My Weekend Crush

The lens of time tends to be the ultimate arbiter of history – both the profound and the personal. So, isn’t it interesting to watch the famous go from the hero to the goat to the new definition of GOAT within the short confines of less than a lifetime.

Mention the name Jane Fonda and depending on the era you knew her best from, you’d get widely differing opinions. Movie superstar. Sex symbol. Leftie radical. Commie traitor. Fitness guru. Feminist advocate. Climate warrior. And, now, a woman who has proven throughout her long and storied career tried to always stand on the right side of history and expanded her definitions to keep including and centering more people in the fight for equality. (Like, respect each person’s personal pronouns, it’s not hard to do. And the right thing to do.)

Whether she is schooling the mainstream media what today’s celebrities should be saying when they say “gay rights” BACK in 1979.

Of course she was right, the side of the angels keeps winning. Sure it took 36 years for marriage equality and 41 years for employment non-discrimination, and we’re still fighting for everything else. But, as Jane knows, we’ll get there.

See Jane. See Jane get on the right side of history. Be like Jane. Happy safe, healthy and Jane Fonda-level righteous weekend, all.

My Weekend Crush

There has never been any question that Jane Fonda is a badass. She’s been a badass since, well...looks up date of her famous anti-Vietnam War era mugshot. While she was vilified back then for taking a stand, it’s abundantly clear that our Jane remains on the right side of history.

Now she’s taking a stand and getting arrested to protest government inaction on climate change. And we’re not just taking putting a bumper sticker on her car or writing a strongly worded letter to her congressperson. No, this month Jane moved to Washington D.C. to lead weekly demonstrations. Basically, every Friday through January Jane and other protesters (and a few famous friends) are getting arrested in what they’re calling Fire Drill Fridays. Basically, she’s acting like our house is on fire because, you know, it is.

Anyway, last week instead of going to the British Academy Britannia Awards to accept BAFTA’s Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, she got arrested. But, like the badass she is, Jane managed to accept the award anyway - just from cuffs while getting hauled away by cops. Legends only, kittens, legends only. Happy weekend, all.

SGALGG: Oscars Edition

I told you it was coming. Though, considering all the LGBTQ moments this year, it seems the Gay Gals are getting jealous of all the Straight Gals acting like them. Sunday’s ceremony showcased the wonderful talent of the out queer female nominees, attendees and winners. Like Daniela Vega who became the first openly transgender person to ever present at the Oscars. And we haven’t even touched on Olympic skater Adam Rippon’s tuxedo harness. Besides all the really, really gay, the awards had a lot of straight women holding hands because they love throwing off our collective gaydar. Like I feel like they’re trying to make SGALGG now; how else can you explain the huge cuddle puddle that all the losing best actress nominees made together? Exactly. Also, I’m pretty sure one of the winners thanked his cats. I even rewound to make sure my ears hadn’t translated it to lesbian.

So here are some of the rest of the great SGALGG & GGALGG moments of the night.

Jane Fonda & Helen Mirren

I would watch this rom-com about two ladies who find love later in life.

Emily Blunt & Guest

News Flash: Mary Poppins is practically gay in every way.

Gal Gadot & Lupita Nyong'o

Themyscira meets Wakanda.

Gal Gadot & Margot Robbie

Fine, Wonder Woman has a thing for disgraced figure skaters too.

Laura Dern & Greta Gerwig

Look, I told you I wasn’t kidding about the hand holding.

Also, these two totally continued off stage.

Everyone Wants to Touch Meryl

Viola does.

Nicole definitely does.

J-Law is just being greedy.

Jennifer Lawrence & Salma Hayek

See, greedy.

Lupita Nyong’o & Danai Gurira

Wakanda forever, indeed.

Octavia Spencer & Sally Hawkins

I would have rather she wound up with Octavia than the fish, to be honest.

Janelle Monae

Obligatory Janelle post.

And now for the GGALGGs to show them how it’s really done.

Jodie Foster & Frances McDormand

Crutches won’t slow her down.

p.s. Yes, Jodie is a tiny little garden gnome compared to J-Law, and most people really.

Rachel Morrison & Rachel Garza

The first woman ever to be nominated for best cinematography and her wife on the red carpet. Yeah, that sounds nice.

Dee Rees & Sarah M. Broom

And out filmmaker Dee, who hired Rachel in the first place, brought her wife with her on the red carpet. Also sounds so nice.

Darla K. Anderson

The out Coco producer thanked her wife, and her producing partner thanked his husband.

Kimberly Peirce, Evren Savci & Emily Blunt

I mean, hitting on Emily in front to your wife is bold. But, perhaps she’s on her “list.” And she saw all her hand holding business from before, so gave it a shot.

See Jane, Really See Jane

Hi Kittens. I just felt like dropping in a little reality check about this business we call show. I started this blog more than 10 years ago to chit-chat about the effervescent delights of pop culture through the lens of this rather opinionated gay gal. Over the years I’ve also delved into current events, LGBTQ rights, feminist issues and the hellscape of politics (particularly this current and pressing Trump-shaped hellscape). But it’s also good, sometimes, to step back and laugh. Now, perhaps, more than ever.

So please allow Jane Fonda’s Instagram to remind us that celebrity is, and will always be, a beautiful illusion we’ve all bought into to distract us from make the mundane realities of everyday life.

Here is the quintessential before-and-after truth of Jane at last fall’s LA Museum of Modern Art Gala.

Women of a Certain...

Look, I’m naturally going to be interested any show with two female leads. I’m naturally going to be interested in a show with Lily Tomlin as one of those female leads. And, you know, Jane Fonda is no slouch either. So when I heard about the new Netflix series “Grace & Frankie” I was thrilled. Like, seriously, how fun. And then there was the LGBT aspect with the husbands of Grace (that’s Jane) and Frankie (that’s Lily) coming out as gay and in love with each other (they’re played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, respectively).

And the trailer looks fun, too. Like a Nora Ephron turned into a full-length series. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch Lily and Jane rib each other. The only way it could be better is if these two ladies fell in love, too. Late-in-life coming outs for everyone!

While normally I would be a little cranky about a show as unabashedly about rich white folks as “Grace & Frankie” seems to be, I think given the other unprecedented nature of this series I can cut it some slack. I really can’t think of another TV show centered around septuagenarian women. Can you? Women of a certain age so very rarely get the spotlight. “The Golden Girls” was about a group of women in their 60s (in fact Estelle Getty’s Sophia was actually a year younger than her “daughter” Bea Arthur). “Hot in Cleveland” is mostly about women in their 50s and 60s – and Betty White, bless her heart. So a show about two broads in their 70s, yeah, that makes me pretty happy.

This is the beauty of choice. Subscription streaming services like Netflix and Hulu – and the expansion of cable offerings – have helped broadened the field. We can have shows about women of all ages and colors in prison, a trans parent and her adult children, a doomsday cult survivor and her new actor, dancer, homosexual roommate. I could go on. And that makes me very, very happy.
