Tank Top Thursday

Today is a special emergency edition of Tank Top Tuesday, held on Thursday in accordance of the Surrenders bylaws which read: “Pictures of women in tank tops may be posted on days other than Tuesday in cases of ridiculous hotness/extreme impatience/overwhelming swooning.” After seeing the Battlestar babes on their bikes, I’d say we’ve met that threshold and then some. Holy frak! As The Gentleman was so kind to point out last week, that Interview magazine photoshoot of Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer decked out in bikini biker gear was no fluke. Katee and Tricia are, indeed, smokin’ hot motorcycle mamas.

The friends were featured in the LA Times this week for their riding prowess. Whatever you do, DO NOT MISS the accompanying video. P.S. How much do I love that the Times has a woman writer for their motorcycle column? So much so that I’m seething with jealousy at her choice beat assignment. Of course, I’d have to learn to ride first. And considering the fact that I’m so clumsy I sometimes hurt myself just getting out of the car, I should probably resist the urge. Well, at least I can look at the pictures. And my, what pictures they are. Tank tops + motorcycles + Katee and Tricia = Thank God I wrote those bylaws. Look, Tricia agrees.

Check out AfterEllen later today for more on Tricia and Katee getting their motor running for the Times.

Bye, Padma, bye

Oh, Padma. I think I’m going to miss you most of all. “Top Chef” closes out its fourth season tonight with the grand finale featuring adorable honorary chefbian Stephanie, real-life chefbian Lisa and faux-hawk connoisseur Richard. I’m Team Stephanie all the way. But, regardless, they’re all winners for having spent so much time in the presence of The Ultimate Kitchen Goddess herself, Padma Lakshmi. (SEE UPDATE BELOW, plus YAY STEPHANIE!)

To quote dearly departed (from the show, not this mortal coil) chef Antonia from Eater LA:
“(Padma) really looked like a goddess. I was so excited to see a woman so beautiful, knew so much about a food, ate like a rock star and looks like a super model. It’s what everyone wants to be.”

You said it, sister. Let’s take a look back, in wonder, at the many faces (not to mention the rest of her) of Padma. [Click any and, I highly recommend, all to enlarge]

Yep, I will definitely miss Padma most of all. Mmm, Padma, mmm.

UPDATE: Oh. My. God. Did you read the LA Times piece on Padma yesterday? If so, this is the most perfect quote in the history of the world:

“My greatest pleasure is to put a plate before you and watch you,” said Lakshmi. “But you know it’s true! I long to hear you say, ‘Mmmmm.’”

Padma, I will “Mmmmm’” for you anytime. Call me! Feed me!

Happy Pride

Happy Pride! OK, fine, I realize I’m 10 days late. But I’m running on Q.S.T. here, so if you look at it that way I’m really right on time. Actually, I might even be early. Regardless, Pride Month is the one time of year where it’s not just OK to be gay, it’s fabulous. As a dedicated misanthrope, you’d think I would shun the crowds and hysteria (not to mention tourists and lookie-loos) who always gather for Pride. But I can’t help it. I love it. And I also love the relentless disco beat that takes over the city that weekend.

In honor of Pride celebrations around the country (and the world), how about some tasty beats? DJ, drop the needle.

Cyndi Lauper – “Into the Nightlife”

Annie – “I Know UR Girlfriend Hate Me”

Kelly/Britney – “Gimme More Shoes”

And, what gay old time would be complete without a little ABBA? Courtesy one of the most cathartic scenes ever put on celluloid:

Muriel & Rhonda – “Waterloo”

Happy Pride, ladies and (discerning) gentlemen. What can I say, it’s good to be gay.

Totally Choice

Whaaaat? No, seriously. What? I, like, kind of won. OK, I didn’t win-win. I’m not going to get a trophy in the mail. And I wasn’t on TV. (Thank God for that.) But I was the NewNowNext Awards “Most Totally Rad Sickest Blog Ever” Audience Choice Award winner. OK, first let me say that given the big boy competition I had, I had totally written off the NNNA and didn’t even watch Saturday night (sorry, Logo!) I was out that night and knew that dlisted had already won the big prize, so I figured I’d go online Sunday morning to see who took home the Audience Choice (my money was on towleroad). But, lo and behold, when I came home later that night I opened my email and there were congratulations. And not the kind from the Cote D’Ivoire where the heirs of a rich prince needs to use your bank account to deposit untold millions. But the actual winning kind. Crazy, I know.

(If you, like me, cannot quite believe it, click to watch the segment and keep an eye on the bottom left-hand corner. My fellow nominated AfterEllen ladies Bridget, Jill and 3Way all got shut out of the main NNNA, but also took home Audience Choice Awards. Watch the whole thing at logoonline.com.)

