When the she spoke with the LA Times earlier this month about her new album, “Give Up the Ghost,” Brandi also causally acknowledged what we all already knew – Yep, she is gay. But that’s not really what matters. Sure, it’s fantastic. One more open, out star means one more little girl in Kansas maybe feels a little less alone tonight. But what really matters here is that voice. Good God, that voice. Spend any time with that voice and it’s hard not to fall head over heels. Strong. Clear. Rootsy. Vulnerable. Seductive. Unmistakable. You know, I always assumed she was gay- if not full on girl-lovin' at least emphatically bi. You can't sing about girls the way she does, even the ones who aren't your old GFs, without being further along the Kinsey scale.

ReplyDeletesaw her last night at an amazing concert hall in portland. she brought the house down with folsom and then shut us all up (well, almost all of us) with a cover of mad world.

oh... and her drummer on this tour is allison miller. great drummer who has played with ani difranco and was/is with erin mckeown. she had a pretty good article about her in curve a few years back.
ReplyDeleteI saw her on VH1 a couple years back when "The Story" came out, instantly fell into lust and fell into love with her music. She's just sooo delicious, and so real.
ReplyDeleteI really love it that she hasn't gone mainstream and cookie cutter. A face you could gaze at for hours and a force to be reckoned with...she did a duo with Ha-Ash called "I was already home" and it brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it....

Saw her last weekend for the third time. She is amazing!! Love her acoustic sets, but love the pounding guitars even more!! If you haven't seen her in concert, you must do so soon!! She is so worth it!! And nice of her to provide a butch drummer for those who don't like the more girly girls. :)

I discovered Brandi's voice on Sirius coffeehouse years ago and I have been in love ever since. Her shows are so very amazing. She does cool work with charitable organizations as well.

i love some brandi.
I found Brandi through last year's Olympics. My roommates and I were glued to the set at any free minute, and two of us fell in love with "that girl who sings for the GM commercial." I downloaded The Story album and we played it so heavily that one roommate began to hate it; we still can't play any Brandi when she is around. Earlier this week said roommie tried to get my goat by proclaiming that Brandi and Kelly Clarkson are "the same." I came unglued and looked to Twitter to back me up. In the end, I know I'm right: Brandi has a pure, raw, earthy talent that no amount of "Idol"ization can create. I'm not a Kelly hater, I just refuse to lump them together.

Heck yeah! I saw her in Portland last night so it was nice to check your blog this morning and see this. Brandi has been tops in my book ever since I first saw her live back in 2006. Then, it was her self-titled album that sealed the deal. She really does get better over time.
