My Weekend Crush

Part of what makes living through this historical moment feel strange is the lack of response from so, so, so many. Yes, many dedicated activists and everyday citizens and good neighbors and decent people are holding the line and showing up when it matters. Looking especially at you, brave people of Minneapolis. But the fact that some of the most wealthy, most famous and most privileged among us have chosen to stay quiet or stick their heads in the sand? Shame. Truly, completely, shame. Now, I get it, some stars probably think it's better for celebrities to be seen and not heard. But fuck that. The stakes and realities of what this administration is doing are too high. We need everyone who can stand up to stand up. And now.

Which is why I keep highlighting those who do. Using your platform to say, “This is wrong, this is bad, this is unacceptable” seems like the very least our superstars could do at this moment. But given how few stars wore even the small, symbolic “Be Good” and “ICE out” pins were worn at the Golden Globes, we have a long, long silent road ahead.

Which is why it feels so refreshing that Billie Eilish has consistently used her platform and public appearances to register her dissent. From her acceptance speech for the MLK Jr. Beloved Community Award for Environmental Justice:

“To be honest, I really don’t feel deserving. And it’s very strange to be celebrated for working towards environmental justice at a time where it feels less achievable than ever given the state of our country and the world right now. We’re seeing our neighbors being kidnapped, peaceful protesters being assaulted and murdered, our civil rights being stripped, resources to fight the climate crisis being cut for fossil fuels and animal agriculture destroying our planet, and people’s access to food and healthcare becoming a privilege for the wealthy instead of a new basic human right for all Americans. It is very clear that protecting our planet and our communities is not a priority for this administration. And it’s really hard to celebrate that when we no longer feel safe in our own homes or in our streets.”
What’s happening right now in America is not OK. We are not OK. And we shouldn’t stop shouting it from the rooftops until everyone is OK.

Good thing I already love Billie’s music, because that right there is how you make me a fan for life. Keep fighting the good fight. Happy weekend, all.

Music Monday: More Lunch, Less Billionaires

More Billie? Why don’t mind if I do. After her billionaire call out, and in general just because she’s the coolest, here’s an encore of “Lunch” that is essentially just her dancing around on a cloud to a song she wrote about eating out women. Yeah, the world is on fire. But this, this song is also fire. Happy Monday, kittens.

My Weekend Crush

This. THHHHHIIIIIIIIIIISSSSS. I want a lot more, “Ew, billionaires,” from a lot more people in this era of obscene wealth hoarding. So here’s to the Hannah Einbinders and Hayley Williamses and Billie Eilishes of the world who are saying what needs to be said in these dark times for so many. That the few (i.e. the Billionaire Class and their enablers) can continue to rule over the lives of the many continues to be the biggest con of our society. So, thanks, Billie for not letting a chance to call out Mark Zuckerberg (who was in the audience when she picked up the WSJ’s Music Innovator award last week) in person pass. Why are you a billionaire is a truly excellent questions. Eat the rich, is all I’m saying. And, given this week’s election results, I’m clearly not the only one. Happy weekend, all.

The Gay Grammys, Again

Well, in case you missed last Sunday’s Grammy awards show, I can summarize it for you simply. The gals and the gays, particularly the gay gals, stole the show – again. I don’t know what it means to have two good Grammy shows in consecutive years (I mean, who would be surprised by an apocalypse at this point, honestly?) Last year we had Tracy Chapman and Brandi Carlile and boygenius (and Joni Mitchell, for the straights). This year we have Chappell Roan and Billie Eilish and Cynthia Erivo and Janelle Monae and Lady Gaga and Doechii and St. Vincent and Brittany Howard and Queen Latifah – am I missing any queer ladies, ladies? (Don’t worry, the straights had Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX and Raye and Shakira, if you’re into that sort of thing.)

And it was the women – gay and straight – who not only stole the show with their performances, but also with their show of solidarity against all the horrors of our current political/societal hellscape. Like Chappell speaking out to shame record companies into paying its developing artists a liveable wage and health insurance. Or Doechii speaking out to support Black women and dark-skinned Black women in particular. Or Shakira speaking out to send her solidarity to all the immigrants. Or Lady Gaga speaking out to say trans and queer people deserve love and support. Or Alicia Keyes speaking out to praise the power and beauty of diversity and inclusion.

Also special props to Janelle for speaking out to drag Nelly for performing at that Orange Turd’s inauguration at the Grammys afterparties. Ladies and gentlemen and every other gender identity which absolutely exists, this is exactly the energy we expect from our most celebrated artists right now.

It’s a refreshing change from the Golden Globes, which was relatively free of high-profile political statements. Granted, that was 15 days before the horrors of Orange Turd’s 2.0 administration began. But, shit, if we didn’t all know this was coming – at least if we were paying attention.

