My Weekend Crush

I’ve never been to an Adele concert. But, if I’m lucky enough to score tickets one of these days, I want to be the one dancing in the stands like Emma Thompson at the special “An Audience With Adele” special you kittens across the pond were able to watch over the weekend. As a crass American, I don’t have access to the whole show. But I know Emma dancing her ass off is the spiritual energy I want to bring into this holiday weekend. I say spiritual, because after everything I’ve consumed this week the only dancing I’m doing is from the couch to the refrigerators. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. I know Emma’s dancing culminated with her reuniting Adele with her childhood inspiration and English teacher. So, in case you also want a good cry with to come after your wild dancing, enjoy.

Vacation Vixen: Emma Thompson

Just a quick Monday morning reminder to find your whimsy wherever you can. And maybe to dye your hair white-platinum blonde. And maybe to get a fierce alternative lifestyle power haircut. And perhaps also be British. Or, screw it, we can’t all be Emma Thompson. But wouldn’t it be nice to try?

Gender Fuck Thompsons

Tessa Thompson in a suit? Check. Emma Thompson in that hair. Check. Agent M origin story? Check. Thor being handsome? Check. Cute aliens? Check. Have I mentioned all the suits? I’m kind of stupidly excited to see this movie mostly because of all the reasons listed above. But, really, I’d watch anything with the Thompsons in it – the suits are just gravy.

My Weekend Crush

If I was in the position to work with, provide a guided tour to and set up a dressing room for Dame Emma Thompson, I say without hesitation that this is exactly the way I would act. Except, well, instead of the Jonas Brothers I’d have Tegan & Sara to croon for her. Kate McKinnon is doing queer women everywhere a solid by repping us hard in front of Emma Thompson. If they don’t kiss this weekend on SNL I will consider it a travesty of gay justice. Respect. Happy weekend, all.

Gender Fuck Thursday: Trailer Edition

And the movie trailers just keep on coming. You might remember me talking about “Late Night,” the new Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Nisha Ganatra project about a legendary female late-night TV host trying to save her career.

Now, I don’t see anything overly gay – except for Emma’s wardrobe which is just an astonishingly fun assortment of suits and blazers. But you may recall Nisha’s feature film debut was “Chutney Popcorn” where she cleverly cast Jill Hennessy as her girlfriend. So I’m going to credit her with all the delightful Gender Fuck Thursday wardrobe choices.

Emma The Human Bra

What does it mean to support women? Like really, really support women? Well, supporting other women both in professional and personal settings is key. I would hope we all might all aspire to be the ideal human bras – supporting women tirelessly. But, admittedly, sometimes we fall short. Still, at bare minimum, we should all stop supporting men accused of sexual assaulting other women (and men). When women work with men who have credible allegations of sexual misconduct against them, it gives these bad men cover. It says, see, not all women believe this other woman or women saying bad things about me. If they did, they surely wouldn’t bend their morals so much to work with me, right? Right.

In the age of Me Too, normal clarity is actually pretty simple. Either you agree to keep working with the Harvey Weinsteins and Roman Polanskis and Woody Allens and Kevin Spaceys and Louis C.K.s and newly minted Oscar winner and admitted penis flasher Peter Farrellys of the world, or you don’t.

So then I’m thrilled beyond belief to tell you that Emma Thompson remains a true dame, all-around delight and moral powerhouse. She pulled out of Skydance Animation’s high-profile project “Luck,” after the company hired accused serial sexual harasser John Lasseter, who was forced out of Pixar for exactly those allegations. The letter Emma wrote resigning from the film is a template for how women and men should react when faced with the choice of working with a sex monster.

In a letter she wrote before resigning from the film, she wrote:

“It feels very odd to me that you and your company would consider hiring someone with Mr. Lasseter’s pattern of misconduct given the present climate in which people with the kind of power that you have can reasonably be expected to step up to the plate.”
But it gets better! She continued:
“If a man has been touching women inappropriately for decades, why would a woman want to work for him if the only reason he’s not touching them inappropriately now is that it says in his contract that he must behave “professionally”?”
And she finished ferociously, as one might expect, saying:
“I am well aware that centuries of entitlement to women’s bodies whether they like it or not is not going to change overnight. Or in a year. But I am also aware that if people who have spoken out — like me — do not take this sort of a stand then things are very unlikely to change at anything like the pace required to protect my daughter’s generation.”
Fuck. Yeah. Emma. Thompson. Forever.

