You May Now Hug the Bride

So I find myself in the strange position of not being all that excited about a lesbian film. Not that there appears to be anything on its surface terribly wrong with “Jenny’s Wedding.” Just that it looks a little dour. But, again, maybe that’s just me. Maybe the recent jubilation about marriage equality has me not feeling like returning to a state of closeted disapproval. Like calling your girlfriend your “roommate” in 2015 feels so…quaint.

Plus, man, there are an awful lot of hugs between Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel in the trailer. Hot, passionate, about-to-vow-their-undying-love…hugs. Yeah. But, who am I kidding, I’ll see this eventually because I see basically all lesbian movies eventually. And I will say I am happy to see that Izzie Stevens and Rory Gilmore end up getting hitched.

Seriously, they should have at least made it a period piece. It's such a drag to be back in that mentality.

Still a reality for plenty for folks.

New lesbian film? Yay!

Heigl? Sigh...

Since this movie is obviously out of some man's fantasy, they should at least kiss. I'm going to smack myself if I even think of going to see this. While it's nice to see Alexis in a movie, KH is quite possibly the world's worst actress.

This film was made several years ago. I remember a tweet/post about a kickstarter type thing to get it finished so that's why it's so dated. Fingers crossed that Heigl and Beldel get to kiss at the wedding at least.

Agreed to all of the above.

Has anyone read: Autostraddle's thoughts? Hilarious.

But at the beach today, staring at the clouds, I had a thought— Has there been a lesbian film where the central character has been closeted for ages? Usually, we see the coming out story as a synchronous blossom of first love, a bloom of truth, parents, friends, orgasms, all at once.

Now, the movie doesn't appear to have any of the ambition to tell the story of self-loathing and layered of veiled secrets that must be at the core of the premise, but I am still holding out some hope. Maybe in the full-length film, there might be some more truthful exploration of the characters portrayed. Maybe the reason Jenny is getting married in the first place is to try and add some va-voom to the relations with Kitty that has so clearly lost chemistry in the scenes we're seeing now.

Probably not, but a girl can dream.

I feel like you have put into words what I couldn't quite figure out. It's a "meh" film...not much to get hyped about.