As astonished as I am at taking home the Audience Choice Award, I am even more thankful to you. That’s right, you. No, don’t look over your shoulder. I mean you. Thank you, thank you. Y’all deliver like Domino’s when it comes to this voting business. I should really tip better. What is so great about this honor is that it comes from you. Yes, you. Don’t make me go through the turning around, false modesty thing again. You know it’s all you. And, really, that’s what makes it special. I’m endlessly thankful and, quite frankly, amazed that you keep coming back day after day. So, thank you. You are the Most Totally Rad Sickest Readers Ever.

Recap’s on

My Weekend Crush

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s the gay thing. But I think Cynthia Nixon has been looking fantastic lately. Really, really fantastic. After seeing her in the “Sex and the City” movie last weekend (and when I say seeing her, I mean ALL of her – da-YUM!), I don’t think it’s just me. Girlfriend looks fierce. And you know, maybe it was just the nostalgia. Maybe it was the cocktails we snuck into the theater. But I had a great time watching the movie. So much so, I’m tempted to go see it again this weekend.

My fondness for the series stretches back to its beginning a decade ago. It was around the same time I moved to California and here were four ready-made friends I could visit with each week. And, over time, they became as familiar as old friends. And, as I’ve mentioned before, Miranda was always my favorite. It wasn’t just the suits or the sarcasm or the scarlet hair. No, it was that Cynthia Nixon made Cynthia Nixon more than a stereotypical ball-buster. She made her entirely human and therefore entirely relatable. Seeing Cynthia step back into Miranda was a treat once again. And once again she made Miranda real and relatable. It wasn’t the Carrie/Big breakup that made me cry, it was the Miranda/Steve breakup. That felt real. That felt raw.

All these years later, what I admired about Miranda is what I admire about Cynthia. She is smart. She is talented. She is hard-working. She is unfailingly honest. And then there’s the one thing Miranda wasn’t – she is gay. (Well, there was that one episode with the kiss in the elevator.) The way she has publicly handled both her relationship with girlfriend Christine Marinoni and her battle with breast cancer is inspiring. That’s how it’s done – privately, but honestly. Plus the whole gay thing must really be agreeing with her because (and I really can’t stress this enough) girlfriend looks fantastic. Happy weekend, all.

Not invisible to us

I feel a lot of things about the Democratic primary process. Sadness. Pride. Anger. Relief.

I am in awe of the history we Democrats have made. I voted for Hillary Clinton in my primary. I will vote for Barack Obama in the general election. That will represent two firsts in my voting lifetime: my first vote for a legitimate female presidential candidate and my first vote for a legitimate African-American presidential candidate. Thanks to them, American presidential politics looks a little more like America.

And while the significance of this moment in our nation’s racial reconciliation will be written about in history books from here until eternity, I can’t help but feel a lingering ache about what the history books will no doubt ignore. And what they will ignore is this. Many, many women in America feel hurt by this primary process. We feel berated. We feel marginalized. We feel – as Hillary mentioned in her final primary speech Tuesday – invisible.

And as news of Hillary’s impending concession on Friday makes the rounds, we can’t help but think that many, many men in America are thinking: “Yes, we’re finally rid of that woman!” Or to put their sentiments less charitably (but possibly more accurately): “Thank God, the bitch is gone!”

The misogyny that has existed in this campaign is not a question. There is no, “Was there sexism in the primary process?” That is simply a part of a large chunk of the rhetoric and coverage we were bombarded with every day.

It was there in the depiction of Hillary to every man’s first wife in probate court. It was there in the oh-so-charming Hillary nutcracker. It was there in the she-devil graphics. It was there in the comparisons to Glenn Close’s psychotic stalker in “Fatal Attraction.” It was there in the insistence, for months and months, that she should quit even while she was still winning. (For the masochists among us, relive the greatest “hits” on Shakesville’s excellent 104-part Hillary Sexism Watch series. And then to feel better read Melissa’s terrific “For the Record.”)

She handled all of that with grace and strength, just as Obama handled the racist attacks against him with grace and strengths. I refuse to play the “my otherness is more important than your otherness”-game. No African-American or woman has ever run as the major party candidate in a presidential election, let alone been elected. Yes, both made mistakes and, at times, played the otherness card. Yes, there was mismanagement and missteps in Hillary’s campaign. But no amount of strategizing can overcome a problem that people simply refuse to admit exists.