Anyway, I wish I could share some of these performances but in one of those truly genius corporate titan moves, you can only find the concert videos on the Grammys websites and not even all of them either. Now if the Grammys would just stop having Trevor Noah host, because I find the way he roams through the audience making celebrity smalltalk extremely cringe – as the young folks say. Also treating the return of The Weeknd to the Grammys like the second-coming of Martin Luther King Jr? Even more cringe. See, this is why you leave hosting, and everything else, to the gays gals from now on, Grammys.

Santa Weirdo

Anyone having holiday anxiety and similarly convinced that they ever actually met The Big Guy they’d also make it weird? Though, as a single gay woman, I think if a strange man in a red suit carrying a sack showed up in my living room in the middle of the night I would probably freak out and do a lot more than make it weird. So I commend fellow gaymos Kate McKinnon and Billie Eilish on keeping it just weird with Santa. Happy Christmas Eve, ya weirdos.

Music Monday: Charli & Billie

So we begin this week in our post-Olympics haze with no more athletic hotties to ogle cheer. (Sad, sexy trombone.) Luckily, The collaboration between pop girlies Charli xcx and Billie Eilish has produced one of the more randy songs of the summer in a summer practically brimming with randy songs. How randy? Like climbing up a literal mountain of women’s underwear randy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Get it, girls. I’ve just really enjoyed watching Billie Eilish blossom into her queerness this year. And when I say “blossom,” I mean hornily celebrate in the gayest way possible.

First "Lunch," now Charli likes boys, but she knows I'd hit it? Check off crushing/hitting on your straight girl friends from Billie’s Queer Rites of Passage 101 list. If she hasn’t already received her toaster oven in the mail, she’s owed a second one just for that line. Also, lest we forget, Charli was the one who jump started the Kamalanomenon when she declared Kamala brat. Gay and politically aware? Yeah, I’d hit it. Happy Monday, kittens.

Music Monday: Lunch Pride

Please, like I wasn’t going to post the official music video for “Lunch” to kick off Pride Month? It’s like you don’t even know me at all. I’m so tickled to be witnessing Billie Ellish’s horny baby gay era. Like, can you imagine the, um, buffet she is no doubt being offered right now? Eat up, sweetie. We’re all rooting for you. Happy Pride, kittens!

Music Monday: Lunch Date

Truly, I am so impatient for this song to drop. Like, come on Billie, stop teasing. Give us our LUNCH! It’s been more than four weeks since Billie Eilish gave us a tiny taste of her latest and definitely gayest work yet while at Coachella Gaychella. Anyway, Billie seems to be fully thriving since coming out. And I will impatiently continue to wait for it while we also wait for her new album “Hit Me Hard & Soft” to come out May 17. Lunch date? Let’s hope. Happy Monday, kittens.

p.s. Look, she is even officially teasing us. Drop. Your. Lunch. Girl.

You Ain't Nothing But a (Lesbian) Horndog

Since we’re talking about queer music this week already, can we talk for a moment about how horny gay pop has become? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Quite the contrary. But between Chappell Roan, Renee Rapp and now Billie Eilish things have gotten truly explicit. Again, not that there’s anything wrong with that. We become accustomed to plenty of songs about love and longing and even lust over the years. But the horniness now? Well, it’s on another level. And good for them. Really, and truly, being Horny on Main has been the domain of straight stars for too long. So whether it’s Chappell saying she wants to “get freaky, get kinky…make this bed get squeaky” or Renee with all the pretty girls with their “hand between my thighs” or Billie saying “I could eat that girl for lunch” we’re living through unprecedentedly horny times for us gay gals. But, lest we forget, we’ve always been horny. We’ve just never had the starpower we’re experiencing now. So, on this Hump Day, please appreciate the foremother of horny lesbian pop stars, Melissa Ferrick. Like, I love Chappell and Renee and Billie et al. But you gotta tip your cap to the power “Drive” still has 24 damn years later. All night, baby.

p.s. Melissa is hilarious when performing this live, FYI. And, well, humor is hot. So, uh. Look, we’re all a little horny here today. So own it.

Oscars SGALGG & GGALGG

How about them Oscars? I thought they were…fine. Truly, really fine. There were some nice moments. I enjoyed the past winners introducing each of the acting nominees. I liked Ken. I love love LOVED seeing Jodie Foster and her wife Alexandra Hedison attending their first Oscars together. But first, we start with the Straight Gals Acting Like Gay Gays, per ritual.

Annette Bening, Emma Stone & Lily Gladstone

Best Actress Cuddle Puddle

Regina King & Danielle Brooks

Shooting your shot on the red carpet.

Jamie Lee Curtis & Lupita Nyong'o

I included this photo because omfg Lupita’s back muscles.

Florence Pugh

I included this photo because omfg Flo’s everything.

Kerry Washington & Sandra Oh

If Kerry wanted to become an international assassin who falls in love/obsession with Sandra, I would watch that – but tell them to stay away from boat decks.

Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence & Sally Fields

Emma went May-December on her backstage makeouts.

America Ferrera & Gay Gals

I would watch an alternate universe Barbie where America’s Gloria runs off with Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie.
I would also watch an alternate universe Barbie where America was Barbie and Billie Eilish was Ken.
I would watch America, Lena Waithe and Cynthia Erivo read the phone book, among other things.

And the Best Lesbian Oscars Photo Goes To

Jodie and her wife Alexandra and Brandi Carlile & her wife Catherine Shepherd together at the Oscars after parties. Sometimes, it really does get better.

Good Night, Country

Yep, I’m still into this show. Yep, I’m also disappointed that the past beef between Jodie Foster’s Danvers and Kali Reis’s Navarro has seemingly nothing to do with a lesbians lover’s quarrel. Like, who are we kidding? This is 2023. Even straight people read Navarro and Danvers as uber queer. I mean, Chief D could still be a real fuck boy (and, you know, bit of an asshole) if she was queer - plus it would just make more sense. But we did at least get the reveal that Navarro used to, at least some point in the past, date girls. Well, according to Danvers. So, you know, here's hoping. And they’re keeping things interesting and spooky (and increasingly spookier) and without any standard-issue macho posturing. At least there’s that. Plus, who can resist the opening theme? Between the prospect of Navarro (possibly) going back to girls, Danvers’s queer daughter and using “Bury a Friend” by newly minted queer icon (and Grammy winner) Billie Eilish, I will take whatever gay wins we can get from this show. (But, again, make it gay, you cowards.) And this song, yeah, now that’s how you do interesting and spooky...and gay.

Purrfect Pairing

You know what else helps those January Doldrums? Gay Cat Ladies, duh. In case you missed it amid the holiday hustle and bustle, here is Kate McKinnon and Billie Eilish as the latest Whiskers R We cat rescue workers/long-lost mother-daughter. And, obviously, the apple and fashion sense and sexual orientation doesn’t fall far from the tree. Favorite Outfit: Embroidered floral T-shirts! Favorite movie: “Tar” starring Lydia Tar! Celeb Crush: Mariska Hargitay! Yep, they’re Mother-Daughter Gay…played by actual gays. You love to see it.

My Weekend Holiday Crush

Well, isn’t this lovely? Please enjoy this little seasonal lullaby. Billie Eilish is one of those artists who just keeps getting better, and no not just because she’s officially family now. But because she’s extremely talented and able to convey the most delicate to most bombastic emotions with a vulnerable magnetism. And, Billie – darling, we of course caught that, “Make the yuletide gay.” Whenever you want to drop that holiday album, we’ll be there. Have yourself a merry little whatever you celebrate this weekend, all.

Home on the Farm

Look, I knew Kate McKinnon returning to SNL for the first time to host would be good. I did not expect it would be Lesbian Tampon Farmers good. But how can you resist when it brings us Kate McEthridge (see what I did there?) together with Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Billie Eilish as fellow tampon farmers (also I see you, Paula Pell, getting in on the lesbian jokes). From the acoustic guitars to the muscle shirts, it’s a gay folk singer chef’s kiss. Kate’s SNL was also the queer female comic equivalent of those get you a gal who can do both memes. From Crunchy Granola Dyke to Marlene Dietrich stan. What can’t Kate do?

Music Monday: Billie Edition

Billie Eilish came out as “attracted to (women) for real” in a Variety interview last week. It was another one of those casual, yes sincere, admissions that reminds you the Time magazine coming out cover stories days are likely behind us for good. This comes despite the article’s not-so-subtle reference to it being an admission that “a stadium-selling artist from a different era” would require “record-label ruminations about the effect it could have on her career.” And while maybe in that different era I would be cranky about a star not going the direct “Yep, I’m Gay” route, I think what today’s crop of younger just as queer stars shows the natural evolution of coming out. It’s less “Yep” and more “Of Course.” And that is awesome in its own way. Also, it gives “What Was I Made For,” her beautiful existential lullaby, even more resonance. Happy Monday, kittens.

Love-ish Thy Neighbor

May this be a cautionary tale. Don’t invite your racist and/or anti-Semitic and/or sexist neighbors over for the holidays. Even if they do look kinda like Kate McKinnon. Though she might not-so inadvertently flash you. Anyway, either way you’ve been warned.

Music Monday: Billie Eilish Edition

Well, this is a lovely way to start the week. Just a short little Tiny Desk (From Home) concert featuring the very talented Billie Eilish and her brother. I especially like the Tiny Desk cutout cardboard backdrop. Very convincing! Can I do this for, say, a street cafe in Paris? Since we Americans aren’t allowed to travel anywhere anymore, it’ll be the only way to see the world for a while. Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh, yes, escaping our current reality. Good luck with that. Happy Monday, kittens.
