Reunited And It Feels So, So, So Good

The saying is three makes a trend. So three favorite female former co-stars reuniting in real life is a trend that brings three times the joy for our little shipper hearts. Last month in March, appropriately Women’s History Month, we were treated to a trio of reunions of lovely ladies who were once onscreen colleagues.

First there was Stephanie March and Mariska Hargitay, who reunited on the set of “Law & Order: SVU.” Stephanie, a.k.a. ADA Alex Cabot, is reprising her role as a guest star in an episode this month. Alex and Olivia back together again? Yes, all the pleases.

Then there was Simone Lahbib and Mandana Jones of “Bad Girls” fame. Now, admittedly, I never got into the late 1990s, early 2000s series. But I certainly watched Nikki ad Helen fanvids. And I certainly know how much the sight of them here, as if still together after all these years, warms so many hearts.

And finally, how can you not love seeing Bo-Bo and Lil Mama back together again? Anna Silk and Ksenia Solo had a lunch reunion last week and it made me miss “Lost Girl” all over again. I miss all those lovely humans sharing a screen together, I really do.

Tank Top Tuesday

Sometimes, many times, all the time, I get nostalgic for the simpler times when all it took to make me happy was a woman in a white tank top. All the horrible in the world seems so close to the surface now. But, you know what, they make take away our health care, but they’ll never take our joy at a lady in white tank top. Not now, not ever. I mean, just look at Janelle. Look at her. Yeah, I feel better already. Enjoy.

Constance Wu

Jessica Huang continues to be one of the best characters on television. Period. (But real period, not like Sean Spicer period.)

Ksenia Solo

I miss Kenzi and Hot Pants and Bo-Bo, oh my.

Jessie Graff

If I was going to start a real-life superhero lady squad I would put Sally Yates and Jessie Graff on my starting lineup.

Chrissy Teigen

My love for her ages like fine wine. It gets richer, deeper, and still gets you drunk.

Vacation Vixen: Ksenia Solo

Oh my goodness, do I miss me some Lil Mama. Kenzi will go down in the pantheon of Best TV BFFs. Not only was Mackenzie Malikov funny and loyal, she was brave and smart and no one did a Russian accent better, no one. Also, she didn’t look bad in a tank top. Not bad at all. I know Ksenia has since moved on to the series “Turn: Washington's Spies” (which has its final season this year). And she also has some movies ready to come out. But to me, no matter what, she’ll always be the Kenziest Kenzi. And I remember her Kenzisms always.

Things That Make You Go Squeee

New trailer! New trailer! NEW TRAILER! Yes, I realize we’re going to start getting a lot more of these as Sept. 6 steamrolls our way. But while they still feel fresh and new here is what I have to say about this one.

1) I’ll never be tired of seeing Kenzi again. Mark, not so much.

2) Hey, look, Tamsin is alive. And so is Linda Hamilton/Acacia.

3) Each time I see him he adds such a weird, yet also welcome B-movie vibe. I can’t explain it, really.

4) *unintelligible squealing sounds*

Some thoughts? That is, if you can do more than squeal.

Last Girl

Oh, yes. Oh, no. No, but also yes. Yes, but also no. It’s the beginning of the for-real end of “Lost Girl.” I can’t really express my feelings. I’m excited to see how this story ends. I’m so sad this story had to end. So sad. Still not over it. But, alas, chin up. We soldier on. And we’ll analyze on as well with the very first new trailer for the final episodes. So let’s dive right in with six off-the-cuff reactions to the new footage.

1) The last eight episodes all take part in a discotheque?

2) Who knew Greek gods wore Vera Bradley?

3) Imma miss that overuse of eyeliner, I really am.

4) If Dyson gets to meet dad, Lauren better, too. Or, wait, maybe not – all things considered.

5) KENZI! KENZI! KENZI!

6) Is that Elektra?

7) Bo + Kenzi + Big Grassy Field = Guaranteed Epicness.

p.s. Don’t worry, I totally realize all that Lauren and Tamsin footage is old. Sneaky, sneaky, Showcase.

Sapphire is a Girl's Best Friend

To quote Keanu Reeves in every movie he’s ever been in, “Whoa.” Like, “Whoa, ‘Orphan Black.’ You’re, like, blowing my damn mind.” Now I know I – and many of you – went into this season with a certain amount of trepidation. Boy clones, really? How could adding a bunch of same-faced dudes to a show that has so stalwartly been about women – sisters, at that – and their fight to determine their owns lives possibly make things better?

Well, the answer is they couldn’t. But the good news is they haven’t had to. Because the boy clones – while present – have largely been just another obstacle for our seestras to overcome. And, the even better news, is the boy clones haven’t had nearly as much screen time as I had worried. (It helps that a couple of them got killed off pretty quickly, too.) This, again, is good because Ari Millen, you’re no Tatiana Maslany. Not by a long shot.

Anyway. This was not what made me go “Whoa.” What made me go “Whoa” – or, more accurately, “Whooooooa” – was Shay. Like, “Whoooooa. Hellooooo, Shay.” If you’re a fan of Ksenia Solo (and if you’re not, what’s wrong with you) you already love her because, duh, Kenzi. But now you’ll love, love her as Shay. Granted, the whole holistic healer thing is a little too moonbeam and crystals for me. But, hey, who doesn’t love a gal who is good with her hands? Amirite? I’m right.

Granted, I have no idea where this whole Shay/Cosima thing is going. (Also is Shaysima really their portmanteau? Because, meh.) She could turn out to be yet another terrifying twist in this crazy clonespiracy. But right now, I like it. I like it a lot. They’ve got chemistry, which for both a scientist and a TV couple is key. And, damn, these two gals have it. Their chemistry is like a Bunsen burner on full boil. How many times did you rewind that scene? Come on, don’t lie. This is for science.

