You guys! You guys, you guys, you guys. Wait. Stop. Make that, you gals! You gals, you gals, you gals! You know what’s making me super excited about this movie year? A shock of cascading red hair, a sure-tipped arrow and a badass display of self-bodice ripping. Yeah, I’m talking about the two minute and 30 second clip from “Brave” released this week. Pixar’s first film to feature a female lead isn’t in theaters until June 22. That’s four months away. But already the film looks to like it will add a rich, spunky, capable heroine to the cinematic pantheon. Also, who doesn’t love a good mooning gag? Now I love me some Pixar and, of course, I love the ladies, so this movie is aimed right at my bullseye, so to speak. Oh, and Scottish accents, I kind of can’t resist a Scottish accent. Happy weekend, all.
Oh my Gosh, I loooove Kelly MacDonald. Even though she was great in Gosford Park and her turn as Peter Pan in Finding Neverland should rightfully have won over all lesbians, it wasn't until she guested on Alias that I took serious notice and have since had to watch everything she's been in. So, yes, while I am looking forward to an animated ass-kicking lass, I'm especially looking forward to hearing Kelly MacDonald and her hot Scottish accent. ;)
ReplyDeleteWait, Dory wasn't the star of Finding Nemo? I'm very much looking forward to this new movie. Thanks for all you do, Ms. Snarker.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for this too!!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally looking forward to this film too -- Pixar is fabulous -- but the teasers/trailers do make it seem like yet another strong-because-she-wants-to-be-like-a-boy heroine. Where are all our strong-because-she's-a-girl heroines?
ReplyDeleteOk, so I haven't been this excited about a redhead since The Little Mermaid! I am STOKED!!! Can't wait to see this!
ReplyDeleteThis gave me goosebumps!
ReplyDeleteI love readheads :D
ReplyDeleteIf you love Strong female leads in animation you should check out the movies by Hayao Miyazaki. He's been animating kick-ass ladies who save themselves and the boys, since the early 80's.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid of being so excited for this movie! I hope there isn't any man (good or bad, goofy or fearless) to tame her. Usually that's what we get when we have a strong female character. There's always a man who will win her, be it through his failed masculinity or through his persistence, because women just can't escape heterosexuality!
ReplyDeleteI hope they make it different this time. I'd be very pleased to see a strong independent woman who is not sad or whose story is being told simply to show her journey to Hetero Land.
I would love some hints into lesbianity, but I think it's still very unlikely. Although, Shark Tale was made by Pixar and it had a very strong (male) gay friendly message. Sorry to those who prefer to believe it could be extended to lesbians, but 8 years later they still have no significant positive portrayal of lesbians. Only now they are making a movie with a female protagonist!
As we all know, supporting gay men is nowhere guarantee of supporting lesbians.
I hope they don't miss the opportunity. Otherwise it will be just one more of the now very common appropriations of lesbian identity in which they turn the tomboish girl who refuses to marry into just a straight girl who hasn't fell in love yet. It's a huge erasure of our very concrete existence and only sends the message that every lesbian just hasn't met the right guy yet. I'm done with this kind of thing in Hollywood.
So excited for Brave! Yeah, it's taken a crazy long time to have a female lead, but the work they've done has been uniformly good to excellent.
ReplyDeleteAnd if there's any Pixar connection to Shark Tale, it must be way behind the scenes. I think that was one of the Dreamworks attempts at competing with Pixar. Never saw it because I didn't appreciate the advertising that pushed big Hollywood names as voices over the quality of the story.
And yeah, Kelly McDonald is magical. Yum!