Look, we all knew she was awesome already. But sometimes it’s great to remember how awesome she truly, truly is.

Granted, not all women are in the same financial situation or have the same privilege that Emma does to make these decisions. But we should all aspire to give the righteous middle finger to all these truly Bad Men and those who enable them.

Also, it’s another excuse to remind people that no one gets between Emma Thompson and Haley Atwell and all other women, really. Long live this Dame who supports dames.

p.s. Did I mentioned how much Emma and Hayley support each other? So much support. So much.

Late Night Ladies

More good news and lesbian worlds colliding, one of the biggest hits out of Sundance this year is “Late Night.” The movie stars Emma Thompson and is penned by Mindy Kaling and directed by Nisha Ganatra. What makes this of gay lady interest besides Emma’s presence (because Emma is always of gay lady interest) is director Nisha Ganatra. Those old enough to remember back to 1999 will no doubt have fond memories of her 1999 feature debut “Chutney Popcorn.” The cross-cultural family comedy-drama starred Nisha as a young Indian-American lesbian who agrees to be a surrogate for her straight sister while dealing with her parents traditional views. Oh, and she was also clever enough to cast Jill Hennessy has her girlfriend.

So, needless to say, I can’t wait to see what this amazing trio comes up with. And, with any luck, there’s be something for us gay too. You know, besides Emma.

Suit Up

Did you get everything you wanted for Christmas, kittens? Well, if not, here is something to belatedly full your stocking. The trailer for “Men in Black: International” should just be renamed “Tessa Thomas: Wears a Suit” because – hello. It’s like Tank Top Tuesday and Gender Fuck Thursday got together and had a beautiful baby and that baby grew up to be Tessa Thomson in both a tank top and a suit. And she even flirts with Emma Thompson.

Well, now, it almost feels like Christmas morning again.

What a Dame

Emma Thompson, continual human delight, is now Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire Emma Thompson. Or, you know, dame for short. The honor was bestowed upon her last week by Prince William. And at the ceremony she continued to show that despite her new fancy title, she is still just a never-ending human delight.

First, she wore this amazing suit. Amazing cut and color. But then, you know how much I love me a lady in a suit. Second, she wore sneakers – SNEAKERS – under her suit because comfort is king. The woman who threw away her Louboutins at the Golden Globes a few years ago is all about not having her damn feet bleed.

Third, Thompson also playfully flirted with Prince William, who she has known since he was little saying, “ ‘I can't kiss you, can I?’ And he said, ‘No, don’t! ”

Fourth, she wore and equal pay pin to the ceremony which is a truly dame-worthy message.

And fifth, but not least, in accepting this honor she also recognizes its the imperialistic history. She said of the title, “They send you a letter saying, ‘Will you accept it?’ You can choose not to. You can choose to say, ‘Well, of course we don’t have an empire anymore, thank God, because it was ghastly, colonial, racist, dreadful undertaking on every level,’ and actually have some moral principle about it. Or you can be like me and think, ‘Hmm, it’s gonna be a really nice badge.’” Because besides just being a delight she is also endlessly bright and empathetic and hilarious.

Man, the world needs more Emmas. Make that Dame Emmas.

My Weekend Crush

Rarely has the phrase, “What a dame,” been leveled with such accuracy as at Emma Thompson. Now, my love for Emma is well documented. I am well-versed in all of her nuanced awesomeness – from demanding women always eat dessert to her insistence she never fiddle with her face to her apology for initially signing that petition, to her love of big words, to her hate of Trump, to her steadfast support of women everywhere and all-around delightfulness in general. And now, all of that amazing is a full dame. Like, capital D, comes from the queen, Dame. And, it certainly couldn’t have happened to a nicer dame. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. Say it with me, Dame Emma Freakin’ Thompson.

