My Weekend Crush

So Brandi Carlile made it official. When the she spoke with the LA Times earlier this month about her new album, “Give Up the Ghost,” Brandi also causally acknowledged what we all already knew – Yep, she is gay. But that’s not really what matters. Sure, it’s fantastic. One more open, out star means one more little girl in Kansas maybe feels a little less alone tonight. But what really matters here is that voice. Good God, that voice. Spend any time with that voice and it’s hard not to fall head over heels. Strong. Clear. Rootsy. Vulnerable. Seductive. Unmistakable. In a world of cookie-cutter hits and autotuned superstars, Brandi reminds us that true talent needs only a guitar and microphone to mesmerize. Brandi’s songs wrap around you like an old friend, at once familiar and intensely personal. It’s the kind of music you can grow old with. And, with a little luck and a lot of talent, we’ll be hearing from Brandi for years to come. Happy weekend, all.

“Dreams,” the first single off “Give Up the Ghost.”

And my favorite, “That Year.”

p.s. A little “Pride & Joy” for the gals at Again Today.

Brandi's cover of Folsom Prison is one of the best covers I've ever heard - of ANY song.

Brandi--- I fell in love with her when she was the opening act for the Indigo Girls a few years ago. Instalove, I tell you.
And you notice how she always wears vests?
You know, I always assumed she was gay- if not full on girl-lovin' at least emphatically bi. You can't sing about girls the way she does, even the ones who aren't your old GFs, without being further along the Kinsey scale.
Also, have you seen her drummer? Rawr. Just saying. The hotness of butchie baby-dyke. I say that without true confirmation, but I knows what I knows.

To sum up, I know the way you think, madame.

i just recently became a fan when a friend of mine was looking for someone to go to the concert with her. she's amazing live. and she looks great in a vest.

And i agree with Jess...the drummer she's got with her right now is super hot.

I have been her fan for years and years... like seeing her at a coffee shop in seattle.

saw her last night at an amazing concert hall in portland. she brought the house down with folsom and then shut us all up (well, almost all of us) with a cover of mad world.

if you like her stuff, check out a live show. she will make the hairs on the back of your head stand-up!

I saw her on VH1 a couple years back when "The Story" came out, instantly fell into lust and fell into love with her music. She's just sooo delicious, and so real.

I really love it that she hasn't gone mainstream and cookie cutter. A face you could gaze at for hours and a force to be reckoned with...she did a duo with Ha-Ash called "I was already home" and it brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it....

Thank you for this confirmation and yet another hot, REAL babe we can proudly call ours :)

Saw her last weekend for the third time. She is amazing!! Love her acoustic sets, but love the pounding guitars even more!! If you haven't seen her in concert, you must do so soon!! She is so worth it!! And nice of her to provide a butch drummer for those who don't like the more girly girls. :)

Oh Dorothy, I've never loved you more. I knew she was gay, we all knew it - but today, with just one little link, you gave my 'make-brandi-fall-in-love-with-me-and-carry-me-off-to-happy-ever-after' at least some grounding in reality.

I've seen her three times, the last just a week ago in Tucson, and truly, I've never seen such an incredible performer. I'd go see her again, and again, and again - even if I wasn't convinced that she's my soul mate.

(Don't worry, my girlfriend knows all about it) :)

Sigh. I lurve her. I do.

I discovered Brandi's voice on Sirius coffeehouse years ago and I have been in love ever since. Her shows are so very amazing. She does cool work with charitable organizations as well.
The new album is brilliant as expected. They are all so good.
I actually found out about this blog (DS) from the AT fan site.
I appreciate her nonchalant attitude about being gay; I try to be that way about it as well in my professional career.
Thank you for the best weekend crush ever!

Not familiar with her music, but I'll go check it out if she's worthy of weekend crush-age.

I found Brandi through last year's Olympics. My roommates and I were glued to the set at any free minute, and two of us fell in love with "that girl who sings for the GM commercial." I downloaded The Story album and we played it so heavily that one roommate began to hate it; we still can't play any Brandi when she is around. Earlier this week said roommie tried to get my goat by proclaiming that Brandi and Kelly Clarkson are "the same." I came unglued and looked to Twitter to back me up. In the end, I know I'm right: Brandi has a pure, raw, earthy talent that no amount of "Idol"ization can create. I'm not a Kelly hater, I just refuse to lump them together.

So when I opened your blog this afternoon, dear Ms. Snarker, I was elated to see Brandi's beautiful face (and shoulders, and forearms, and and and) staring back...thank you. I'm so glad she's out - I never thought of her "in."

Heck yeah! I saw her in Portland last night so it was nice to check your blog this morning and see this. Brandi has been tops in my book ever since I first saw her live back in 2006. Then, it was her self-titled album that sealed the deal. She really does get better over time.

I went to one of her concerts a few weeks ago and I swear every person in the room- no matter their gender or sexual orientation- was lusting after her.

Or, maybe I was just projecting...

Hot lesbian couple on FlashForward last night. One of the main characters has been revealed as a lesbian.

Thanks for that..I didn't know about Brandi Carlile - and now Johnny Lang and so on and so on...and so found out about Pink's "Dear Mr. President".
Reminds me of Polnareff's "Lettre à France" or Corneille's "Lettre à la maison blanche".
Thank youuuuuu.

oh..and Brandi with Katie Herzig - with "Wish You Well".
How one link, one artiste can have an effect so far away and lead into another road, other artistes.

I love her voice. Sounds like how I imagine Lucinda Williams sounded long ago.

Oh yeah.... She's my weekend crush every week. (The other five days are reserved for Missy Higgins.) I just saw Brandi a couple of weeks ago--one of the best shows I've ever been too. And she is indescribably hot and oh so gay.

Holy cow, I can't believe I've never heard of this woman. That's what I get for living in the midwest. I am going to go buy some music, like right NOW.
