Dog day afternoon

Doggone it, you knew this was coming. After a day of nothing but cat calls, I’ve had to let the dogs out (yes, forgive me, I went there). I had dogs all while growing up. In fact, until I got a cat I considered myself strictly a dog person. So I know that special, unspoken bond between a girl and her dog. Sure, dogs may be man’s best friend, but they’re a woman’s best friend forever. Who’s a good dog? Who is? Who is?

Here kittie, kittie

I would like to interrupt this blog about pop culture, lesbians and lesbians in pop culture (and every now and then politics – but only when I’m feeling too big for my britches) for an important public service announcement. I do not support A Day Without Cats. In fact, I abhor the idea. Cats bring the LOLs to The Internets. Without them, who would play us off? Look, I love all creatures great and small. But to artificially omit one does not uplift the others, but instead diminishes them all. Also, they’re just so damn cute. How could we go without them? And this is coming from someone who for most of her life was an avowed dog person. So with that, for one day only, I will do what I told myself I would never do: cat blog. What can I say? All that stuff about lesbians and their cats? TOTALLY TRUE.

Cat Deeley

Whoops, that last one is the wrong kind of “Cat.” Totally my bad.

Tank Top Tuesday

Coming off a long, lazy three-day weekend, I have to admit that I’m just not ready for the formality of business attire. So, I’m not gonna even try. Instead, let’s revel in the casual charm of the tank top. I mean, look at Keira Knightley. Does she look even remotely interested in going into the office? Whether working out, working hard or hardly working, it’s simply the best way to ease into any work week – abbreviated or not. Thanks, ladies, for reminding us that the tank top is always the preferred attire when…

…running errands, like Hilary Swank.Of course, she is taking that “running” part a little too literally. Overachiever.

…walking the dogs, like Olivia Wilde.Never before have I meant it more sincerely when I’ve said, “Lucky dogs!”

…walking a dog and a baby, like Jessical Biel.Sheesh, another overachiever.

…checking your cell, like Evangeline Lilly. If only it had GPS, this whole “Lost” thing could have been over a whole lot quicker.

…rubbing in your ability to sunbath to your undead boyfriend, like Anna Paquin.Does anyone else have to fight the urge to scream “SOOKEH!” whenever you see her?

…considering just how hot it will be to co-star with Eliza Dushku, like Summer Glau.Joss Whedon is a total babe magnet.

…relaxing before killing Bill, like Uma Thurman & Zoe Bell.Behold the beauty of always having a spare.

…arm wrestling, like Rose McGowan & Rosario Dawson.Clearly they’re wrestling to see who has to take a shower first. I call it a draw and say they shower together. Compromise is truly a beautiful thing.

Day Laborer

So today’s a holiday here in these here United States. So I’m going to make like my fellow countrymen and vegetate. But first, in celebration of my impending laziness, how about a 3-minute dance party? Happy Labor Day, all.

My Weekend Crush

Lean a little closer and I’ll let you in on a little secret. Before Rachel Maddow, before Christiane Amanpour, before Meredith Vieira, my first newswoman crush was on Diane Sawyer. Now, my love for Diane is multifaceted. She is smart, sophisticated, steady, serene and serious, yet never takes herself too seriously. She has interviewed Presidents and dictators, pop stars and the King of Pop. She is, quite simply, just a damn fine journalist. So, imagine my delight when I heard she would take over as anchor for Charles Gibson when he retires from “ABC World News.” For those counting at home, that means two of the big three nighttime network anchors will be ladies. We are women, hear us roar the headlines. So now, after making the appropriate disclaimer about how women should be judged on their qualifications and intellect, can I also just say: Holy crap, how fucking sexy is Diane Sawyer?

And, at 63, she just keeps getting better with age. No, seriously. I mean it. Hubba hubba.

One look at her in her signature I’m-thoughtful-yet-attentive hand on chin pose and my knees go to jelly.

And throw in a cute animal and I’m all a quiver.

I loved her when she had lesbian hair.

And when she interviewed a lesbian.

I love her on a cover.

And when her head is covered.

I’d let my Diane lust lie dormant for years, because – let’s face it – I’m not up in time to catch the morning shows. But now that she will be back in the nighttime where she belongs, I can once again enjoy the way her hair falls coyly across her right eye.

Break me off a piece of that breaking news. Happy weekend, all.

Please hold

My Photoshop has broken and is now ruining my life. Please hold and I hope to have a post up for you a bit later today. Sometimes, better living through technology is a lie. Like right about now.

UPDATE: So, pour a little out for my Photoshop today, homies. Because it died a quick and horrible death last night. My attempts at resuscitation today were for naught. As a result, I won’t be able to deliver the post as promised . My apologies. But I’ll try to supersize tomorrow’s Crush to make up for today’s void. Until then, please accept this video as an accurate visual representation of how I’ve felt all damn day.

Candid camera

For all the art and craft that goes into preparing a perfect photoshoot, sometimes I rather prefer a plain old snapshot. Something about that spontaneity and simplicity just can’t be matched, no matter how hard you try to plan it. I’m just glad someone planned enough to have a camera nearby. And with that, say cheese ladies.

Sarah Shahi and Yvonne StrahovskiI would have given a kidney to be in that pool. Possibly both of them. (p.s. Ye of little faith, it really is them. Here they are pre-pool, wetness and what I can only assume was several shots of tequila.)

Olivia Wilde

She just found out Thirteen is going to be involved in an illicit, sweaty affair this season with both Cuddy and Cameron. What? That’s how it’s playing out in my head and I’m sticking with it.

This is what I woke up to Sunday morning. Some people don’t like Twitter, I think they just haven’t seen this picture yet.

Shit just got real

This is the story (true story!) of six lesbians picked by Mama Chaiken to live in Los Angeles and have their lives taped to find out what happens when lesbians stop being polite and start getting real: “The Real L Word: Los Angeles.”

Sounds like a joke; really, really isn’t. Ilene Chaiken is back, like the unkillable creature from every horror movie you can’t believe you’re still watching at 1 a.m., with a new series for Showtime. Ilene has signed a nine-episode deal with her former employer to bring back “The L Word,” sort of. This time it will be a reality series following six real, live lesbians around Los Angeles.

Oh, fucking hell, where do I begin? No, seriously, WHERE? First, “The Real L Word?” That’s its real title? How unspeakably lame. They couldn’t even come up with a new name? Look, we already have “The Real World,” “The Real Housewives” and even the really silly lesbian reality series “Gimme Sugar.” So how is this in any way original? This is groundbreaking television? And what makes it truly diabolical is that it’s called “The Real L Word: Los Angeles,” which means Mama C clearly thinks of it as a continuing series. I can see it limping along just like the real “The Real World” with “TRLW: New York,” “TRLW: San Francisco,” “TRLW: Cancun.” For all I know, Mama C is really thinking big and already plotting for “TRLW: Mars.” Which is also, coincidentally, where I would love to send her.

Oh kittens, this is just so, well, sad. As much as I desperately want and think we rightfully deserve more and better representation of gay women in the media, I sincerely doubt this is the way to get there. While in theory reality shows can be used to illuminate the human condition, in reality they have exploited our more salacious side. It’s all about hair pulling and hot tubs, hookups and hangovers. Could a reality series about the real lives of lesbians be a good thing? Sure. Do I trust Chaiken to take a thoughtful, real look at lesbian lives? Um, you saw the finale, right?