Listen To 'Em

As the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse revelations continue to grow in number and horror, it’s important to not feel defeated. Yes, a rich, powerful man got away with sexually harassing, assaulting and – let’s be perfectly frank – raping women for decades. And as much as we can despair that this is just the way the world will always be, it is imperative that we push back against this false prophecy. No, men aren’t genetically hard-wired to objectify and abuse women. This is something they’ve been taught, something that society has ingrained in them as their right. But here’s the thing – it isn’t. And it’s up to us to make sure it isn’t. Every woman, EVERY SINGLE WOMAN, has experience with creepy men. And almost every woman has had experience with sexual harassment, abuse and assault.

So how do we stop it. Well, for one, listen to women. Listen to us when we say, “Hey, that guy is creepy.” Listen to us when we say, “That man acted inappropriately.” Listen to us when we say, “This man is a sexual predator.” Listen to us when we say, “No.” Listen to women and believe women.

And right now, and really always, one of the smartest women to listen to is Emma Thompson. I’ve always loved Emma Thompson. Always, always, always always. I howled, like literally howled, when Emma was among the esteemed artists to sign the letter of support for Roman Polanski. And then I cheered, dear heavens did I cheer, when she rethought her position and removed her name with apologies. This is one of the most clear-headed conversations on the corrosive culture of female objectification and toxic masculinity I’ve heard in a while.

Now this is not to say Emma’s is the only or the best voice to speak out about sexual abuse and harassment. In fact she acknowledges as much, saying women of color have it much harder and owning up to her own past mistakes and privilege (re: Polanski). But this, this kind of unabashed and straightforward truthfulness is what we need on an issue that for far too long has been swept under the rug as just part of business as usual. This is what happens when you put men and women in a workplace/the public/any shared space/the universe together, right? No, fuck that.

And while we’re at it, fuck Harvey Weinstein. Fuck Roman Polanski. Fuck Woody Allen. Fuck Bill O’Reilly. Fuck Bill Cosby. And fuck Donald Fucking Trump. Fuck all male predators. May women like Emma Thompson and the rest of us be the meteor racing toward all these dinosaurs spelling their imminent and total extinction.

The Trumperfly Effect

Imagine, if you will, an alternate timeline. A timeline where Emma Thompson goes out on a date with Donald Trump in 1998 after he calls her out of the blue while she is in her trailer. A timeline where they then fall in love and get married. A timeline where he finally realizes women are not just trophies to acquire or objects to ogle or things to serve him. A timeline where he finally learns that women are real human people who can be smart and funny and wonderful. A timeline where having a good, decent person in his life who is not a paid sycophants or a family member benefiting from his constant nepotism actually makes a difference. A timeline where then for the next 18 years instead of brooding about how to obtain more wealth and how to show off his power and how to vanquish his enemies, he just lives a quiet, happy life. A timeline where he stops feeling inadequate. A timeline where he stops worrying if his father ever loved him. Hell, a timeline where he even stops hating black and brown and foreign people. A timeline where he votes for Barack Obama – twice. Imagine, imagine if those butterfly wings had fluttered slightly faster how different our universe’s timeline could be.

Just kidding. I wouldn’t wish Donald Trump on anyone, let alone anyone as lovely as Emma Thompson.

Happy Eatsgiving

Dearest kittens. May you all have a most relaxing, most enjoyable, most delicious Thanksgiving. Or, at the very least, may you not dump your entire dinner on your lap. Now, if you want to dump your dinner on someone else’s lap, I will allow it. Especially that one uncle who won’t stop crowing about how great America is gonna be again. Bon appetite.

My Weekend Holy Shit

Wow. Like holy shit, wow. Well, to all my friends in the U.K., my deep condolences. This Brexit business is fairly horrible and fairly terrifying. So here is Emma Thompson being delightful to remind us all that our British friends really are lovely, despite the dark times that lie ahead. Also, let this be a lesson for us Yanks. If we don't want to crash our economy and succumb to xenophobia, how about we vote for the candidate actually running against Trump, eh? Yeah, I'm with her. Happy weekend, all.

SGALGG: Meryl + Emma 4EVA

If I had one wish it would be for world peace. If I had two wishes it would be for Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson to be in another movie together. If I had three wishes it would probably involve Jodie Foster, Tina Fey and a tropical island. But back to the second wish. I want Meryl and Emma to be in an amazing movie together so hard. Granted, 11 years ago they were in the TV movie “Angles in America” together and kissed (and climaxed together - no really). It was fucking amazing. Also how hot is The Angel America Emma? *choking sound* *sputters* *passes out*

But that glorious cinematic moment aside, what have they done together lately? Nada, except look really cute at awards shows while snuggling together. But I am impatient and greedy and want more. MORE. Extra special bonus points if more also means more kissing.

