Music Monday: Kehlani Edition

There’s a reason Shane and Kehlani hooked up. And if you watch this video, you know why. In fact, Shane should be so lucky. The out queer performer is back with a new song featuring none other than Missy freaking Elliott. And a rainbow! Is the object of Kehlani’s affection left a little intentionally ambiguous? Maybe. But, hey, the straights need to feel included too, I guess. But honestly, who cares. Because Kehlani is looking more than Shane today. And that’s what really matters. What? It’s Pride, it’s homophobic to not allow us to (respectfully) objectify each other. Happy Monday, kittens.

Tank Top Tuesday

You know what always lifts my spirits? Hot women in tank tops, duh. And if all those women happen to be very, very queer? Even better. Now, I tend to have a liberal interpretation of…well, most everything – but especially what constitutes a tank top. So please enjoy my interpretation of some very hot, talented folks going sleeveless however they damn please. As it should be.

Ani DiFranco

This might be a muscle shirt. Still counts.

Tessa Thompson

This might be attached to the bottoms and definitely has a hole cut out of the side. Still counts.

Kristen Kish

This is a vest. You already know vests still count.

Towa Bird

So, it only tracks that leather vests clearly count.

Renee Rapp

Like I wasn’t gonna post Renee after posting Towa. Also, sports bras have counted since the beginning.

Kehlani

Whatever this is, yes. Count it.

Real Ballers

As you’re no doubt well aware, I’m not much of a sportsball fan. (Except the Olympics, I’ve always loved the Olympics even though they continue to be problematic.) I attribute my dislike for sports, especially pro sports, to my dislike for most men’s sports. But, duh, there is also women’s professional sports. And I feel it’s my queer duty to begin cheering on more women’s professional teams. Thanks to my newfound reinterest in basketball (I’m from Indiana, after all, land of “Hoosiers”) I watched a few of last week’s opening games for the WNBA. And, can I just say, I feel like you all have been holding out on me on how hot these players are. Respectfully, of course. I mean it respectfully when I say they are ridiculously HOT. Don’t worry, my next step will be to check Autostraddle and Outsports to see who all the queer folx are. You know, for scientific purposes. I am also now pretty darn excited that the Bay Area will have one of the new expansion teams. As a Northern California gal, it will be the closest team to me. And you can’t beat their announcement. Valkyries? Narrated by Kehlani? Oh yeah, they know their audience.

p.s. After I tweeted about all the players’ hotness, I was rightfully rebuked for not paying attention sooner. My only excuse is I was a WNBA fan back in the day – right after they launched. I even went to a couple Sacramento Monarchs games. But then the team dissolved, and well, you gotta have someone to root for. Valkyries are cooler than Monarchs, anyway.

Pre-L: “Last to Know” (304)

It’s High Gay Holiday season on TLW: GQ, which means it’s the Halloween episode. Honestly, I can’t remember. Has The L Word ever had a Halloween episode? Or costumes? I mean, they made a music video with Snoop Dogg, but dress up like an avocado? I mean I remember Jell-O wrestling and circus tent trauma. But not Halloween.

1. Pleated high-waisted jeans? Haven’t lesbians suffered enough for fashion?

2. If she can’t end up with Tasha, I approve of this very much instead.
3. The original L Word did Max dirty and we all know it. So this is a welcome mea culpa. Welcome back, Daniel.
4. If I was Dani, I would have hidden my Latina Lesbian Zoe Kravitz bestie from my friends for three years, too.
5. Like, I would have remembered if they had costumes like this in the past. I’m pretty sure.
6. They named her Taylor because of all the lesbian Swifties, right?
7. Dude, you pissed in your girlfriend’s ex-fiancée’s hallway. Maybe ease up on the judging. But the James Dean/Rebel Without a Cause look is one many a lesbian should steal next Halloween.
8. Breakups are hard, yo. Honestly, we all could just use a really good hug. I get it.
9. We stan a realistic, age-appropriate relationship.
10. This felt…right. It actually felt right. More shows should apologize for their past problematic storylines on air.
11. Whereas this? Oh, Shane.

TV Review: TLW:GQ Season 3 So Far

Right, so maybe it was the two gummies I took. Or maybe I’m just getting soft in my advanced age. But, um, I rather enjoyed the first four episodes of the new season of “The L Word: Generation Q.” Like, don’t get me wrong, they gloss over a whole bunch of things to stutter time jump us forward a year. But then this ridiculous show does what this ridiculous show does best – is make us invest in these characters in spite of their actions and our better judgement.

So, yes, here we go betting sucked RIGHT BACK IN to TiBette despite it being basically settled law for the last 13 years now. But whatever, bam, we’re right back in it.

