My Weekend Crush

I’m not much of a “Grey’s Anatomy” watcher these days. I stopped my occasionally viewing a while back, despite general affection for Calzona and cast, because I’ve always found navel-gazing doctors a little, you know, oooof. But what I’ve appreciated for all 10 years of the show is its gainful employment of the singular Sandra Oh and her portrayal of the even more singular Dr. Cristina Yang. Brusque, ambitious, competitive, talented. She has not time for niceties, there’s work to be done. This makes her a role model for pushy women everywhere. She’s pushy because she is smart and deserves it. Most pushy women are. In many other settings – say perhaps the executive editorship of the New York Times – being pushy as a woman can be seen as some sort of fatal character flaw. But on “Grey’s Anatomy” she is allowed to be a heroine – not to mention best friend to its title character. I like that, I’ll miss that. I’m also sad to see another Asian-American major female character leave television. There are so few as is. But I’m happy for Sandra to finally be free to do other things. And I hope to see much more of her – hopefully still dancing it out with style – in the future. Happy weekend, all.

Rushing back for That last dance off with Meredith was sensational
I will seriously miss Dr Yang
Hope that she comes back for an eventual series finale

  3. Did anyone else besides me think when Yang pulled Mer into the on-call room, something else was going to happen? (Dirty mind!)

  4. The first movie Sandra Oh will be appearing in, very soon, is call
"Tammy" co-written by Melissa McCarthy, She's playing a lesbian (!!!) in a relationship with Kathy Bates.

I don't think its a big role, but its a start.

I agree that Sandra Oh's embodiment of Christina Yang's character was one of the major highlights of GA, and seeing that last dance off scene made me sad about the loss of a distinctly nuanced and complex friendship between two women on TV.

I'm glad she was given a hospital as a send off!

The first 5 season's Grey's (IMHO) was the best show on tv, then as most long term shows do it went south.

Sandra Oh was great, is still great. I stopped watching for awhile because Calzone stunk up the place, annoying and unreal.

I drop in every once in awhile. Caught the Christina good-bye, etc. Not a very good show anymore. oh well....

  6. Love those two. Smart powerful sexy women....and the kind of friendship every woman needs. Too often we forget the "you are the sun" thing......

When I'd had my fill of whiny bitches, I could always count on Sandra/Dr. Yang to put things right. Thankfully, Melinda May/Ming-Na is around so I am not left with whining female tv characters forever. But she will be missed. I loved her stare right before she cut your heart out with her words.

  8. I finally watched the finale. Tears. A great send-off. I'm glad they refrained from having her shot, stabbed, blown up, hit by a vehicle, or whatever other painful death they could have sent her off to. This was great.
