My Weekend Crush

My thing for crime procedurals is no secret. I love them and unabashedly so. Over the years one show has grown on me with its combination of crime and, well, chemistry. No, not the chemistry of swirling beakers or spraying luminol. The chemistry of characters. “Bones” wasn't a favorite of mine when it started. The chemistry didn't quite click – yet. Still I watched, even if at first it was just to see what Angel was up to. But then I kept watching because it was impossible not to watch Emily Deschanel. We're talking bone structure for days, people. Over the past four seasons “Bones” and particularly Emily have made me a fan.

What I like about her intractable portrayal of Temperance Brennan is that while she is the queen of the squints, she gives Bones enough shared humanity and a healthy dose of heat to make her sympathetic. Also, it's cool that she knows martial arts. What? Smart gals who kick ass are a weakness. While “Bones” is a crime show, it's also a comedy with “Moonlighting”-worthy sexual tension. And it's that mix of light, dark and sexy that keeps us coming back week after week without wanting to slit our wrists or double bolt our doors afterward. (Seriously, I watched my first “Criminal Minds” recently and was so freaked out afterward I Googled home alarm systems.) Plus, seriously, Bones in librarian glasses? Hot. Bones not knowing that librarian glasses are hot? Double hot. Happy weekend, all.

p.s. I still hate Sweets, though. Bring back Zack!

  1. You should read the books. Though I think she's geekier. The settings are more interesting too, Montreal and North Carolina, written by an author who's lived in both places. I remember her describing Tempe and her maybe-boyfriend Ryan going into some dubious crime-ridden Montreal neighborhood and then suddenly thinking "wait a minute, I live there!"

I mean it about the geekiness - be prepared for the occasional two-page disquisition on the order in which insects attack a decomposing body or the like.

  2. I also love the books - she's older in them too, isn't she? But still - Emily Deschanel could easily be my weekend chrush:-)

What about Cam? I love Cam in Bones (Tamara Taylor). She's damn hot. O_O And Angela is a crazy sweet (Michaela Conlin).

A great show with very good acting.

I hate to say it, but Sweets is growing on me :)

Angela, on the other hand, has always intrigued me. Apart from the fact that she's played by Michaela Conlin - who's mixed heritage Asian - and a sweetie pie, now that she's broken up with Hodgins (who irritates me to death) and dating Roxie....mmm.

Yes, I know, their relationship is hardly likely to go on for long. But I'm enjoying it so far.

  5. i laughed out loud at the librarian glasses scene. definitely hot.

i almost stopped watching over the whole zack thing at the end of last season, though - it just seemed so contrived, so wildly out of character....

OMG! Bones this week was SO good! I was riveted and then something came up at my house and I missed the ending! I am soooo bummed. I have to watch it all online just to see the ending...which is okay, since I really liked this particular eppie so much.

I laughed my ass off at the librarian glasses scene.

The fact that I've had that fantasy too doesn't hurt.

And how amazing that they would have so many suspects on one airplane!

  10. Sweets is growing on me in an odd sort of way. I do miss Zach. He was completely the male version of "Bones."

I kept putting off watching it, then caught up on all four seasons in about six weeks.

Your assessment is spot on. For all the rotty bodies and gigantic set, it's still all about the interplay between the characters.

I think my fav. geek thing is when they had to take care of the baby and she was waving her fingers at it, "Phalanges, phalanges." Adorkable.

  12. I was afraid I wouldn't like the show without Zack but its still really good.

Sweets is from Freaks and Geeks so how can't you dislike him.

  13. I've only recently started watching "Bones" due to the AE coverage of the "lesbian/bisexual" storyline. I was never a fan of "Angel" either. But being a psychologist, I can't help but think Emily is playing Bones as a tad bit Asperger's Syndrome...in a fun kind of way of course.

  14. Bones is a great show, and I in fact liked the ending of last season.

I love their chemistry and I like that Bones make me look like a normal and well adjusted person.
But then I like the word phalanges and use it whenever I can.

Sweets is all right, in fact I like him more than I liked Zack. But I still don't get what he is supposed to do on the show...

I have to confess that on my short list of appointment television "Bones" appears at the very top of the list... this is due in large part to Emily Deschanel and her brilliantly nuanced performance as 'Bones'.
This is also one of the few (if not only) shows where I am actually giddy at watching the weekly unfolding of the lead actors relationship (in this case: Booth and Bones), as David and Emily bring so much to the characters and their charm just makes you root for them so much more!
Emily, along with her sister Zooey are two of my favorite actresses of both the big and small screen.

I have recently been catching up on this show. Just bought season 3 on DVD. I love Tempe and Seely and their chemistry is completely electric. I've been DVR'ing the recent season and I can't wait to watch the Angela/Roxy thing unfold. Although... I have admit... I kinda like Hodgins so I'm sad they will be breaking up. He's a fun dork. Unlike Zach who is an annoying dork. IMNSHO.
