Filled with...

I cannot think of a more appropriately-named show on TV right now than “Glee.” To say it filled me with the aforementioned would be an understatement. It made me want to clap my hands and jump up and down and sing out loud to Journey in a crowded room. Funny, mean, touching, fabulous. Come on, it has show tunes AND Jane Lynch. If that’s not super gay (in the very, very good way) then I don’t know what is.

Now, I wasn’t in show choir in high school. I lacked both the ability to sing and move my hands in unison. But lots of my friends were in the club and I distinctly remember the shiny costumes and the enthusiastic performances. But the great thing about “Glee” is that it isn’t really a shiny, sequined high school musical wannabe. It’s about embracing the cheesiness and acknowledging the cruelty. High school is mean, it always has been. But it can also be filled with inexplicable joy. Kind of like “Glee.”

Roll your eyes all you want, hipsters, but there is an energy, eagerness and earnestness to those jazz hands that is impossible to resist. At its heart, it’s about the oddballs, the misfits, the dreamers. Gay kid? Yep, he’s there. Beyonce wannabe? Yep, she’s there. Stuttering Asian punk? Yep. Wheelchair-bound guitarist? Yep. Quarterback who wants to sing? Yep. Myspace superstar in her own mind with two dads? Oh, girl, she is so there. All that and an upcoming cameo by Kristin Chenoweth and I feel like doing that jumping up and down, clapping and signing Journey thing again. Still not convinced? Well, let Jane explain it to you. I mean, who can say no to Jane?

My only real disappointment is that I have to wait all damn summer to see any new episodes. It won’t return until the fall. Now that, that’s cruel. That’s even more cruel than high school.

p.s. If you missed it, the episode will stream all summer at fox.com.

  1. I missed it last night (busy with the 'NCIS' and 'The Mentalist' finales), but uber-excited to hear that I can catch it on Fox's website.

  2. So glad to hear I'm not the only one! I'm dating myself here, but I haven't been this excited since 'Fame!'

    Jane Lynch. Seriously.

  3. Ah Fox you giveth and you taketh away. Seriously though Glee was great, just still sad about TSCC. Maybe Summer could be a dance teacher?

  6. I was so pleasantly surprised by this show. I was just gonna kill time b/w Idol and Mariska, but then, I laughed a lot in the first ten minutes. It was sweet, touching, and as Dorothy said, mean...it was basically just awesome! Waiting will suck, but something to look forward to. That and Kristen Chenowith...can we make her permanent on this show?

  7. I really enjoyed it, especially Jane Lynch. I have to say though, the girl with the two dads kind of annoyed me. I want more of the Asian punk!

  8. More Jane Lynch I think. Her absence in Party Down last week was horrible, and she wasn't even in this as much.

  9. It is simply wonderful and awesome and I cannot wait to watch every single week.
And Jane Lynch and the hepatitis line - instant classic.

I will now go to the bathroom and sing a bit, unfortunately I do not have any talent at all.

  10. OMG I am not alone! I watched it twice lastnight and sang along to Journey both times. What is not to love? Singing, gays, Jane Lynch, oh my!
Although I seriously thought it was going to be a summer series. Then they tell me after I get hooked that I have to wait til fall, but "I can watch it on fox.com alllllll summer". Such a tease fox, such a tease.

  12. I thought it was EXCELLENT! I was involved in theatre in high school. As in I was a tech. I could kinda act and kinda sing, but not well enough to get anything big. But heck, as a card carrying lesbian...er thespian...I was good with a hammer! I ran lights and sound too...just sayin'

  13. Just finished watching it. It's at least 5,498 times better than I thought it was going to be. The only bad part is that I have to wait until the fall for more. That makes me a sad panda.

  14. Ooh, thanks for the Jane Lynch clip. I was just wondering today if the show might find a way for her to sing as Sue Sylvester. She has a lot of new fans from THE L WORD who might not know that she has a phenomenal voice.

I loved the show and was pleased to see something so sweet and fun and positive being given the big network push.

  15. Glee was awesome for many reasons, Jane Lynch a big one. But mostly I loved it be because it felt like the movie Election. I'm too lazy to check, but same writer perhaps?