Look, I love Delphine, obviously. But, first and foremost, I want Cosima to be happy. And right now, this Shay girl? Whoa, does she have lots of happy, happy potential.

Also, after watching Ksenia dance (like, literally in “Black Swan”) around roles in projects with other plenty of queer female characters, it’s nice to see her play one for a chance. Like really nice. Like, whoa.

p.s. How many lesbians desperately searched the app store for Sapphire so they could find their very own Shay after this episode? Come on, don’t lie. Again, for science.

Laugh Girls

Hey, America. Better late than never, eh? So Syfy FINALLY announced the start of “Lost Girl” Season 5 here in the states. Damn, network, why you gotta make a gal wait like that. They’ll start airing the first eight episodes of the fifth and final season April 12 on Syfy. Of course our Canadian friends – and those of us who like to pretend we’re Canadian – started watching last Decmeber and have been waiting patiently for more since the end of January. No word on when the second half will air, either in the U.S. or Canada. Way back when the first season was announced they said it would air in “Fall 2015,” so I’m guessing October or November. *harumpf sound* But, hey, this is still good news for everyone here who likes to watch things old (and legal) school. Ahem. I think I might have to rewatch, because just watching that video of these crazy kids being crazy makes me all nostalgic. Come back, Lost Girls (and a few of the guys), come back.

Vacation Vixen: Lost Girls

Oh, you crazy Lost girls (and honorary Lost girl, Dyson). I love you, but I can’t believe you’re making me recap during my vacation. I do this because I love you. (New recaps up at AfterEllen each week, hint, hint.)

p.s. Holy shit, last night's episode. Kittens, do we need to taaaaaalk.

p.p.s. Oh, hey, I am well aware Bo and Tamsin are bisexual and I am quite happy about it. So when I called them "such lesbians" in the context of the recap it was as a joking term of endearment that could be applied to anyone - women who love women or men or both and/or men who love women or men or both. It was referring to their processing, which is a trait often ascribed to lesbians. It was not an official declaration of how I identify them or how they identify themselves. It was a joke, which I like to do in my recaps and hope we all like to do with each other as friends. Precise language is important, but the ability to have a sense of humor about and enjoy each other and our community is also important. And now back to my vacation, which I continue to recap during because, again, I love you.

Vacation Vixen: Tatiana Maslany & Ksenia Solo

I can’t even with these two. I can’t wait to see our little Kenzi on screen with Cosima. Can’t. Wait. Can’t.

Tank Top Tuesday: Lost Girl Edition

Happy “Lost Girl” recaps are back day! Well, happy hopefully for you. Sleep deprived for me. But in a good way, a very good way. So what better way to celebrate than with tank tops! So many tank tops. “Lost Girl” is back. The ladies of “Lost Girl” are back! The Boobs O’Clock of the ladies of “Lost Girl” are back! Life doesn’t succubus suck.

Anna Silk

Does she need a gun, wherever she is?

Emmanuelle Vaugier

More Morrigan this season. MOAR!

Ksenia Solo

So many Kenzism, so little time.

Rachel Skarsten

I bet she is just dealing with the insurance claim from her wrecked truck. Yeah, that’s what she is doing.

Zoie Palmer

Melting lesbians’ ice creams since 1977. Though, gurl, that hair.

p.s. Pop over to AfterEllen later today to check out my latest recap.

Tank Top Tuesday: Lost Girl Edition

Lost Girl is over for the season. Long live Lost Girl. For a thorough and comprehensive recap of the finale (which many of you oh-so-patient U.S. viewers finally got to watch last night), check out my episode recap on AfterEllen here.

There’s so much we’ll miss over these long, long, too long, months between the show’s return (late 2013 for Canada, early 2014 for the US – sigh). Bo’s blue and brown eyes. Lauren’s sly downcast smirk. Tamsin’s constant “bitch, please” face. Every single Kenzism. The Boobs O’Clock. So as a grateful shout-out to the Lost Girl costume department for never letting us girls (or those girls) down, an ode to the tank tops of Season 4. Like a snowflake, each one is special in her own way. I’ll refrain from making a joke about catching them on your tongue. Ahem.

Lauren’s Greatest Not-Quite Tanks

My Weekend Crush

Man, do I like a funny lady. I like a whip-smart, razor-sharp, lightening-quick funny lady who can cut a man twice her size down to a bloody stub with her precision word jujitsu. In fact, I particularly like it when the lady doing the dismantling one is a little lady. Because size truly doesn't matter, well, except maybe brain size. And one of my current favorite fierce, funny little ladies is Ksenia Solo. Her delightful Kenzi on “Lost Girl” is not only the Kenziest Kenzi, but she’s also a fantastic friend and foil to the big-hearted Bo. She’s the worldly grifter, the loyal friend, the practical survivor. And she’s just fucking funny. Much of this has to do with her comic timing, which is excellent. But also it’s how she throws her entire tiny frame into her work. As evidence of how much she brings to the role, by far the worst episode of the second season so far was the Kenzi-less one. Sure, there was no Dr. Hotpants either. But it was that very special Kenzi zing that was missing most. That sweet, sweet sass was sorely lacking. And, yes, you could also take the “s” off of “sass” and it would be true that that was missed last week, too. In short, Ksenia and her crystal-clear blue eyes helps put the guuuurl in “Lost Girl.” Too much? I can’t help it. I got temporarily hypnotized by those iceberg blues. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. Raise you hand if you also recognize Ksenia as Veronica, the real (not imagined, hysterical nervous breakdown hallucination) rival dancer to Natalie Portman’s Nina in “Black Swan.” Looks different without bangs, eh?
