Carol meets Thriller

I know I said I’d stop complaining about the lack of mainstream support for “Carol,” but what the fucking hell is this shit? I mean it, WHAT THE FUCKING HELL? So I was watching TV last night and this spot for “Carol” came on. When it started I was like, “Oh, good, finally some nationwide publicity for this film.” But then I watched with increasing alarm as the gorgeous romantic drama that I loved was turned into a “provocative thriller” complete with frightening voiceovers and misleading scenes. I guess the story of two women in love that didn’t end in tears, death or sleeping with a man was just too hard for the studio to sell. So they had to make it scary. Boo, Harold, they’re lesbians.

They forgot the part where Carol reveals she is actually an alien, sent on an epic quest to find the Ring of Isildur, joined by her plucky sidekick Therese, who has a knack for solving crimes in unconventional ways. It's the screwball buddy comedy sci-fi movie of the year!

But seriously, the people who go see the movie based on that ad are going to be SO disappointed. It's just asking for backlash.

@ AnnieStinkle oh my god I just laughed so hard! I'm actually surprised they didn't try to plug the movie like that:) Wow DS I had to watch that several times in order to believe that this is a true thing that exists. Uhhhhhh my favorite part was when they make it look like Harge has caught them together at that restaurant and Carol looks like a lesmaniac who's about to murder someone with that gun.

Noooo! This is awful! To get this hideousness out of my head, I'm going to re-read your previous love-struck words about Carol now.

I did not realise people are so scared of lesbians - that explains the Oscar snub! Thank you Dorothy for all your great thoughts on Carol and please do not stop sharing it with us.

Uhh, guys? You wanna know why Carol got snubbed?

Guardian interview, that you've probably already seen, seeing as it was first aired in Nov 2016, and it was *recorded* in 2015. But you might've forgotten what Todd Haynes, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara had to say. Particularly Todd's complaint that [Hollywood] is scared of making women's films (paraphrased), Cate and Rooney saying "We shouldn't STILL be having this same stupid conversation about equal pay for women!" (paraphrased) and Rooney says, "Men don't get called bitches. When they're uppity, they're just considered normal." (paraphrased).

The Academy doesn't like being told they're uppity? Stupid? Wrong? Yeah, probably not. No BP, no BD nominations, because those good old boys can sure bear a grudge. Certainly seems that way, anyhow.

All that's missing is:

'In a world...'

and my PFLAG mom said she didn't want to see 'Carol' because it's about a lesbian love story and everything is gay now. Like me, her daughter.

She would have gone to see it on the basis of this trailer though.
