Vacation Vixen: Jodie Foster

I have a lot of complicated feelings about Jodie Foster. On the one hand, she is my first girl crush and my favorite brilliant, independent, uncompromising woman in Hollywood. On the other hand, she stands up for some real assholes like Mel Gibson and Roman Polanski. Well, I guess the one thing my brain can agree on is that she looks fucking hot (and gay) as hell in a tank top. OK, fine, it might be a muscle shirt instead – but it’s Tuesday and gets the benefit of the doubt. What can I say, when life gets confusing I hold on to the simple truths.

    My first true love....and what a great photo. Brains and beauty - there's no better combination.

  2. If I say that Jodie Foster's appeal has always eluded me, I lose my lesbian street cred, don't I?

    Yes, it is complicated and rarely do we have unadulterated pleasure. Jodie stands by Mel, who has to be one of the biggest assholes on the planet (presumably he's not such a jerk when he's A) not drunk and B) not sexually involved) and Roman, a great artist no doubt, but also without doubt a rapist. I guess Jodie gets points for loyalty. Somewhat less trying, but still conflicting: Mariska "I'm NOT gay" (sure, you're not) Hargitay and Angie "I luv, luv, luv the geighs, even as I support flat earth politics" Harmon. ARG! Why can't life ever be easy?

    Love her. I really don't see anything conflicting at all. Jodie stood by Mel by saying he's going through a dark time and she will help him though. That's a friend, a true friend. Even if you don't agree, and I don't, it's pretty admirable that she feels she can't leave him because he's starting to slip mentally. No matter what, if you ever called yourself a friend, how can you leave someone?

    With Roman, she never said anything for Roman and she did NOT sign that petition that went around. To me this is just an artist with an another artist. Someone that can separate the man and his work. And get to work on great material with Kate Winslet.

  9. @Anonymous: You just said what I wanted to say but failed to find the words for. Being there and supporting a friend in troubles don't necessarily mean that you agree with what they do. It just means that you're a loyal friend who will be there for them in good and bad times. :D

    The headlines about all of this suggest Jodie is defending these guys. I haven't heard her defend the behavior of either of them. For all we know she's read them the riot act (especially Mel).....in private. As another writer observed thankfully she didn't sign the Polanski petition. Although I bet she was asked to. None of us really know what Jodi Foster thinks but I suspect she's a person who believes in 1) privacy and 2) that people are complex.

    Although I confess, I wish Polanski had returned to serve his jail-time in the US. However, he seems to have served it more recently elsewhere. The Atlantic blog on this makes a respectable best case for Foster and Winslett NOT to create with Polanski--empathy.

    @Discernment

    Polanski was only held under house arrest in his Swiss chalet after his arrest for some weeks until the Swiss government decided not to extradite him back to the US so that he could actually serve his time. So no, he did NOT serve his time. And working with Gibson (who espouses a particularly medieval form of Catholicism that rejects Vatican II and cannot possibly be gay friendly and is known to spew sexist and racist hate speech. It's nice she doesn't abandon friends in trouble, but WHY befriend this angry hater in the first place?) Polanski implicitly condones their behavior.
