). But I greatly appreciate its increased arrival on red carpets of late. Which, of course, begs the question – who tuxed it best?

I mean, it’s almost unfair. She’s gotten so much practice in “A Simple Favor.” But the cane and top hat really put this in another league.
Daisy Ridley

The Tuxedo Force is strong with this one. Plus, she already looks like the emcee at a fancy, old-timey cabaret.
Evan Rachel Wood

Is it fair if she pulls out the finger guns?
Janelle Monae

I mean, it’s not a top hat. But it is still a vey impressive hat.
Anne Hathaway

We knew Anne knew how to work a tux back after that what-the-fuck-is-James-Franco-even-doing-there Oscar co-hosting debacle. But I’m not sure how much we fully knew how hot daddy Prince of Genovia posing with her future queen for the royal engagement photos well Anne could work a tux.
Cate Blanchett

By standing next to this Christmas tree in this tux, Cate has decreed that all future Christmas movies be lesbian movies. So is it written, so shall it be.
Right, so as I was saying, who tuxed it best?
Trick question, they’re all winners. But, if you really think about it, aren’t we the real winners? Yeah. We sure are.

"Ocean's 8" Lesbian Movie Review

Yes, kittens, “Ocean’s 8” is a lesbian movie – in its heart where it counts. OK, fine, technically it’s a lesbian-in-spirit movie on screen. But, come on, Cate Blanchett is called “Lou” and slinks around in a series of increasingly amazing suits and then rides off into the sunset on a motorcycle – quite literally. So, Harold, that’s pretty lesbian.
But really, what “Ocean’s 8” is is a reminder that the world needs to be shown more women together, period. In fact, if you put a group of smart, talented, charismatic women together and give them something to do other than pine for a man, the result is basically magic.
Look, Hollywood has been doing this for decades with men. Men at work. Men at war. Men in prison. Men in space. Men stealing shit. Men buying shit. Men, men, men. We get it, my dudes. You do things.
But, here’s a revolutionary realization, so do women. Women also work, go to war, go to prison, go to space, steal shit, buy shit. Women, women, women. And, guess what, they’re good at it, too. And it’s interesting, and different, than just watching a bunch of dudes do the exact same thing.
Take your “Killing Eve” or your “Orange Is the New Black” or your “Hidden Figures” or any other entertainment that trusts women to tell their own stories, to be their own stars. There is something deliciously alive and fresh about the chemistry between these casts. Why? Because for so damn long we haven’t been shown women as much more than the love interest, side kick, token female.
But guess what, we contain multitudes upon our multitudes.
“Ocean’s 8” is unabashedly fun and unquestionably clever. It’s also unashamed of its femininity. Now by femininity I don’t mean it’s “Ocean’s 11” with a cheap pink makeover. This isn’t that “Made Just For Women!” crap they try to sell us like pens and razors. This is fundamentally female in a way that celebrates women’s abilities and differences. And, at the same time, should be universally interesting because, duh, women are interesting.
All of the women are wonderful – Cate, Sandra, Anne, Sarah, Rihanna, Mindy, Awkwafina, Mindy. I would happily watch them read all of updated privacy policies I have steadfastly ignored over my lifetime out loud. And then I would ask them to read them again, but more slowly.
In short, I will happily watch “Ocean’s 8” again – and again, and again. Will I make Lou and Debbie kiss in my head each time? Of course. But then, everyone else is, too. Because, as I said, “Ocean’s 8” is totally a lesbian movie. It just doesn’t know it yet. But, luckily, we do.
