Have Yourself A Merry Little Lezmas

Damn, this past week’s news cycle has been bleak. I don’t know about you, but it has been extra hard to get into the holiday spirit this year. It’s 2025, the horrors persist, but so do we. Like, next week is Christmas? Shit, how’d that happen? So, if you celebrate or just want to feel a semblance of lesbian joy this season, here are two opportunities to deck the halls with lots of sapphics. We have not one, but TWO lesbian made-for-TV Christmas movies to look forward to. Yes, stop snickering. You know you look forward to the Hallmark/Lifetime cheesiness as long as it’s gay.

First up is “The Christmas Baby” starring “Bomb Girls” star and Hallmark’s resident lesbian Ali Liebert and half of Wynonna Earp’s WayHaught Katherine Barrell. They play a couple who finds, you guessed it, a baby during the holidays. Like it just shows up, poof. Talk about your immaculate birth. Well, at least it avoids the pregnant lesbian trope. “The Christmas Baby” airs at 8 p.m. Sunday on Hallmark Channel.

Next up, at least for our Canadian friends, is “The Firefighter’s Christmas Calendar” (formerly “The Firefighter’s Christmas Wish,” but after watching that trailer “Calendar” does make more sense…). The premise, a queer female photographer goes to shoot a sexy firefighter Christmas calendar and runs into a sexy also queer female firefighter. That old chestnut! But seriously, I will be watching this. Well, I would be at 8 p.m. Sunday on W Wetwork – if I lived in Canada. The project was first announced for Lifetime, but no U.S. air date is scheduled yet. But trust me, if I find out, I’ll tell you. Or, better yet, find a Canadian friend – and invite me!

OK, so feeling a little more festive? I know If we can’t be merry, at least we can be gay.

My Weekend (Vengeance) Crush

Aw, man. Look at these two. I almost forgot what it was like to be invested in a long-term, healthy queer couple on screen. Anyway, happy Return to Purgatory Day for all who celebrate. Go figure out how to access Tubi and let’s go kick some demon ass. This “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance” special isn’t going to watch itself. Like, WayHaught hugs await! Happy weekend, all.

Home, Sweet Purgatory

And that’s why we call them WayHaught. Dominique Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell made quite the handsome couple at Comic-Con, as expected, and I can’t wait to see the domestic not-so-tranquility Waverly and Nicole are getting up to in good old Purgatory. The full trailer for Tubi’s new 90-minute special “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance” was released at the con last weekend. And it looks like another gun-slinging good time, with some smoochies thrown in between the face punches. You know, typical Earp heir shit.

Dom and their short hair will debut in the reboot (emphasis on boots), but in interviews they’ve said Waverly is not changing pronouns. But don't worry, you heard me mention the smoochies already, right? Yeah, bring it on, Earps. We got some demon asses to kick and wives to kiss.

Who Ya Gonna Call

Gosh, it’s been a while since I squealed in any kind of delight. But here we are. Welcome back to Purgatory, Earpers. Wynonna Earp returns with a vengeance. The gang’s getting back together, and they’re bringing everything good (and bad – otherwise there wouldn't be a show) back with them. Knee-high boots! Ten-gallon hats! Dom’s short hair! I know this is just the briefest of teases (expect more this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con), but it has me genuinely excited for the rest of this year. Can’t say I’ve felt that feeling in a while either. So, you know, let’s celebrate strong women kicking ass in every arena, from entertainment to politics. Because when it’s time to fight the demons, you know who to call. (Women, in case you were wondering, you call women.)

My Wynonna Crush

*unintelligible gurgling noises*

If perchance you didn’t hear all the joyous lesbian squealing yesterday afternoon, you might have missed the news. But just like you can’t keep a good bad Revenant down, you can’t keep a beloved Wynonna Earp canceled. Yep, our favorite heir to a generational curse is returning for a 90-minute special on Tubi. Yes, I hear the delayed squealing now.

Series Creator/Executive Producer/Mother of Unicorns Emily Andras announced the news in a Vanity Fair exclusive yesterday, and before you ask yes all of your favs will be back. Melanie Scrofano/Wynonna, Dom Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell/WayHaught and Tim Rozon/Doc are returning for to face off with a “revenge-driven female villain” in “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.” We get WayHaught AND a female villain? Be still my heart.