I feel the media’s coverage and presidential primary became a de facto referendum on the question of whether we still have gender discrimination in this country. And I feel like we lost the argument. It’s not they’re right and we’re wrong. It’s that too many people just didn’t want to hear it. What are you talking about, woman? You’re equal enough, honey. Love the paintsuit, babe.

What I mostly feel tonight is exhausted. I feel emotionally drained and I feel a little ashamed at my relief. Yes, I wanted Hillary to win. But after seeing the bruising, relentless, unabashed negation of the very concept that there might still be sexism in our culture, I’m tired of fighting. I know I shouldn’t feel this defeated by the bludgeoning blowhards who insists it’s our problem, not theirs. But I am.

While emailing back and forth with friends Tuesday about Obama’s clinching the nomination, one mirrored my feelings perfectly. She said at least they won’t have Hillary to kick around anymore. I’m glad she won’t have to face the assault anymore. I’m glad I won’t have to hear it anymore. But I hope that amid her own disappointment she has the time to feel proud of what she has accomplished. Record-breaking turnout. Unprecedented number of votes. Nearly half of all Democrats. She has earned the right to celebrate her successes and thank her supporters. She has earned our respect.

Often, while reading about Hillary’s supporters and successes, I was surprised by my own visceral reaction to each accomplishment. In a way, it felt like Hillary’s success was my success. That her triumph was our triumph. Maybe that highest and hardest glass ceiling she spoke of could finally be shattered. I can’t tell you the number of times I got a lump in my throat thinking both of her supporters born before women even had the chance to vote and the next generation looking to her as an example of the limitless possibilities of our gender. When done right, politics is and will always be deeply personal.

What the history books will probably fail to mention is the incredible impact her candidacy has had on women in this country. While I feel disillusioned and worn out today, I hope that ache soon will be filled with a pride and determination that a woman can and will be president in my lifetime. And when she takes the oath of office, if it’s not Hillary herself, I hope she thanks Hillary for blazing the trail and taking the hits.

I’m proud I got to vote for her. I am proud of her. Thanks, Hillary.

Happy, um, Hump Day

Yes, I realize it is wrong of me to label this post “hump” anything with those accompanying visuals. What can I say I’m just a naughty, naughty girl. But I just couldn’t not share these shots of Tricia Helfer, Grace Park and Katee Sackhoff. And did I mention the motorcycle? And the chaps? The women of “Battlestar Galactica” keep mocking my non-watching. (No, I’m not caught up yet. I’ve barely even started. Save your scolding letters, I already admitted to being a very naughty girl. I will repent…as soon as I find the time.) Now, I know it’s also probably wrong of Battlestar to promote its high-quality product with lowest-common denominator photos. But, am I complaining? Are you crazy? Please enjoy these three lovely ladies modeling what I can only imagine is a new Hell’s Angels line of swimwear from the pages of Interview magazine. Happy Hump Day, indeed. [Click ’em to make your Wednesday even better.]

p.s. Is it just me, or is this photoshoot like a strange cross between “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “The Wild Bunch”? Like I said, I’m not complaining.

p.p.s. Via The Gentleman, here is photographic evidence that Tricia and Katee might be real-life biker babes. Wow, that got my motor running, so to speak.

Tank Top Tuesday

Welcome to Tank Top Tuesday: Top Chef Edition. Tomorrow will mark the beginning of the end for the Bravo culinary contest as the first half of the two-part finale airs. It’s been a long, hard, asshat-filled season. But it has also had a bevy of very gifted, very deserving, very adorable female chefs. For the first time in Top Chef history, three of the final four are women. And what’s better than having three talented women make the finals? Having three talented women make the finals while wearing tank tops, of course!
StephanieAntoniaLisa

Now, I’m going to cheat and include Padma in this parade of tank tops. Technically she is wearing a tank dress and not a tank top. But I seriously doubt anyone will mind. I mean, uh, look.

Also, she dances. Oh, dear God, I may not make it until Wednesday.

The finale is in sunny Puerto Rico and our cheftestants are all dressed for the occasion. Heck, chefbian Lisa even got a very special lesbian haircut for the occasion. In fact, the entire final four is working their inner lesbian with their tropical looks. I mean, Stephanie and Lisa are practically twinsies.

And Richard and Lisa now have matching gay hair. I half expect to see gratuitous product placement for Olivia Cruises along with the ubiquitous Glad, GE and Toyota name drops.

So, ladies, and gentleman, start your sauté pans. It’s finale time! Is it hot in here, or is that just Padma? Mmm, Padma, mmm...

