Admittedly, Lindsay's coming out process has been the most fascinating to watch. Having one of America's hottest starlets potentially be part of a lesbian relationship was like fresh carrion to the gossip vultures. But that's not what made it fascinating. Nor was it because of her status among the paparazzi princesses who crashed and burned to a chorus of flashbulbs. No, what made it fascinating is that her experience seems to mirror that of so many young gay or questioning women today.
Lindsay found someone she liked. That someone happened to be a girl. So they started hanging out together and going everywhere together. And soon they were just together. And they never hid it. Sure, they never confirmed it until this week either. But there they were shopping together and traveling together and attending parties together and working together. They held hands. They cuddled. They kissed. They were out without being out.
Then earlier this week while calling into Loveline to talk about their friend DJ AM's plane crash, they finally confirmed what all our eyes already saw:
DJ: Now, you guys, you and Samantha have been going out for how long now?
Lindsay: (laughter)
DJ: Like two years? One year? Five months? Two months?
Lindsay: A long...a very long time.
DJ: Well good, well I hope you guys stay together. You are a very lovely looking couple.
Lindsay: Thank you very much.
I haven't always been a fan of Lindsay's. Actually, I was a fan of hers before I wasn't a fan of hers (call it my inner John Kerry). While I'll never support the vapid excess that led to her reckless behavior, I'll be the first to applaud her for pulling herself together and not squandering her talent. And talent she has, the real deal. Just re-watch “Mean Girls,” trust me. So it's unfair to lump her in with the famous for being famous Paris-Kim-Nicole set.
Yet with that simple confirmation Lindsay has hopefully forever closed the door on the last bit of so-called salaciousness in her life. It's only fun to gossip about rumors. Facts, well, they take all the naughtiness out of the equation. Ellen and Portia go to the supermarket and the movies and the car wash together all the time. But while the paparazzi still follow them, you don't see them splashed across on the gossip sites every day. They're old news – just another boring happy couple. And, now, maybe Lindsay and Samantha are one, too. Gosh, wouldn't that be refreshing.
Collective "Duh" yes ! Old news..
ReplyDeleteBut collective "welcome to the outspoken out team" nonetheless !
We could use a few more boring couples like these two lovebirds. Jorja Fox? Anyone ?
Anyways, we're happy to have you on team gay, Lindsay !
FINALLY, right??
ReplyDeleteSheesh!
Damn she's cute. :P
You have no idea how freaking happy this makes me.
ReplyDeleteTHIS JUSTIFIES MY SEXUALITY.
Okay, not really at all, but growing up I used to have the biggest crush on Lindsay Lohan, before she went starlet and crashed and burned, before Mean Girls, before she was really developed even. She's maybe a year older than me, so it fit that I'd have a crush on someone my own age. I used to plaster my walls with every magazine article and picture I could get of her. She wasn't just a star I had a crush on -- I kind of really idolized her because she had (HAS) such amazing and overwhelming amounts of talent.
But never in a million years would I have ever thought of her as a lesbian. Sure, I dreamed about. SURE, I prayed for it. But for it to actually become a reality? It gives me a whole new justification for my epic gaydar. Apparently I've known she was gay for years, so I'm glad the rest of the world finally caught up.
All joking aside, I really do wish them the best of luck. They seem really happy together.

Duh? Maybe...only if you follow the news about Lindsay, which I haven't just because she was part of the whole Paris-Nicole combo which is of no interest to me. Thus, I have never liked Lindsay, although it is evident that she has talent. But now...well... I know it is really shallow of my part - I know! But now, I like her a little bit...a whole lot more:) Way to go! Besides, someone mentioned something about it at the bar the other night, saying that 'there is no way she is a lesbian just because she is so cute!' Whaaa? I know! Read that statement again! Just for folks like those, I want every good looking gay woman out there to be 'out' - one way or the other! Geez! What's wrong with people!
ReplyDeleteWe are all beautiful, ladies! Have a good Wednesday!
Beautiful couple!
ReplyDeleteDuh doesn't make it less good. What I admire about her is how matter of fact she has been about the whole thing. They make a very cute couple and I wish them all the best.
ReplyDeleteBest article about LiLo I've read. I'd joking compared myself to her, but more than ever, I really feel it (your line about the mirror is so! true!). Anyway, great writing and great for Lindsay-- seriously. (Note: does anyone else remember when AfterEllen had to run a long preface to their first blurb about Lindsay, saying they apologized for having to cover the gossipy content? Aw, and look how far this relationship has come!)
ReplyDeleteClay’s coming out is actually very important to a lot of us. I know I’m not the only one who had a conversation like this today:
ReplyDeleteMe: Heeeeeey
My best friend’s Mom (who I spend Christmas with): Hey Kate
Me: Did you see it? Did you see it? Did you see it? Did you see it?
My best friend’s mom: Marc already called me about it.
Me: Laughs for like 45 seconds
My best friend’s mom: Are you just going to keep laughing?
Me: Who’s house? Say what? Run’s house.
My best friend’s mom: You know you two weren’t the only ones to tell me he was gay.
Me: Yea, but we said it the loudest.
My best friend’s mom: Kate, it’s not becoming to brag.
Me: It would be to Clay, if I were a dude.
Then I proceed to torture her with more “I told you so”s for like 5 more minutes. I was literally grinning for the rest of the day.
I always wondered why my well honed gaydar was pinging when I saw her movies...heh. Good luck to them both, I hope the popo's will leave them alone more now.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for those two - Lohan & Ronson!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, it makes me very happy to see someone who has been through so much in the media. She's grounded in her body and seems actually happy....
and yes, she is really good at acting!!
Kudos to the two for doing it their way!
Many Blessings
Jorja Fox ohhhh yeah...(nice idea "lezmac")
ReplyDeletei've never really been a Lohan fan and kind of just shook my head when she got her butt into hot water over stupid shit....but she's really pulled her shit together and, although i was skeptical at first about her and Ronson, i do respect her candid, non-chalant attitude about their relationship...i wish them both the best for an enduring strong union
Lindsay finally seems right on track. Heck, wouldn't most women be "right on track," with another chick? That's my opinion anyway.
ReplyDeleteDear Ms. Snarker,
ReplyDeleteA pleasure, as always, to read your work. Here's my response to your post:

I'm so glad you wrote this entry. I had kind of been waiting for awhile for you to comment on this, since I remember a LONG time ago you sort of jokingly hypothesized that Lindsay and Samantha were together...I have been with my girlfriend for about 3 years without officially "coming out" to my family (though all of my friends know) and while I know i'm not famous so it's different, I guess I just assumed they would get the picture...we live together, we share a bed, we go everywhere together...duh, right? it makes me happy to see that i'm not the only one who finds it unnecessary to publicize my relationship and sexuality...yes, i think it's important for people to encounter gay people in order to break down stereotypes and ignorance, but i also think...we are who we are, we like who we like! i don't identify as gay or anything else really...i'm just a girl presently in love with another girl.
