My Weekend Crush

“Game of Thrones” can be an awful sausagefest sometimes. So many old and young men all jockeying for an iron throne while wielding their big swords. Overcompensation, much? And don’t get me started on all the gratuitous tits and ass – I mean I’m not totally complaining, but come on. Still the series has been able to spring to life some memorable, exciting and unconventional female heroines. Little survivor Arya Stark. Valiant knight Brienne of Tarth. And, thanks to last Sunday’s episode, the biggest badass of them all: Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, a.k.a. Daenerys Targaryen a.k.a. Khaleesi a.k.a. Mother of Dragons.

Those of us unacquainted with the books could have never guessed that the meek, white-blonde haired girl under her vicious brother’s thumb and married off like a chess piece in a power play would become the most assertive and cunning of them all. Also have I mentioned she has dragons? And she can’t be burned by fire? And will always spare the innocent? And you heard me on the dragons bit, right?

In a scene that I have now watched no fewer than a half dozen times, Daenerys ascends to her rightful place in the pantheon of badass chickens when (SPOILER ALERT: Hurry up and watch it, dude) she bests the misogynistic slave master and commandeers his slave army only to set them free and have 8,000 soldiers march willingly for her into impending battle. Also, there are dragons. In showing no mercy to those who oppress others (all of the slave masters and rulers) while ultimate compassion to those denied free will (the slave army and trainees) she is, quite literally, turns around her own life’s trajectory and comes to a place of just yet unquestionable power. My greatest hope is that is it Daenerys who gets to kill that little evil inbred putz King Joffrey. A dragon is not a slave. Daenerys is not a slave. Women need not be a slave to men’s power games in “Game of Thrones.” Say hello to quite possibly the best mic drop (by way of a whip) in TV history. Dracarys, out. Happy weekend, all.

I am so on board with your weekend crush choice. My wife asked me last night if I was going to watch a new show, or just watch the ending of Game of Thrones again. It takes my breath away. Khaleesi takes my breath away. Amazing tv, amazing woman. I can't wait to see her march into battle. Those guys have no idea what is coming for them.

That scene was so jaw-droppingly fantastic! Emilia Clarke knocked that one out of the park.
And am I the only one thinking there must be tonnes of Daenerys/Missandei fanfic out there? Not to mention Margaery/Sansa?

Amazing!! I've read the books but don't watch the show, so it was wonderful to see this scene come to life. Just as good as I imagined it!!

I want Arya, Brianne and Daenerys to somehow teamup and conquer the world by being total badasses

In the books the woman are consistently this awesome and the best ones, I wish that would translate better to the show (especially regarding Cat and Sansa).

Joffrey! Oh Boy...no spoilers here. but... oh... boy.

Dani is my favorite character, followed up by Arya, and Brienne. Sansa and Cat are seriously really amazing in the books as well. HBO is doing an amazing job with this series. I usually hate the movie, or t.v. interpretation of books that I have read, but they have done a wonderful job thus far. That scene when Dani scoops up her army by freeing them first was so spot on. I visualized it in my mind when reading it, but OMG if they didn't make it better on the screen. Thanks Dorothy. Go Dani!

I'm apparently the only person on earth who doesn't like Daenerys.
So she killed the slave owners by using her dragons and plans to kill a lot more innocent people once she's in Westeros and I'm supposed to cheer? Because she's a woman? Because she's hot? Yeah no.
Although I completely agree with you on Arya and Brienne, and on the complete double standard with gratuitous nudity.

My prediction for who ends up on The Iron Throne is Sansa Stark with Brienne as Commander of her Queen's Guard. And Tyrion as Hand/?.

My reasoning - Sansa is learning The Game from the best - Cersei, Littlefinger, Lady Olenna - so far.

Agreed. Strong stuff, even though I knew what was coming. One of the best scenes I've seen on the screen for a while.

Weekend, weekday or all week long, Daenerys is totally crush-worthy. What a wonderfully developed character! Her story arc is both complex-evolving over the seasons with subtly and surprises and yet relatably simple and hard to look away from. The rightful heir, Dani is setting herself up to take what is hers...lest we forget, her ancesters forged the iron throne. She's no usurper Dorothy, thank you for the post; I couldn't agree more!

And Shasta...I hope like hell you're right! The chemistry btwn Daenerys and Missandei (as well as Margaery & Sansa) could sail a million ships! lol :D