Tina “The Hotness” Fey

[Tap, tap, tap.] Hello, hello. Is this thing on? OK, good. Right, so now that I have all of your attention I just wanted to say … TINA FUCKING FEY! I’ve been shouting her praises to the mountain tops. Shouting until I was hoarse. Shouting to the point where people were starting to throw things. But now, finally, I can shout with authority that TINA FEY IS THE HOTTEST OF THEM ALL! Ahem. And that’s not just me shouting, that is all of lesbiankind shouting. Well, all of AfterEllen lesbiankind. Tina is No. 1 on the 2008 AfterEllen.com Hot 100. I think, at least for today, this may have restored my faith in humanity, or – more precisely – lesbianity. You don’t have to be a regular reader of this silly little site to know that I have what could be called “A Thing” for the fabulous Ms. Fey. To recap: Smart. Sexy. Funny. Geeky. And, dear God, those glasses.

Her fame comes from talent, not her time in the tabloids. Her charm comes from her intellect, not what she looks like in a bikini. Her wit comes from real substance, not some flash-in-the-pan style. She is the antidote to everything I hate about the sad spectacle of bread and circus our popular culture has become. Yeah, damn right I’m gushing. But I can gush because, in case you hadn’t heard, TINA FEY IS THE HOTTEST OF THEM ALL!

Since it has been almost four whole weeks since my last Tina fix, how about we rewind and take a look at Tina being Tina during her April appearance on Conan. The bit about her daughter being like an abusive boyfriend is just another reason why I love her. Well, that and – um, shall we say – her girls. Damn, they looked great. Seriously. Now that, that is hot.

Recap’s on

[Click Padma to follow her to recap bliss.]

p.s. Mmm, Padma, mmm is the AfterEllen Hot 100 list hottie #85.

My Weekend Crush

I’ve already confessed on these very pages that I don’t watch “Grey’s Anatomy.” I simply can’t take the doctorly navel gazing. But that doesn’t mean I don’t watch Sara Ramirez. Quite the contrary. I’ve watched her closely. Very, very closely. Sara is, what I believe the kids today are calling, The Sex. She is incredibly, ridiculously, outrageously sexy. All that and the woman can flat-out sing. Jesus, if someone tells me she can cook too I might actually die this very minute.

The thing is she is also what the kids today would call thick. Now, I have to agree with other wise women of the web who come down against calling women thick. It makes us sound dense and/or like a Porterhouse. Neither of which are particularly flattering and/or appropriate. What I will say is that Sara is a woman who looks like a woman, and there ain’t much sexier than that.

There also ain’t much sexier than the kiss Sara and Brooke Smith had in the Grey’s finale. Lord. Have. Mercy. (Seriously, you’re gonna want to click those.) You know what I like? I like it when women hold each other’s faces while kissing. Like they have to. Like if they don’t, they may not be able to keep standing or breathing or living. You know, sort of like this.

The Callie and Erica storyline may, may, just draw me into the Grey zone. But then, maybe I’ll just rely on all those faithful YouTubers who make clips and videos and whatnots to their (and my) hearts’ content. See, maybe today’s youth are OK after all. I mean, they did give us this which is pretty much the best argument for the invention of the “replay” button ever. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. How could I forget, she is also a friend of The Gays. And in Spanish to boot.

Breakin’ up is hard to do

Sigh. I was hoping to ignore the ubiquitous “Jodie and the Homewrecker” stories out there this past week, but the dozen or so emails on the subject sitting patiently in my inbox cannot be ignored. (Seriously, I’m not ignoring all you – I’m just terribly behind on my emails.) So, here is the thing. I know this photo of Jodie Foster and her supposed new girlfriend Cynthia Mort has popped up online. I know the backstory. (Cynthia was a screenwriter on “The Brave One” and they met on the set.) I know it’s supposedly shocking to Hollywood insiders. I know.

Is it true? Sigh. I have no idea. Is it more than a little sad? Yes, very much yes. Breakups are almost always sad. Breakups with kids involved are always, always sad. And public breakups are a sad spectacle I don’t wish on anyone. May Jodie and Cydney have the time and privacy to sort it all out together.

What I do find interesting about this “story” is how it has been covered around the globe. And when I say globe, I mean globe. A quick Google News search found an item on a news site in Azerbaijan. No, really. But, leave it to the Brits to give us the most gossipy take of all. The adjective usage in the Daily Mail piece alone makes it an (unintentionally) hilarious read. Also, anytime someone writes about the “Pink Mafia” I giggle. Really, I think it’s the only appropriate response.

