Uh huh unicorns

I first fell in love with Leisha Hailey as a singer. The Murmurs, I miss them still. Heck, I practically wore my CDs down to a nub from repeated play. Then I caught her in “All Over Me” and my lifelong devotion was cemented. The pink hair, heavens, the pink hair. Now thanks to “The L Word” we all know that Leisha is that most rare mix of hilarious, adorable and hot. But, as a result, I kind of forgot about the singing thing. I mean, I knew she started a new band and I knew they had released an EP and I knew they were touring and I knew they were working on a full-length album. But, I don't know, be it nostalgia or general fear of shifting inertia or plain-old laziness, I hadn't really checked out Uh Huh Her that much. But, then I saw Leisha and bandmate Camila Grey had released their first video, “Not a Love Song.” So I clicked play.

Hello, lesbian unicorns. Seriously, they could be the new manatee. I don't know what all the lightening bolts and 80s graph paper backgrounds were all about, but you can't deny the awesome that is two hot rock stars being hot rock stars together. Consider me sold. UHH's album, “Common Reaction,” drops (yes, I went there because I'm down like that...word) Tuesday. Hear the whole thing here now. Dream of lesbian unicorns everywhere later.

p.s. My apologies, my international friends, for the viewing issues. Check it out here instead, with thanks to The Gentleman.

  2. I thought the EP was really nice, and not just because of Leisha.
She absolutely steals the camera during the entire video, but Camilla is obvisously very "talented" too...

I'm guessing the album will not be distributed in Europe...will it?

"But, as a result, I kind of forgot about the *sining* thing"

Finding spelling errors is one of my pasttimes.

    Go Leisha!

I agree with the other person who said that Leisha is pretty much the only thing you notice in the video. Well, Leisha and that tiny unicorn.

I've been listening to their album for almost two months now, and as much as I would love to say that it is great, it actually isn't. Not a love song is perfect as a single, and there is another bunch of solid songs (Explode, Say so, the title track), but it's kind of it. To me, obviously. The main problem of the album is its production: either under-produced or wrongly produced, most songs sound the same and it never really develops. It starts very well with Not a love song and then proceeds going down from there . Maybe my expectations were too high, I don't know; but I feel like Common reaction should have been an Ep with maximum 5 songs, instead of being a LP with 10.

that's my point of view, anyway. maybe you'll enjoy it way more!

I was actually an extra for this video shoot. I'm 5'2" and in a crowd BEHIND UHH. Obvs, you can't see me, but Ms. Hailey and Ms. Grey were great. The shoot was relatively short. It was hotter than balls and there was a smoke machine pumping what resembled lawn mower exhaust into the tiny space we were all crammed into, but having the two of them compliment my jacket totally made it worth it. The video looks great.

  10. apparently it will be released in Europe a tad bit later in 2009.

I have had the album for quite a while now and since I loved the Murmurs (and Gush for that matter) and adore Leisha I really wanted to like the record. There are a few good songs, but somehow they pretty much sound the same. when you listen to the CD and don't pay too much attention then you might think it is one big song. IMO it is a great background music and it does not distract you much (perfect for writing papers and stuff) but if you liked the Murmurs UHH might not be your cup of tea. it is quite different.
The best thing about it is that now I can watch Leisha in something new without watching TLW ;)

  12. I saw them a few months a go in San Diego, and I REALLY REALLY wanted to dig their sound. But I couldn't. The melodies for many songs are so similar and, as a result, I quickly grew bored. Individually many of their songs are good (Explode) but as a whole the album does not feel well rounded. However, I promise to love and support them and to tell all of my friends to try them on for size. PS, Camilla is f'ing HOT. No offense, Leisha ; )

  13. Thank you DS. Well put as always. Love the video, who doesn't want to pet a unicorn?
To those crits of the music; their sound is uniquely right on. They successfully cross between vocal and electronica, for a perfect blend. Harmonies are singular and inviting. Cheers to the drum work, elec. steady and yet creative (a rare thing). These are songs that envelop you, like somebody to want to be with all night and morning.

I haven't been able to stop listening to UHH's album since I managed to get my hands on a leaked copy a couple of months ago. It's seriously almost all I listen to - and the "I See Red" EP was all I could listen to for months, until I managed to get my hands on the leaked full-length album.

Leisha did look very good in the video - she sure does glam up nice! - but I've got major girlporn feelings for Cam, man. So, no, Leisha's not the only thing I noticed ;p

For me, there are only a couple of tracks that don't really work - "Dance With Me" and "So Long" - but apart from that, I'm absolutely crazy about UHH's sound. I have to say, though, that you should try to get your hands on the Say So EP just for that version of "Explode" - it's a lot sexier than the full-length album version.

It helps a great deal if you're into electronica and retro-80s style music to start with. If you go into it expecting Gush or the Murmurs, then of course you're going to be disappointed - but if you take it as a completely separate, stand-alone project, it stands on its own two feet very well. Cam's voice is heavenly and rich and Leisha's is sweet like spun sugar and they compliment each other very nicely.

  16. I saw them a couple of months ago at a tiny bar in Lawrence, Kansas, and they were tremendous. Part of it could have been the fact that it was a thousand degrees in there and it was a big ol' lesbian sardine tin. Leisha's family was there, too, so that was cute. I don't really disagree with the fact that their sound is a bit repetitive, but that show was a ton of fun.

I was just reading AfterEllen and saw your "I hereby declare baby unicorns the new lesbian manatee." That's it: best line of the year. Too funny.
