Gender Fuck Thursday: Tennis, Anyone

I guess I’m just feeling sporty this week. But what was in the water, or should I say wardrobes, at Wimbledon this year? I noticed celeb-after celeb – queer or otherwise – rocking the preppy menswear. And, I can’t help it, I kind of love it. WASPy, old money gender fuck is secretly one of my favorite categories of gender fuck. Like, damn, Jodie and Alexandra. You make me want to pitch a show called Real Lesbian Housewives of Cape Cod. Though, honestly, thanks to Ralph Lauren, everyone at Wimbledon looked like they were about to ask the unpopular girl in the handsewn dress to prom.

Jodie Foster & Alexandra Hedison

Emma Corrin
Cynthia Erivo
Nicole Kidman
Rashida Jones
Sarah Pidgeon
Right, so who above is taking you to prom? Yes, obviously, I already called dibs on Jodie. (Sorry, Alexandra, not sorry.)

Tank Top Tuesday

Look, it may well be full-on October and fall and spooky season and whatnot. But that doesn’t mean we can’t give tank tops one last nostalgic hurrah for the year. Especially if those tank tops are seasonally accessorized, à la Leisha here. I mean who doesn’t love keeping things a little corny? Bonus points because October is LGBTQ+ history month and every featured tank top belongs to a historic LGBTQ+ person. I mean, we’re all part of history technically, right?

Leisha Hailey

Sports bras count, you know this. Especially in California where it still very much feels like summer.

Emma Corrin

I used to have strong feelings about armpit hair but now honestly I can’t be arsed in the least bit over it. Also more hardcore gardening pics from celebrities, please. That’s exactly my kink.

Megan Thee Stallion

Scary long nails for spooky sapphic season? As long as they’re paired with a tank top. And, obviously, that tongue. Ahem.

Jenny Lyons

Suspenders also fall under the stapped-top-without-covered-arms tank top umbrella. Please make your fall fashion choices appropriately.

Hayley Kiyoko & Becca Tilley

Lesbian Jesus and Becca Tilley seem very happy and in love in adventurous places in tank tops. So good for them.

Laurie Hernandez

I wish the Olympics were on all the time so we could have Laurie’s wonderfully engaging gymnastic commentary all the time. Even if, uh, this top is probably not broadcast appropriate. But it is appreciated. Ahem again.

Tessa Thompson

Don’t get too excited, that’s her lil sister. But, still, you know – aesthetically, thank you to good genes.

Gender Fuck Thursday: A Tale of Two Emmas

So I confess, until shockingly recently I continued to confuse Emma D’Arcy and Emma Corrin. Sure I felt a little foolish when it finally dawned on me that these were in fact two separate actors and not the same actor. But, in my defense, they are both named Emma, they are both British, they are both non-binary, they are both blue-eyed, they are both short-haired, they are both strong-jawed, they are both experimental on the red carpet and so on – so you can see how a person could get confused. Yes, I know D’Arcy is from that dragon show (“House of the Dragon”) and Corrin is from that crown show (literally “The Crown,” lol). Though, now that I think of it, have we ever seen them in a room together? Is this a Clark Kent/Superman of nonbinary actors named Emma situation?

Killer Location

Look, I don’t know if anything gay happens in “A Murder at the End of the World.” But I do know it stars non-binary star Emma Corrin as some sort of pink-haired punk sleuth who gets invited to a billionaire’s compound at the aforementioned end of the world where, wouldn’t you know it, a murder happens. It’s helpful when they put the whole plot in the title like that. I don’t know much more about this limited series other than that Brit Marling (of the “OA”) and Joan Chen (of “Twin Peaks” and “Saving Face”) are also in it and Clive Owen (of lots of stuff, though if we’re looking for gay stuff there’s 1997’s “Bent”) plays the billionaire. Emma’s character also appears to bring their boyfriend, whose haircut I’ve seen on no fewer than half a dozen lesbians in the past year. So, you know, that’s kinda gay. Any thoughts? Feels a little “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” crossed with “The Menu” and a little “Call of the Wild.” But as long as the billionaire is the bad guy and Emma and their pink hair survive, I’m on board.

Gender Fuck Thursday: The Crown Edition

I did not watch the latest season of “The Crown” — mostly because I haven’t watched any seasons of “The Crown” except for the few random episodes I catch when I’m visiting my mom. But I heard endlessly good things about it, plus there’s Gillian Anderson and Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin. I wasn’t too familiar with Emma before the English actor was cast as Princess Diana for the show’s fourth season other than that they looked a lot like the late royal, complete with those huge blue deer eyes. But now, I’m positively curious as Emma appears to have come out as both queer and non-binary.
Last week they posted a series of shots of themselves in binders, and updated (but then perhaps deleted — they weren’t there when I looked but articles mentioned they were new in their Instagram bio) their pronouns to she/they. The binder photoshoot were in a post that read, in part:
“It’s all a journey right. Lots of twists and turns and change and that’s ok! Embrace it.”
Life’s a journey, enjoy where it takes you and you take it. Be like Lizzo and respect people’s identities.
