My Weekend Crush

I’m not a huge fan of the color pink. It has always been too conventionally girlie for me, something I associate with ruffles and not the good potato chip kind. But Pink the singer, hell yeah. In fact, I remember distinctly when she first came on the scene 10 years ago with her short shock of hot pink hair and unquestionable sexy swagger. It was an immediate, undeniable, “Whoa.” She was a girl, but not girlie. She is just shy of full-on butch, but still plenty of tough. Fun, spunky, badass. I liked her a lot, right from the start.

Over the years she has kept giving us all more and more reasons to like her. Unafraid to speak her mind and unashamed of being strong, she packs her music with great melodies and greater messages. “Dear Mr. President” is one of the most searing indictments of the Bush era out there. Sure, we all wish she played for our team, but she has never been shy about supporting our team. An outspoken advocate for GLBT rights, she was recently received the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner with the Ally for Equality Award. All that and the gal can really sing. OK, fine – those abs don’t hurt either. Heck, thank to Pink, I even for a split second considered joining a convent on the off chance that she’d be there to, um, convert me. Happy weekend, all.

  1. So much agreeing on this it's not even funny. This is one amazing, amazing woman. I adore anyone who loves, so unabashedly, being exactly who they are and actively supports everyone else's right to do the same. LOVE HER.

  2. She is amazing. I do hope she can continue being such a thought provoking rebel with that touch of class. She is so in your face but still respectful in a way...like keeping the message more important then insulting someone.
although I did find the vegan message a little random in this video. Isn't it about people who are different...and oh by the way don't drink cow's milk

Awesome, thanx for posting this! There's much to love about Pink. Even how she took the name Pink. It has nothing to do with the "girl" association... she uses the name to remind us how we are all more alike than different, she named herself that because "we are all pink on the inside." Cool.

  5. Pink really does rock in so many ways. i don't think she gets as much credit as she deserves in mainstream media. How can anyone not respect her brave rebellious expression? The number of views and album sales hint at how great she is. i love Pink (i also like the colour pink and girlie ruffles lace and bows, but that's just me). Great video. Great choice for a weekend crush.

I'm mildly bothered by the need to emphasize that a "non-girlie girl" is something to be celebrated, but OK. There's nothing wrong with out-and-out femininity (and I say this as a lesbian).

Jimena, there is nothing wrong with out-and-out femininity. There is nothing wrong with masculinity in women, either, but we don't see that in the media, we don't see that from our families, and we don't even always see that from other queer women.

It is hard to be something other than feminine. It has to be harder for someone as much in the public eye as Pink is. That's why she's being celebrated here.

Pink has staying power and is definitely on an icon trajectory. Though she embraces her "underdog" outsider status, she's sooo right in all the right ways.

Yes!!! I was wondering if you were going to talk about her and her latest video, "Raise Your Glass." Like you, I've been a fan of hers since she first stepped onto the scene, and of course, her support of the LGBT community just made me like her even more (and helped when I was first coming out of the closet, too). This video, along with P!NK, is made of all kinds of awesome, and I'm so glad you chose to make her your weekend crush.

  19. yes, YES. I totally agree with your choice and your reasons. I almost feel bad that I only discovered her with her 3rd album and that only b/c I thought "if Linda Perry works with her, it can't be bad at all". Been a fan ever since :-)

Here's a link to the raise your glass video that works from France