I think (and, again, it could have been the two gummies) what has made the new season more engaging so far is that instead of chasing whatever all-caps PLOT the show was determined to shoehorn into its seasons – be that breast cancer awareness or corporate culpability in the opioid epidemic (I know, when you write it out it’s still like whaaaaat, ok show, lol) or conservative crusades against artistic expression to addiction (to be fair, they’ve taken quite a few swings at this one, but they really went there with the hall pissing scene so there’s that) – they just let the stories happen.

Instead of all of whatever all that (point to previous paragraph)is , the relationships drive the plots and honestly it’s for the best. Granted because of our uneven investment in the various couples, some of those storylines have more impact than others. But I appreciate that the writers have, at least for now, allowed its stories to grow more organically.

[Spoilers for upcoming episodes]

And, besides some obvious stunt castings (Kehlani as Shane’s latest side chick is, well, good for Kate Moennig), the new season has brought some pleasant surprises with its guest stars so far. One, they’re having Alice date Joey Lauren Adams (who queer ladies of a certain age will no doubt have a soft spot for thanks to repeated watchings of “Chasing Amy” – don’t judge it was slim pickings back in the 90s), which is age appropriate casting at its finest. And two, they brought back Max (Daniel Sea), and acknowledged – even if a tad in passing – the shittiness of the original show’s trans storylines. What they made Max endure were truly, truly shameful. An on-screen apology is the least they could do, honestly.

Oh, and I hate – hatehatehatehate – the storyline they’re giving Angie. Hate it. HATE. But then, that’s what happens when this show decides they want to tackle an “issue” instead of just letting relationships make sense.

Oh, oh, and while I am complaining is this another show that has wasted Margaret Cho’s talents on a way too small part without much consequence? Shame bell, shame bell. (The other one was “Hacks,” so shame bells all around.)

So, how did everyone like the premiere? Hopes for the new season? Because I don’t get Showtime anymore, are they still releasing episodes each week? Do you want Pre-Ls? Or just an endless stream of TiBette caps? Can you believe we’ve been talking about “The L Word” together since before Twitter was even born? Did I mention I took two gummies before starting the new season? Because, yeah.

September's Non-SGALGG SGALGG

So OK, so as promised I found a couple fun SGALGG images from last month’s big swanky shindigs: The Met Gala, Emmy Awards and Tony Awards. And by “fun,” I mean “gay.” And by “gay” I mean, “Yep, they’re gay.” So here are the Not Straight Gals Acting Like Gay Gals, and their straight-ish friends, from all of September’s fancy functions. We’re here, we’re queer – we look amazing on the red carpet.

MET GALA

Tessa Thompson & Zoe Kravitz

Sorry, Janelle. You’ve got competition.

Megan Rapinoe

Now that’s something to salute.
And, uh, same Megan when it comes to holding Venus William’s dress.

Cara Delevingne

Sadly the Shane of Celebrity Lesbianism stole this slogan from a POC creator.

Elliot Page

I truly love and am so happy for Elliot, but I think we can all also agree this suit doesn’t fit and he would look much hotter in something nicely tailored. What, I can’t help a dude out sometimes?

Kristen Stewart, Zoe Kravitz & Cara Delevingne

This is like a lesbian Renaissance painting, K-Stew reaching out and Cara watching out.

Kehlani & SZA

Like, the hand holding and leading her tho.

THE EMMYS

Lauren Morelli & Samira Wiley

Look at these two rays of sunshine. They’re genuinely one of the best thing to come out of “Orange Is the New Black.”

Billy Porter & Mj Rodriguez

Not to be corny but slay was made for moments like this.

Sarah Paulson & Beanie Feldstein

Just two women in relationships with other women handing out a shiny gold woman to someone.

Hannah Einbinder & Jean Smart

I think Hannah’s tux is really celebrating the fact she got to on-screen smooch Jean. I mean, I’d wear a tux too if I achieved such an accomplishment.

Gillian Anderson 1997 & Gillian Anderson 2021

What a difference 24 years makes, or doesn’t make.

THE TONYS

Kristin Chenoweth & Idina Menzel

Not actually gay, but dammit if these witches don’t get me every time.

Mary-Louise Parker

Also not gay, but it’s Ruth dammit.

Lauren Patton & Guest

So Lauren (b&w suit) is gay. But also her show is controversial Dammit.

Bernadette Peters

Fine, not gay but an ICON. And, uh, this is how she looks at 73. So, please don’t swallow your tongue. Damn.

Music Monday: Kehlani Edition

Honestly, I thought Kehlani had already come out as a lesbian. I mean, you’ve heard/seen her song “Honey,” right? But I guess she had just identified as queer and/or bisexual before – not that there’s anything wrong with that. And now she identifies as lesbian and “gay, gay, gay.” Join the club, my friend. Join the club. “Honey” is a really great song, by the way. We played it, along with as many other queers songs we could find, at our wedding reception. Happy Monday, kittens.

p.s. Oscar SGALGG (well as much as you can have in a pandemic) coming tomorrow, kittens.
