Tank Top Tuesday

In the spectrum of gay outfits – outside of feather boas and leather chaps – few can be considered gayer than the tank top/suspenders combo. In fact, it is so very, very gay that it has become costume department shorthand for being, well, gay. While firefighters may have first inspired the simple look, it took lovely ladies to take it to the next level. And, of course, when it comes to combining suspenders with a tank top, only the original white tank will do. Take that, Larry King.

Summer GlauEven soulless killing machines like to look hot.

Shirley MansonFuck, yeah, now that's a motherfuckingrockstar.

Lauren Lee SmithThe soup chef shows us what's really cooking.

Victoria BeckhamYes, it's Posh Spice. No, don't judge me. Admit it, it's kinda hot.

Maria BelloDaryl Hannah is all, “Damn, Bello and her tank and suspenders hogging all the hot. I knew I should have worn the mermaid tail.”

Olivia WildeNo mountain oxes were harmed in the making of this post.

the thing is, though, that if you are built like thoroughly modern millie, i.e., your beads won't hang straight, what are you supposed to do? suspenders (aka braces for british englishers) to the outside, or the inside? this is a style for the svelte, not the zaftig among us :-(

Ravaj, I wanted to post almost the same thing! My boobs are too big for braces (suspenders to me should go with stockings). If I wore braces with a tank top, things would get knocked over. Just saying! Not for me, but VERY nice to look at on others!!

Can I just say, as a smaller-breasted woman, to the larger-breasted women above ... come on, just give us this one thing!

I mean, the power you have over us with your glorious cleavages (cleaveii?), let us have this one moment of enjoyment in actually having a benefit in our smaller handfuls of joy.

;)

Olivia Wilde *swoon*

Eh, I've never been a fan of the suspenders look. I think they're kind of silly.

To sarah in chicago - as a big breasted woman, I'm gonna say that smaller breasted women get a LOT. Shirts that are the right size for the middle and shoulders and still button, t-shirts that don't ripple on the sides and pull in the middle, turtlenecks and ribbed sweaters that are flattering, affordable attractive bras, probably 80% less fetishizing, much more variety in the clothes (both outer and under), less back pain, less shoulder pain, clothes that are designed to fit YOU. Believe me, big boobs - while nice - are not all they're cracked up to be.

Not to mention that when I look down, that's all I see. I can't tell you how many times I've walked around with a smudge from the commuter rail on my shirt and didn't know, because I couldn't SEE it. Sigh.

You do realise that what I wrote was a joke, right? I even put in a winking smiley so that you would know that I was purposefully being silly/stupid in what I was writing.

I have a lot of large-breasted friends, no few of which have had breast-reduction surgeries because of all the physical sh*te they've had to go through, particularly so if they were athletes. And that's leaving aside all of the crap they got socially, from clothes as you mention, to people that would talk to their breasts and not them.

I thought given the overall light-heartedness of the post, everyone would have picked up on the facetiousness of my comment.

Oh, and don't assume that clothes are designed to fit me. I'm an athlete, particularly in swimming, skiing, cycling ... this has meant I have way broader shoulders than most women, and arms, and thighs. I'm not huge by any stretch of the imagination, just toned with a 'swimmers build', but even given that, women's clothes are not designed for me.

Oh, and in follow-up to the above, I'm also femme, so guy's clothes aren't an option for me unfortunately.

today is olivia wilde's birthday! heard that on the radio this morning. appropriate, then, that she would "headline" today's post.

Without fail, every Tuesday when I check in here and see the title "Tank Top Tuesday" the little gay girl in my head does a dance of joy - no matter who is rocking the tank top, big or small boobs.

*nods* totally, I am oh-so with you on this one ... I can't even imagine what it is like to walk into a clothing store and EXPECT that most of the things therein will fit you.

It's often not even a size issue, rather it's a style thing. They are not designed to fit anyone but the woman that is thin, not too tall, not too small, not muscled in any way, shape or form, has hips but not curvy hips, doesn't have long arms, etc, etc.

*sigh*

I dream simply about finding a dress that doesn't end up making my shoulders look like those of a reserve linebacker for the Chicago Bears.

Hey, DS, could we have a daily post celebrating muscularity/toned/athleticism in women?

this post and the comments have been enlightening in so many ways:
1. the benefits of small(er) boobs
2. that suspenders are sort of silly looking (even though hot) and that being said I will never understand how you could wear a tank top with suspenders to some sort of official event. *shrugs*
3. only really awesome people have their birthday today *bg*

Hey, DS, could we have a daily post celebrating muscularity/toned/athleticism in women? E.g. Dara Torres (I know she's straight, but we can dream, can't we?)

(From Sarah in Chicago)

I concur!!!

This edition of Tank Top Tuesday and the outtakes of BJ Fletcher over at AE made an absolutely miserable Monday seem like a distant memory. Thanks!

"Hey, DS, could we have a daily post celebrating muscularity/toned/athleticism in women?" I wholeheartedly second this idea. Suggestions (in addition to Dara Torres) Gina Carano, anyone from the Norwegian women's handball team, Abby Wambach. *swoon*
