So, remember how I was super excited about the return of a show with inferred lesbian subtext? Guess what, I’m also super excited about the return of a show with real lesbian stories. See. I’m no monster. I can be a rational, fact-based consumer of televised programming, too. And, believe me, my excitement is very, very real. It seems like forever since we last got a taste of Lip Service, probably because it has been kind of forever. The first season ended in November 2010. So we’ve gone well over a year without having a major show on our televisions just about women who sleep with women. Granted, it’s about more than that. We aren’t just our naughty bits. But, be honest, we really love this show because we don’t have to use a straight filter or gay goggles when watching. We can just enjoy the pure, unadulterated lady lust. Can I get an ahymen?
You know, as much as we complained – and boy did we complain – about The L Word, we also watched the hell out of it. Because it was ours and ours alone. And there is still, in 2012, a real hunger to see ourselves reflected back to us. While representation has gotten better – we’re sprinkled through a dozen or so North American shows right now – it’s still in many ways limited. And while it’s great to be part of ensembles, heavens is it fun to watch us all in a group.
p.s. What in good God have they done to poor Laura Fraser’s face? It’s like “When Photoshop Attacks: Demon Head Replacement.” Well at least Hot Cop looks good. We’d have come after them if torches if they touched Hot Cop’s face.
p.s. I got so excited for the lesbian action I forgot to tell you that Lip Service returns Friday, April 20 on the BBC3.
Thank you Ms Snarker. I am so glad it wasn't just me who thought Laura Fraser's face had undergone a little p'shopping!
ReplyDeleteTalk about Alien invasion \o/
Umm, No you aren't surprised about the retrn of Lip Service.
ReplyDeleteFace it, Dorothy Surrenders only refences real lesbian content to maintain some aura of authenticity with lesbians. This site rather pretend and imagine lesbianism where it doesn't exist.
I mean where's the lesbian subtext in Rizzoli and Isles? Making cute and funny faces and comments to each another doesn't count as lesbian subtext, it's what teens do and I know that your readership consists primarily of teens, but why mislead them and cause them to grow up even more confused than they already are about their sexuality?
RE: Anon post
ReplyDeleteI am a lesbian and I find DS to be one of the most lesbian authentic sites out there.
Ms Snarker has a way of expressing a lot of my 'lesbian' thoughts, emotions, and feelings in a most well written and unique way that I wish I was able to do in my daily life.
Rock on DS and keep posting!
Re first Anon post...
ReplyDeleteLOLWUT?
How long have you been following The Amazing Ms. Snarker - about 5 minutes? Just enough to leave a snotty, condescending comment for which you will be hysterically laughed at?
I'm not going to go into detail about all the things wrong with your subtext issues - you'll find The Snarkster covers that far more eloquently than I could in her previous blog post - but do yourself a favour and stop taking yourself so flipping seriously. I cannot understand how subtext could confuse these teens you're so terribly worried about; if anything, it encourages them to find their baby gay selves in mostly heteronormative programmes.
Also: I am quite a bit past my teens and a proud fan of...well, basically everything Dorothy Snarker has ever written. I'm a major lurker but I do pop up occasionally to stick my oar in, and if I haven't done so already I want to thank Ms. Snarker for providing too many lulz to list.
Oh Anon, go back to your island of Lesbian Rules and enforce your sharia law. Go on!
ReplyDeleteAny date on when the Lip Service is airing? I've been looking for its return too DS. So desperate for some a meal of lesbian stories instead of the little tidbits we've been surviving on.
"So, remember how I was super excited about the return of a show with inferred lesbian subtext?"
ReplyDeleteSeeing as that was only yesterday, what would it say about us if we didn't darling?!
"Guess what, I’m also super excited about the return of a show with real lesbian stories."
Well, I'm glad someone is...
"See. I’m no monster."
Darling, I know *that*!!! ;)
"I can be a rational, fact-based consumer of televised programming, too. And, believe me, my excitement is very, very real."
Frankly darling, I am far more excited about the news of a certain Ms Jaime Murray kissing *yet another* woman! (I am hot footing it straight over to YouTube the minute I get this off! :D )
"It seems like forever since we last got a taste of Lip Service"
And how our lives have been tragically bereft as a result... I think not!!!
"We really love this show because we don’t have to use a straight filter or gay goggles when watching."
No, but we do have to use *protective* goggles when it comes to some of those God awful 'love' scenes! Truth be told, I found myself (in a weird childhood sort of a 'Doctor Who' esque regression) trembling uncontrollably behind the sofa before the end of the dreaded mortuary shagfest!
"We can just enjoy the pure, unadulterated lady lust. Can I get an ahymen?"
You may have a conditional and somewhat subdued one darling.
"You know, as much as we complained – and boy did we complain – about The L Word, we also watched the hell out of it. Because it was ours and ours alone."
I very much doubt anyone else would have it... :)
Still, one mustn't be overly critical. Especially before one has even seen the damn thing! Thus, I wish the 'Lip Service' crew all the best for their somewhat delayed premiere and look forward to having my 'cruel' cynicism dashed against the nearest rocks!
Gie it laldy ladies!
PD
PS "Lip Service returns Friday, April 20 on the BBC3."
Adolf Hitler's birthday? Only time will tell just how appropriate that unfortunate little coincidence proves to be. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact Hitler's deputy crash landed just south of Glasgow in 1941? (What a bizarre little tale that one was! Damn shady characters those ruddy Dukes of Hamilton if you ask me!)

I say, what a performance!!! Eat your heart out Obama! They should snap him up for series 3 of 'Lip Service' (if there is one)!!!
@Roz Turner
ReplyDeleteThe Snarkster? Being a relative newcomer, oo'er missus, to this site I'm not aware if this is a new term of endearment.
No matter, I luuuuuuurve it and will be using it often.
Yes, Ms. Murray did the lesbian thing with some crazy broad ex-wife on Ringer last evening. I was glued. She has been so in and out on this show. But it was quite a surprise to say the least.
ReplyDeleteI don't have BB3.
@Jas
ReplyDeleteLulz, I can't recall if I've nicked it off someone else to be honest. Such is the way of the internets! ;)
Oh, and I didn't mean to come across all newcomer hating - it just bothers me when people exhibit the all too typical kneejerk reaction to something they have no idea about; I wish more people (read: ALL THE PEOPLE) were aware of this awesome blog! If the original Anon had bothered to look into the site's prevailing style and tone, they might not have commented thusly.
My advice is to spend as much time reading the hilarity that is The Snarkster as you can - you won't regret it :)
okay so why can't i watch lip service on the fermoon site anymore and are there any other places to watch it since i don't get bbc??
ReplyDeleteAymen! To the return of Lip Service. Laura Frase meets The Clash at Demonhead indeed. That sort of f-ckery should not be allowed.
ReplyDeleteActually it does appear that Laura Fraser wasn't a part of the photoshoot (she and her family moved to new york prior to filming) amd they did just PS her head unto someone else's body.