The action will pick up “some time after” we last saw them embark on their own happily ever afters. Per Emily:

“Doc and Wynonna have been on an adventure, and Waverly and Nicole have been at home in [the Earp hometown of] Purgatory, doing their thing. I think it’s going to be really interesting to see, hopefully, what gets everybody home—maybe facing a challenge they’ve never faced before, something pretty intense. It’s all your favorite—hopefully—character moments, but also a little bit about growing up and sort of, like, being who you are now and earning all your choices.”

They will apparently start filming “soon,” and the special will premiere later this year. THIS YEAR, Earpers. THIS YEAR! Well, at least one good thing will come out of 2024 then. So there’s that.

Now, I know, we’re all frantically trying to figure out if we get Tubi - which we should because it’s a free ad-supported streamer. I can’t wait to strap back in with this wild crew. Earpers remain undefeated as the hardest fighting fans in fandom. Happy weekend, all.

Vacation Vixen: WayHaught Edition

I know we haven’t had a full debrief on the season/likely-to-possible series finale of “Wynonna Earp” yet. But let me just say than the show and its finale are so much more than fan service (but, goodness, what fan service). What this really was, despite all the demons or perhaps because of them, hopeful storytelling. And all the WayHaught goodness? Well, you cannot really ask for more of that. What makes a hero? What makes a family? Love, honestly. A whole lot of love.

A Fine Romance

You know the saying, “Gonna give the gays everything they want?” Well, that glorious Mother of Unicorns Emily Andras has taken that as marching orders in the best way possible. So far the remaining (and hopefully not last) six episodes of “Wynonna Earp” have been pure fandom Nirvana. The first two installments have been fun, adventurous and fun some more. They bring to mind some of the best Monsters of the Week “X-Files” episodes, but with a lot more gay stuff.

Speaking of The Gay, the show has gone full shipper service with its WayHaught storylines and references. You’ve got to give them credit, they know the Big Queer Bus (and our LGBTQ+ allies) that got them to where they are. And they’re going to do everything they can to give us the stories we deserve. The scenes between Waverly and Nicole this season have been wonderful, and also wonderfully swoony.

I mean, come on, having Nicole Haught don her old sheriff’s uniform and that white Stetson as she’s perfectly silhouette by the slowly setting sun? Please, lesbian romance novelists only dream of a moment that perfectly, spectacularly gay.

While I hope against hope that this fourth season will not be the last for this scrappy, big-hearted show, I trust it will continue to be an exuberant and refreshing ride for as long as it can. I can’t wait to see what hijinks they get into Friday night. I just know it’s gonna be gay.

p.s. Yeah, Emily, we totally noticed the hat callback. Noticed and very, very appreciated. Ahem.

My Weekend Crush

Well now, here is some genuinely wonderful news amid all the darkness. Dominique Provost-Chalkley, a.k.a. Waverly Earp a.k.a. Half of WayHaught a.k.a. The One from That Cheerleading Dance, has come out as queer. In a post commemorating her 30th birthday on her website, www.startthewave.org, the actress discussed her “journey to happiness.” Hint: It involves boys and girls and really all humans. And now she is out and proud about it.

She ended her post like this:

This also means that the real-life Nicole Haught (a.k.a Kat Barrell) and real-life Waveryly Earp (a.k.a. Dominique Provost-Chalkley) both like girls (and boys and whatever) in real life. Now, if that’s not something bring a little joy in dark times, I don’t know what is. Happy stay home and stay healthy weekend, kittens.

Fuck ’Em

For no reason in particular, fuck the GOP. Fuck everyone in the Trump administration who promotes his endless racism, stupidity and corruption. Fuck those 52 Republican senators who abdicated their duty to protect the Constitution and perform necessary checks on the Executive Branch’s powers. (Mitt Romney can stay, but is it really heroic to not actively contribute to the destruction of our democracy and actually do your damn job?) Fuck the MAGA crowd whose only joy is causing pain. And fuck this infernal election year which is only 37 days old but already feels like 37 years. Or, if all this is tl:dr, please allow these lovely Betty White and others to express my sentiments exactly. I guess a picture really is worth a thousand fuck yous.

Lena Headey

Cersei flipping her own High Sparrow.