The only real “news” I could glean from this whole sad spectacle is that Cynthia Mort’s ex is ex-“thirtysomething”-star Melanie Mayron. OK, this dates me a bit, but I used to love “thirtysomething.” Granted, I was a teenager at the time and enamored with the thought of grown-up problems. But it was by the same folks who made “My So-Called Life,” so it was actually pretty good, yuppie angst and all. I had no idea Melanie was gay. (Though I have since learned she was in “The Itty Bitty Titty Committee,” which I have yet to see). She always intrigued me with her funky clothes and funkier glasses. And her cute red hair was kinda short. But I always thought her penchant for blazers with the sleeves rolled up was because it was the 80s. Guess my teenage gaydar wasn’t as finely honed at it is now. Live and learn.

Kiss this

I am, and will always be, in favor of girls kissing. But like everything else it’s all about the context. Are these two drunk girls surrounded by cheering frat boys? Yeah, no thanks. Or are these two women who are genuinely interested in each other. Thank you, ma’am may I have another. With that I give you two songs about girls kissing. And not just two songs about girls kissing, but two songs about girls kissing called “I Kissed a Girl.” Seriously, are there no other ways to title songs about this subject?

The first you will recognize as Jill Sobule’s 1995 hit:

The second you might recognize as Katy Perry’s new single:

Now, I find it interesting that while both songs are called “I Kissed a Girl” there is no actual kissing of girls in either video. I can understand why Jill excluded the smoochage. It was 13 years ago, after all, and still two years before Ellen’s “Yep” heard around the world. Also Jill has since embraced her lesbian fanbase and, having met her in real life, is simply adorable.

But the Katy exclusion. That’s just…weird. I mean isn’t the drunken straight girl hook-up (with optional hot tub clause) now standard operating procedure on MTV these days? As undeniably infectious as her song is (seriously, I’ve been humming the damn thing all weekend), it’s stuff like this that helped make that idiotic Girls Gone Wild dude a bajillionaire. (For a thorough examination of exactly what’s wrong with this song, check out Malinda’s treatise on B.L.W.E.)

If only she had stopped at the chorus. I kissed a girl, and I liked it. Yeah, now that’s a song worth singing.

Political meet personal

By now, you’ve probably seen both of these clips. The first is Ellen’s joyous announcement that she and Portia are getting married now that the California Supreme Court had overturned the ban on gay marriage. The second is Republican presidential nominee John McCain explaining why gays and lesbians should not be allowed to legally marry. I’ve put them together because they are the perfect illustration of the clash of the personal and the political. Take a look (if you haven’t already) and we’ll dish.

So, how can you call yourself a human being and not be happy for Ellen and Portia after seeing that announcement? Look at Portia’s face. The only thing that would have made that moment more perfect is if Portia had come on stage with Ellen and they had, well, anything – kissed, hugged, held hands. But, hey, that’s Ellen’s style and I respect that.

Then there is McCain. If that’s not the very definition of uncomfortable, I don’t know what is. The guy looks like he’d rather be making out with Dick Cheney than explaining his position to Ellen’s face. And really, how could he? He is essentially saying, I don’t think you or your love is equal. I don’t think you deserve the same recognition or rights. That’s not just a difference of opinion, sir, that’s a difference in basic human decency. And speaking of basic human decency, what kind of person deliberately goes onto a program for publicity, and then tells the host she is not and should not be equal under the law? I want the free airtime, I’m just not that wild about you, lady. Hypocrite. P.S. Way to not let the old coot off the hook, Ellen. Tim Russert could learn a thing or two from that grilling. I know this post veers off from the poppy culture I usually obsess focus on, but things like this are just a reminder that as disappointed as I am that Hillary (more than likely) will not win the nomination, this man CANNOT be our next president. [Hat tip, Rowdy, for the clips!]

My Weekend Crush

Jane Lynch is awesome. This is just a fact like gravity and global warming and that if you drop your toast it will always, always, always land butter-side down. She is so funny that no matter where you put her, she will get you a laugh -- be it “The L Word” or “Two and a Half Men” or “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” or all those Christopher Guest movies. She is so good that it’s easy to forget that what she does is actually really hard. It’s hard to swoop in and steal every scene. But she does it and she does it with a wink and a smile and you just know she loves it. In fact, she is so great that you wonder if the casts of the shows she guest stars in ever get nervous. Better be on your toes, folks, Jane is bringing her A-Game.

While she’s known for her deadpan-meets-smarmy genius, I’m licking my chops to see Jane stretch her chops in the new film “Julie & Julia” with Meryl Streep. Meryl will play culinary legend Julia Child and Jane will play her sister. Jane + Meryl + Food = I’ve had dreams that weren’t this good. Also, every time I look at Jane and see that twinkle in her eyes and grin on her face, I just know that if you were ever to get – shall we say – extra special private time with her, damn, that woman would absolutely curl your toes. Like I said, awesome. Happy weekend, all.
