I’ve expressed my extreme, eternal love for all things “Wonderfalls” before here (and, yes, I still have the smooshed-face wax lion). I have the box set. I have the “I Surrender to Destiny” hoodie. And sometimes, when I’m feeling blue, I play the bouncy theme song and dream about inanimate objects talking to me.
Now, my conundrum is that I don’t really watch “Grey’s Anatomy” or any Shonda Rhimes productions, for that matter. I’m just not huge with the navel gazing (the lesbian couple gazing, however, is much appreciated). Also, another medical drama, Shonda? Are you going for a medical drama hat trick? This drama, called “Off the Map,” follows three American doctors who move to the jungles of South America to work at a free clinic.
Caroline will play Lily who, according to TV Guide, is a young doctor who heads to the jungle to escape tragedy. Awww, sad Jaye Tyler? Joining her will be Manny (played by “Without a Trace” alum Enrique Murciano), an “egotistical plastic surgeon,” and Meena (not cast yet), “an infectious disease specialist with a shadowy past.”
I can see the love triangle already. But maybe, just maybe, Shonda will remember the rabid devotion Calzona (and previously Callica) fans have lavished on Grey’s and make it an unexpected love triangle. Like, say, Lily lost her longtime college girlfriend in a tragic field hockey accident and then flees to South America where she is comforted by Meena. Meanwhile Meena, who has had a series of relationships with men that never felt quite right (or lasted very long), finds herself unexpectedly attracted to both Manny and Lily. Things get sweaty. Mosquito netting gets tangled. Lots of tank tops are worn. Boom – I’ve just written your first season for you, Shonda. You’re welcome.
Instead of sending them to the jungle, the show would be more interesting if they were at the science lab in Antarctica. The six months of night, the cold, the trapped indoors could lead to all kinds of hijinx, if not outright madness....especially once a parasitic, extremophilic bacteria is released from an ice core they are studying. The metaphorical structure of causation possibilities are endless! :)

This should be fun. : )
ReplyDeleteWonderfalls is one of the greatest shows ever. I forgot how freaking cute she is. Good, good news.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of excited. I never got into Wonderfalls, but I like the idea of a show set in South America. It could be so interesting. Although, more likely, it could be so, so wrong. I feel like Shonda's other shows have done a decent job of not playing to stereotypes, though, so maybe it'll be okay. And it'll have cute doctors.
ReplyDeleteI'm more than a little leery of anything created by Shonda Rimes, but I'll give it a shot for my beloved Caroline. I've never watched an episode of Gray's Anatomy or Private Practice due to their apparent emphasis on people desperately chasing partners they shouldn't rather than, y'know, medicine. Hopefully this new show will be more procedural and less "drama". Maybe she can recruit some of the writers from ER?
ReplyDeleteWonderfalls was/is still one of my favorite shows. Caroline Dhavernas is adorable & brilliant & defo helped fuel my love for Canada/Canadians. But I gave up on Grey's Anatomy in season 3 and I've never seen more than 5 minutes of Private Practice, so I don't know if I can bring myself to turn on this new one. I'll have to rely on you for the highlights.
ReplyDeletemaybe it better this way - it could become so weird -
ReplyDeletefrom tv.com trivia for episode - "Safety Canary" : "This episode set up a storyline in season 2. Thomas and Beth had sex and just a few minutes later, Sharon and Beth had sex, Sharon would get impregnated from his semen, causing a mircle birth storyline. The orignal script called for animated sperm swimming across the screen when Thomas and Beth were having sex, and then the sperm swam the opposite way when Beth and Sharon had sex to show this happening."
If you cast Felecia Day as Meena, you won't need a triangle.
ReplyDeleteDangit. I am also a Wonderfalls devotee who shuns the Grey's and Private Practice.
ReplyDeleteWhat to do, what to do.
It was a very very small part, but she was also in Lost and Delirious. I liked her in that she seemed very mature @ such a young age. =]
ReplyDeleteomg, that was hilarious. :)
