Kiss the girl

I’m not sure if there’s another show on TV right now that makes me scream “KISS HER!” more at my screen. Now I’ve expounded on just exactly how gay “Rizzoli & Isles” is before. A lot. Seriously, I won’t shut up about it. But with each passing episode the show seems to get even more gay. Lover’s spats. Chocolate apologies. Come on, honey, try my beer. This show is so gay. So gay. I don’t know if Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander are intentionally playing up their insane chemistry (one would think not give the former’s political predilections), but it is undeniable. I think we’ll all find out how much they intent to flirt with the subtext next week with the show’s Very Special Lesbian Episode, “I Kissed a Girl.” Jane goes undercover as The Gay to catch a killer. And, just like a jealous girlfriend, Maura insists on filling out Jane’s fake online dating profile. She has her looking for a “Lipstick Lesbian.” Projecting much, darling?

Soon lesbians won’t say they’re “butch” or “femme,” but “Rizzoli” or “Isles.” For the record, I’m a Rizzoli.

But the true test of any show’s ultimate gayness is whether the femslash YouTube videos have surfaced. Welcome to the gayborhood, Rizzoli & Isles, you’ve arrived.

  2. my girlfriend and i sit on the couch watching this show every week and can't believe how gay this "non-gay" show really is. it is so gay, it is quickly approaching xena gay. i'm already dreading the fall when this show will leave my TV. and it takes a lot for me to lament the season of college football and octoberfest beer.

I'm trying to like this show, but it's hard. Harmon is a treat to look at, for sure. God, those cheekbones! Her world view sticks in the craw however. And even with Lorraine Bracco and Bruce McGill in support, both of whom I've loved in other things, I still find it all pretty insipid and awkward. The writing blows and takes the whole thing down with it. I realize that this isn't meant to be gritty drama, but it isn't skillful enough to actually be frothy. And for all the seemingly intentional subtext, we regularly get clobbered with the 'would be boyfriend'. At least they have the grace to make them go away at the end of episode. That being said, I'll probably still tune in next week. Hey, even the deep can shallow.

OMG - it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO gay! IFC must be kicking herself - can't you just see Bette and Tina in these roles - god, they even have the tall, dark, feisty, beauty, and the fair, sweeter, sensible blonde.

  7. I have been wanting Sasha Alexander (aka Isles) to be gay since NCIS!!!!!!

I do not follow this show, but I need you to blog about it if any gayness appears. For personal research purposes and because I am too lazy to check it myself.

    That is all.

No wait... I want a cupcake. Yep, that is pretty much it.

  8. I've loved these two characters ever since Tess Gerritsen created 'em, and she's now published her 8th novel with them as the protagonists. But in the books they aren't Lesbians either, so it's not a case of changing a core element for mass market TV. So if you want to "meet" two strongly drawn, independent females--each with her own compelling flaws and vulnerabilities--read Gerristen's books. I,too, am enjoying the wonderful sexual tensions the two Actors have brought to their roles. They play off each other very well, and I can actually put aside my INTENSE dislike for Harmon's real life politics and public comments.

  9. You're screaming "Kiss Her" at your television because Rizzzoli and Isles is heterosexual "Nikki and Nora" the failed pilot about two lesbian detectives that was never picked up by UPN.

Well I for one am not about day dreaming about characters being gay anymore.

That's why we always get sh*tty shows, because we "dream" to fill in the blanks.

I'll start watching this show when I read that they actually kissed or had a date. I get more action on Pretty Little Liars and that's a shame because I am a grown woman who prefers adult women not teenagers.

  10. I am loving this show. Rizzoli is such a dyke!

BTW, there *are* gay republicans. Just sayin'.

  11. This is *my* favorite montage video...

And that's all footage from the pilot. Seriously, so gay.

And fanfiction.net already has a ton of fabulous femslash fic. I'm sure it has some SFW stuff, but I haven't read it... ;)

  12. P.S. When is AfterEllen going to start doing recaps for R&I? They did them for Desperate Housewives when it had the little lezzy subplot. And this is far gayer than that.

  13. Log Cabin Republican over here. *waves lone hand*

OH MY GOD, everything about this show is gay. It's so gay that it's almost painful for me to watch the show, knowing that they're never going to make out.

@Mormon Lesbian _ I think AE only does recaps for shows with an actual lesbian subplot/character (and even then, they don't always do it for all shows) So I don't think we should expect it any time soon. There's a gal who has a blog on Livejournal that does pic spam/summaries of the episodes though. They're very amusing.

  15. Woot Woot for the best non-lesbian....lesbian show on TV! I love me some R&I... an epically frustrated but fierce girl on girl love!!!

Love the article. And yep, so gay. You should check out the fan videos over on LJ, too. This one caught my eye:

  17. I've never watched this show, but thanks to those little clips, I've now placed it on my DVR to record every episode! Even if it's just innuendo and subplots, I'll take what I can get!

YouTube aside, if you look at r_and_i_news on LiveJournal (or the feed on Dreamwidth) http://community.livejournal.com/r_and_i_news/ it's pretty much clear that the fandom for this show is all femslash. I mean...how could it not be... The subtext writes itself...

  19. LMAO! Omg this is so freaking hilarious!

    I'm glad I'm not the only Rozzoli..haha

hmm..I'm still watching the show bcos of the gayness..the crime storyline..oh god! bore me to death and very predictable! this is no CSI:NY

    Oddly enough, I'm an Isles.

  21. I'm an Isles, too.

I adore this show. I haven't gotten this giggly over fandom since the ol' Alex/Olivia days.

And you know what, my marriage is all the better for it. :-)

  22. I care less about if they ever make out (I mean, the sexual tension is enough for me). I just really don't want them to start making out/dating guys. At least so far they've had awful dates and then gone running back into one another's arms (Unless something else has gone done in the recent episode... TNT posts the episodes at a week behind online).

  23. I'm going to have to watch this show, aren't I?

  24. For real this is the next Xena. Rizzoli is Xena and Isles is Gabrielle.

And I'm sure this show will disappoint us eventually ... but the pairing is irresistible. There will be amazing fanfic. It is the next Xena / Voyager for fanfic. Something fresh with a ton of subtext and maintext to riff off of.

Ending with a preposition there because I am lame.

  25. And now Sasha Alexander is pregnant.
They just better not write it into the show. Because that would just ruin lives (well, mine at least).

Sasha looks like she could be Jessica Capshaw's cousin.

mmhmmmmmm!yuh, I can't watch this show, it's too late &too scary but , I could not agree more ~ they SOOOO need to stop goofin'- torturing us and just KISS though why stop there really … I'm all for starting slow- but the PLT (pre-lesbian tension-YES! another snarkerism I learned last year- which I my self have yet to remedy, sigh, any way, I digress…) the plt is hard to take … what do they have to lose÷÷??????? here's hoping and my screen name is sweetfire, btw

  28. Oh. My. God. Thank you for recommending this series! After one episode, I'm hooked! The chemistry just crackles and pops. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's already fanfic out there.