2014

2003

Until then, we are left to wish and wonder. Here is Ellen DeGeneres stoking those most cherished desires further by offering us side-by-side evidence of their greatness. I can’t decide who is more charming, but I’d pay all the money I have and ever will have to have Meryl Streep read recipes in a sexy voice to me forever while Emma makes pig noises in the background.

SGALGG: Awesome Ladies Edition

Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon AND Padma Lakshmi? Too. Much. Awesome. Go on without me. Hey, it’s been another long, busy week and it’s just half way through. So why not get through the second half with the help of some Straight Gals Acting Like Gay Gals (and/or just Awesome Gals). Also, not all of them are necessarily straight. Fine, mostly these were just cool women being cool together. Some days, that’s all you need.

Chrissy Teigen & Padma Lakshmi

*unintelligible gurgling noise*

Emma Thompson & Lupita Nyong'o

You know you’d try to steal a kiss, too. Atta girl, Emma.

Janelle Monae & Lupita Nyong'o

Though Janelle looks like she is trying to steal more than just a kiss.

Sasha Alexander & Lena Headey

I just love it when awesome ladies from different shows I love pose together.

Uzo Aduba & Tatiana Maslany

Ditto.

Jan Nash & Angie Harmon

BE MORE GAY, SHOW. BE MORE GAY.

Emma Delightful

I would pay for an online service that sends me daily video compilations of Emma Thompson being awesome. I really would. I’d open up my email every day and it would be like a little present. You’ve got delightfulness! This awards season Emma has been particularly delightful, which is actually a hard thing to say considering her average level of delightfulness is already off the charts. But whether she is throwing her Louboutins off on live television, photobombing Lupita Nyong’O, plotting how to kill someone with an Oscar statuette, explaining the secrets to marriage, making Oscar-worthy animal sounds, discussing how being in a musical made her clinically depressed and drinking at award shows, she never disappoints. I know we have the gifs, but I demand a video editing service. Think how much happier we would all be? Make it happen, Silicon Valley.

p.s. I mean ,even when she is trying to not be delightful, she is - of course - delightful.

God save the queens

Helen Mirren

God save the queens of England. After watching “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” last weekend, I reaffirmed my long-simmering Anglophilia. Heavens, the Brits are lovely. First of all, those accents. God damn, those accents. And they’ve got crisp composure about them. You know, that stiff upper lip thing. But then there’s that wonderful juxtaposition that can happen. Those proper accents, that cool exterior and then seemingly out of nowhere the they can say the most shockingly hilarious or absolutely filthy things. It’s the bawdiness under the sophistication that I think I enjoy the most. I mean, any dame who’ll wrap herself in a union jack flag and nothing else at age 65 and look better than most 25 years old doing it, well, that’s a woman you want to share a pint with – preferably more. A few more of my very favorite English lasses. Rule Britannia, baby.

Lena HeadeyAnd now I have to go rewatch “Imagine Me & You,” immediately.

Rachel WeiszOf course she married 007, just look at her.

Shelley ConnSome of you thought I didn’t give Shelley the proper love in the “Nina’s Heavenly Delights” post. Trust me, I love her good and proper.

Helena Bonham CarterSure, Bellatrix is totally evil and batshit crazy. But, admit it, also kinda sexy.

Kate WinsletSuch a pretty face, such a potty mouth.

Alex KingstonWhat I wouldn’t give to roll over and say, “Hello, sweetie.”

Kristin Scott ThomasDon’t you hate it when jam from your crumpet gets on your hand and you have to lick it off slowly? Wait, sorry, got the wrong word again – replace “hate” with “love.”

Julia OrmondI feel forever robbed by Showtime for not giving us a Julia/Eve Best love scene on “Nurse Jackie.”

Emma ThompsonFew people so fully embody a word as Emma does “delightful.”

Emma WatsonI always knew she would grow up, well, perfect.
