Gender Fuck Thursday

Mmmm, tasty, tasty androgyny. I’ve always been a sucker for a lady in a suit. The blending of the traditionally masculine and the wonderfully feminine is just, well, yum. And the blurrier the lines (hello, Tilda Swinton, come sit closer to me) often the better. But it’s more than just the look; it’s also the swagger. Thumbs in pockets. Shoulders squared. Jaw set. How quickly can that lead to jacket on floor? Shirt crumpled. Skin sweaty… Wait…where was I? Oh, yeah. Fuck yeah, gender fuck. [Click any and all to enlarge.]

  7. It's amazing how absolutely nonentity Tilda Swinton can look, and then she can turn around and look stunning. I'm in the middle of watching "Benjamin Button." Can you tell? :-D Thanks for these photos. They're terrific!

  17. my favs...
tilda, is just amazing. she can make keanu reeves look good. she was an amazingly hot gabrielle.

alicia keys, wowza...i love that look, that sort of 70's gangster look she's got going on there.

i love me some same ronson, though, so i'm partial.

kelly clarkston looks a little too, something, i'm not buying it. and i wish natalie portman wasn't wearing that mustache, then she's be amazing.

and i feel a little dirty for saying it, but seeing alicia in that suit reminds me of that aerosmith video from the late 90's, she and liv tyler in their uniforms running away? she's dressed in drag watching her strip...brings back my catholic school girl memories...

    thanks ms. snarker, as always

You know the mezzo-sopranos and contraltos of the opera world have been playing the genderfuck game (very well I might add) for centuries. If you want a primer check out for starters the queen of the 'trouser-role" Vesselina Kasarova:

Or how about this - just to show the opera girls can bring out the big guns with the best of them:

And maybe just a white tank top shot for completeness...

  23. OK, I like Gender Fuck Thursdays even more than tank top tuesdays.

    PLeeeeeaze make this a regular!

And you are a magician at finding extraordinary photos. So here's a list of other women you can hopefully get great androg pics of:
    Cate Blanchett
    Tilda Swinton (more please)
    Jodie Foster
    kirsten Stewart
    Ellen Page

And to answer Alaina's question about Tilda, here's an answer from one of her recent interviews:

MEGHAN O’ROURKE: You’ve taken a lot of parts that seem to challenge fixed notions about gender identity. I’m thinking of Orlando or the archangel Gabriel in Constantine. Do you consciously seek out those roles?

TILDA SWINTON: Well, I don’t consciously seek out any roles. I consciously seek out conversations with filmmakers. I consciously seek out material, and very often that material will be about identity. Not gender identity, but I do realize, as time rolls on and I try to find the lowest common denominator of all my work, that I’m constantly thinking about transformation. I’m intrigued by the idea of pressures that people put themselves under (and are put under by society) to fix themselves in a single identity and not transform. I’m interested to take that position and place it within a story where that identity is challenged—where a precipice, if you like, is presented to that person. You transform, or you fail or you fall. You either change or you know you will perish, as it were. Maybe because I am a performer; maybe because I am an artist; maybe because I’m a freak, I don’t know. But it’s always occurred to me that transformation is inevitable and constantly available. And it’s never occurred to me to hang on to any identity for dear life and fight off anything else.

Sigourney Weaver is just unbelievably sexy. WOW!

I love the concept of Gender Fuck Thursday- hope you keep it up!

One of my favorite gender fuck images is the now classic 1993 Cover of Vanity Fair with kd Lang in a barber's chair being "shaved" by Cindy Crawford. Just fabulous!

I can't get over the attention that Sigourney Weaver is getting here. But she really does, truly, absolutely, spectacularly look like a fella. Best drag king-but-still-hot ever, methinks.
