Someone please check the skies. Are pigs flying? Jodie Foster is striding ever further out of the closet. And by ever further, I mean getting thisclose to kicking to damn door off its hinges. On Tuesday, Jodie received the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at the 16th annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast. During her emotional acceptance speech she thanked “my beautiful Cydney who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss.”OK, I’m to give you a minute to let that information sink in. Because, yes, you read that right. One of the most private stars in Hollywood just publicly thanked her longtime partner Cydney Bernard in front of a room full of industry heavyweights and assembled media. That, my friends, is MAJOR.It has been a year of quiet and not-so-quiet revelations for Jodie. In March her whole family -- Cydney and their sons Charles and Kit -- attended the “Meet the Robinsons” premiere, though they did not pose together. In April, “Out” magazine put models wearing Jodie and Anderson Cooper masks on its controversial “Glass Closet” cover. In June, she made an undisclosed, but “extraordinarily generous” donation to The Trevor Project, the nation’s only 24-hour suicide prevention hotline for gay and questioning youth. In July, at the opening of the new Saban Center for Health and Wellness, she unveiled a plaque with her son’s hand prints which read “Kit Bernard Foster and Charles Bernard Foster.” Then in August, she discussed the eternity ring she wears on her ring finger and told “More” magazine that “My life is my life. I’m not going to change my life for anybody. I don’t have any problems with it…I don’t have any problems with anybody reporting on my life. It’s just that I’m not going to bring my family into that.” And in September, she used the term “partner” for the first time in an interview when talking to the Denver Post about acting: “I need to have something that doesn't belong to my mom, doesn’t belong to my kids, doesn’t belong to my partner.”And now, this. Wow. I am stunned and ecstatic and stunned some more. I’m not sure if you could tell (since I never post about her or anything), but Jodie Foster is one of my favorite -- if not my very favorite -- stars. The reasons are endless, but most of all I admire her for being such a smart, strong and sophisticated woman. And while I wish she had been out all along, I give her credit for doing it on her own terms. While at times I wasn’t sure it would ever happen, I think it’s safe to say there’s no stopping the forward progress now. Consider those hinges blown. The woman is coming out. Does anyone else feel like having champagne?p.s. Here is Jodie with her mom Evelyn at the Women in Entertainment fete. I see where she got her beautiful blue eyes.p.p.s Jodie also apparently referred to herself as a “professional” and a “gentleman” in her speech. Come on, can we officially call Jodie out now and then call it a day? Bring on the bubbly!
[Enormous, demonstrative and heartfelt hat tip to cappuccino girl, you rock lady!]
UPDATE: Oh, and here is the video. Yes, video.
Champagne It Is Then!!! Alright!!! So now that's done, who's next...lol. Just when you thought you couldn't admire her more.....
ReplyDeleteWon't even try to go on for words fail me now.
LOVE that woman! *raises glass... here's to Jodie*
Jodie should be the model for young women, regardless of orientation, rather than the current crop of clueless celebutants. She's always shown class, intelligence, and a level of respect for herself and others.
ReplyDeleteYou go Jodie!
Jodie makes it completely effortless to love and admire her.
ReplyDeleteGet the champagne poppin': Whoop-ti-ay!
ReplyDeleteshe doesn't need to say "I'M GAY" or bi or wharever, isn't that great?
ReplyDelete"she doesn't need to say "I'M GAY" or bi or wharever, isn't that great?"
ReplyDeleteThat is great. Shouting "I'm gay" seems very un-Foster-like, so this is a sweet way of doing it. But c'mon, she was receiving an award, personally, I would've lost respect for her if she didn't thank Cydney. Hmmm...I think I'll go light a candle to jebus to ask for more Jodie award nominations...
Wow!!! only three weeks ago when anne will (the german jodie foster pendant in terms of privacy and everything else) came out I said "how long will it be until jodie foster will do the same?
ReplyDeletenow here it is.. sort of.. yayy!
Can we declare it Int'l Jodie Foster Love Day too and proceed to get really drunk and then repeat it every year on Dec 5? We do need more lesbian-ish reasons to get drunk, yeah?
ReplyDelete"Can we declare it Int'l Jodie Foster Love Day"
ReplyDeleteYES! From hereon, December 5th shall be forever known as International Jodie Foster Love Day!
When do we all get to congratulate her in person?
ReplyDeleteAnd I say YAY to JFL Day. On this special day we shall all meet here and offer up adoration to JF - champagne and all. And heck yes, I'm all for congratulating her in person. It will be her pleasure...lol
ReplyDeleteMaybe she doesn't feel obligated to "come out." She is out. Fine with me if she doesn't want to talk about her sex life. I equally don't want to hear straights talking about precisely how hetero they are either. This whole silence about her sex life seems a wonderful mature statement that gay is okay, and not even worthy of discussion anymore. What's the big deal?
ReplyDeletejodie is, to me, one of the maybe three or four not-horrible american celebrities.
ReplyDeleteever.
i'm just picky that way.
don't do the alcohol but i'll settle for a large pellegrino. crack! fizz! salute!
GAY OR STRAIGHT JODIE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE MY FAVORITES.I JUST HOPE EVERYONE RESPECTS HER PRIVACY AND DOESN'T PRESS HER TO FULLY COME OUT UNTIL SHE'S READY-- IF SHE'S EVERY READY.
ReplyDeleteAlways been a favorite of mine too. Congrats to Jodie!
ReplyDeleteDr Starling move over - I found Jodie Foster's next movie Oscar-winning role! Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor who wrote ""My Stroke of Insight"" and delivered a talk about it on TED.com that will knock your socks off! The video's been seen 5 million times and I understand why.
ReplyDeleteTaylor was a Harvard trained brain scientist who suffered a massive stroke. I don't think we'll ever hear a story like this - Taylor understands how the brain functions and she was able to observe her mind deteriorating. She writes about the euphoric nirvana and a sense of complete peace and well-being she discovered in her stroke! She talks about this in her incredible (don't miss it) talk on TED.com. The book is great too - highly recommended. You'll learn how to 'step to the right of their left brain' to uncover a deep internal peace. Sign me up!
