Mother, Belle

Since we’re in a Mother-ing mood, have you heard about “Montreal, Ma Belle?” I’ve been behind in my queer cinema this year, so news of this Canadian film escaped me until just now. But now, I’m kind of obsessed. Why? Because it stars Queer Ally Extraordinaire Joan Chen as, and I quote from the movie description, “a Chinese Canadian immigrant wife and mother living in Montreal, Quebec, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery when she meets and falls in love with Camille (Charlotte Aubin), a free-spirited younger woman.”

May-December with The Joan Chen? From “Twin Peaks” to “Wild Side” to “Saving Face” and the new “The Wedding Banquet,” Joan has made queer allyship a tenet of her performances. So, hell yeah I’m excited to see her play gay again. And this scene with the glass of water? Come on, that’s some iconic Mother shit.