Ellen Page

Tiny Canadian FU.

Gillian Anderson

The fuck you is out there.

Regina Hall & Tracee Ellis Ross

Katherine Barrell

Office Haught says you have the right to fuck off.

Lucy Liu

Fucking off is elementary, dear Watson.

Diane Warren & Helen Mirren

That’s Dame Fuck Off to you.

Carrie Fisher

Nothing but respect for my Princess/General.

My Weekend Crush

You might have heard a mighty whoop on Jan. 15. It was Earpers the globe over rejoicing as filming started on the new, long-delayed fourth season of “WYnonna Earp.” As know all too well, financial troubles threatened to torpedo the show’s new season. So the #FightForWynonna campaign was launched and, damn, if fandom didn’t get things done.

Now, finally, the show is shooting. Production is expected to last through May in Calgary, and then will air in the summer on Space in Canada and Syfy in the U.S.

Show Creator/Lead Unicorn Emily Andras told the Calgary Herald:

“We tried to incorporate some of the values and feelings of the #fightforwynonna journey,” she says. “I think a lot of themes for Season 4 centre around the idea of fighting to protect what you love and your home and feelings of rebellion and resistance and the idea of being underdogs and fighting both bureaucracy and also evil seen and unseen. It’s that feeling of finding your people and making sure you are willing to go to war for the things you love and the people you love. If anything, I think those things have been reinforced thanks to #fightforwynonna.”
At least three new actors are also joining the cast this season: “Kim’s Convenience” star Andrew Phung, “Fortunate Son” actor Ty Olsson and 18-year-old actress/singer Martina Ortiz-Luis. I have absolutely no idea what characters they’ll be playing, but you know I’m excited to find out.

It’s been a long, fraught time for fans. And by the time we get new episodes it will be close to two years since Season 3 last premiered. But as they say, good things come to those who wait, and especially to those who fight for what they love. So welcome back, show. Can’t wait to see you. Happy weekend, all and Earpers.

Tank Top Tuesday

A new year, same great tank tops. This is a vintage Bette Porter tank top, but no matter the time period a tank top is timeless. So as we enter this new decade, rejoice in the knowledge that a tank top remains right for almost any occasion. And always something to look forward to.

Daisy Ridley

I have not seen “Rise of Skywalker” yet, but I guess I will eventually.

Brittany Snow & lapmate Anna Kendrick

Sure, ladies, that’s a “microphone.”

Kat Barrell

When is “Wynonna Earp” coming back again?

Alison Brie & Brie Larson

I…I just realized these are two weighty bries.

Tessa Thompson

Can’t wait to see the King of New Asgard in action.

Katie McGrath

High Ponytail Villainess Level 10: Achieved.

Gillian Anderson

I miss Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, but I can’t wait to see Dr. Jean F. Milburn again soon.

My Weekend Crush

When it rains good news for our little shit show, it pours. Which is considerably better than the other kinds of rain the show could, uh, pour. (Shit, guys, I’m talking about shit.) So earlier this month it was announced season 4 of “Wynonna Earp” was finally going to begin production after IDW, the studio that produces the series, ran out of money and filming was delayed by months and months. Now thanks to additional kick-ins from both Syfy and Space (the show’s U.S. and Canadian partners) we’re back on track and demons better beware.

And now, even more good news for Earper Nation. In a new cover story with Diva magazine, series star Kat Barrell (a.k.a. Officer Nicole Haught) came out as being attracted to both men and women. The actress is married to a man, which I hope I don’t need to remind folks makes her no less bisexual. Alas, the profile touches on some of the flack she received in real life from fans about being with a man. Guys, we can enjoy and idolize our favorite stars, but their private lives are theirs alone.

With that, welcome officially to the Big Gay Family, Kat. As if there was any question she was one of ours. No one can lay a Lesbian Thirst Trap that well without being part of our big LGBTQ umbrella. Happy weekend, all.

Go Earp, Young Woman

My, what big EVERYTHING you have. Holy macaroni, there is a lot happing in the new “Wynonna Earp” Season 3 trailer. And I’m not even talking about the mechanical bull. Or WayHaught sexiness. All I know is this show can’t be coming back at a better time. Because there’s like nothing on TV right now. Welcome back, Purgatory. It’s been hell without you.

Way Cute

And now, for your moment of lesbian Zen. After a tumultuous week let us all take respite in the utter and undeniable adorableness of Waverly Earp and Nicole Haught. Thank you, WayHaught, for being a calm ship in the storm. And, you know, stupid cute. “Wynonna Earp” season 3 returns July 20 on SyFy. I anxiously await the mayhem and gay lady kisses.

Haught Uniform

You guys, YOU GUYS. We need to talk about Officer Way Haught’s new uniform. Her totally Haught/hot new uniform. Her full bonkers/bananapants new uniform.

Oh, Emily Andras, you’ve done it again. You’ve given lesbians, bi girls and general lovers of beautiful ladies everywhere another gift from the queer lady heavens. This uniform, THIS UNIFORM. Like, are there a lot of underwater crimes in Purgatory? Because, dude, that thing is a wet suit if I’ve ever seen one.

Old Uniform:

New Uniform:

Whatever the reason, I applaud the Purgatory Sheriff Department for its ridiculously form-hugging sartorial choices. I also applaud the ditching of the khakis. Let’s face it, no one looks their best in khakis. I mean, Officer Haught did her best and sure filled them out as nicely as possible. But, yeah, bless this wet suit/sheriff’s uniform.

My Weekend Crush

You guys. If anyone ever tells you consent isn’t sexy, yeah, just show them this. Because consent is so, so sexy. As is this scene. As is everything to do with WayHaught. Look, I don’t know exactly what is up with dark eyes, bell stealing Waverly, but I know what’s happening between her and Officer Nicole Haught is real and really, really hot. So happy TGIWH (WayHaught) day. Happy weekend, all.

Earps, Earps and Away

Giddy up, little demons. It’s time for a new season of “Wynonna Earp.” Well, almost time. Like some pocket change away. Like can you stand it? No, I’m not sure if I can. Especially now that I hear Officer Haught is getting even more well-deserved screentime. Gosh, isn’t that such better news than pretty much the opposite over at “Supergirl?” The lesbian TV universe giveth and taketh away, thankfully this is the giveth.

This spring I did a little Wynonna Season 1 rewatch, and let me tell you, it was as fun as the first time. And, if this trailer is any indication, we’re in for a wild, wild gun-slinging, cheerleading, lady-kissing season. So saddle up, kittens. Haught damn, the Earp ladies are back. Soon.

Birthday Wishes

Hey! It’s my birthday! And what I want most for my birthday – besides that we elect our first female president in exactly one week – is for all of you to have as wonderful a day as Doccubus, Shoot, Clexa and WayHaught seem to be having in this video. What can you say, I love giving presents almost as much as I love receiving them. Enjoy, kittens.

Bring It Way-verly Back

You know what? I sure miss Waverly and Haught. Though, fortunately, they’re coming back for a second season and there is always YouTube until then. There’s just something so uncomplicated and essential about their romance. It’s like watching magnets find each other and delight at their mutual and unmistakable attraction. Oh, WayHaught, come back. Come back now. Is it spring yet?

Haught Wave

Hey, guys. Remember when I said y’all should be watching “Wynonna Earp?” Y’ALL SHOULD BE WATCHING WYNONNA EARP! The show has become my Friday night treat. It’s a heavenly little slice of hot (and Haught, but more on that later) lady bad-assery in a sea of shows with mediocre males believing in their own exceptionalism. Also there are demons and witches and one big honking gun. All in all, it’s a good time for everybody.

But, you ask, what about The Gay? Oh, kittens. Let me tell you about the delicious, delicious slow-burn gayness. Remember when I told you Wynonna’s sister met this nice lady deputy named – and I kind you not - Officer Haught? Remember? Well, things have gone to wet T-shirts and lady flirting to eye sex and gay unicorns and now (spoilers, spoilers if you plan to watch the show) so much more. Yes, Virginia, WayHaught is happening.

Look, I don’t want to tell you how to run your DVR. But if you aren’t recording “Wynonna Earp” you’re doing it wrong.

And if that won’t convince you, please allow this to do the trick. (Though, if I – or the above gif – have already convinced to watch the show, don’t watch and savor the oh-so-slow burn of WayHaught). For everyone else who is already watching, well, no harm in watching again is there?
